With the increase in the expectancy of the life span of humans, neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) have imposed a considerable burden on the family, society, and nation. In defiance of the breakthroughs in the knowledge of the pathogenesis and underlying mechanisms of various NDs, very little success has been achieved in developing effective therapies. This review draws a bead on the availability of the nutraceuticals to date for various NDs (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, vascular cognitive impairment, Prion disease, Spinocerebellar ataxia, Spinal muscular atrophy, Frontotemporal dementia, and Pick's disease) focusing on their various mechanisms of action in various in vivo and in vitro models of NDs. This review is distinctive in its compilation to critically review preclinical and clinical studies of the maximum phytochemicals in amelioration and prevention of almost all kinds of neurodegenerative diseases and address their possible mechanism of action. Amredobresib purchase PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library searches were used for preclinical studies, while ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed were searched for clinical updates. The results from preclinical studies demonstrate the efficacious effects of the phytochemicals in various NDs while clinical reports showing mixed results with promise for phytochemical use as an adjunct to the conventional treatment in various NDs. These studies together suggest that phytochemicals can significantly act upon different mechanisms of disease such as oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptotic pathways, and gene regulation. However, further clinical studies are needed that should include the appropriate biomarkers of NDs and the effect of phytochemicals on them as well as targeting the appropriate population.Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), as an innovative technology, can perform water temperature measurements both in horizontal and vertical slices. Investigations on vertical slice observations are significantly fewer in number than horizontal observations due to difficulties in multi-path arrival peak identification. In this study, a two-station sound transmission experiment is carried out in Thousand-Island Lake, Hangzhou, China, to acquire acoustic data for water temperature profiling. Time windows, determined by range-independent ray simulation, are used to identify multi-path arrival peaks and obtain corresponding sound wave travel times. Special attention is paid to travel time correction, whose errors are caused by position drifting by more than 2 m of moored stations. The sound speed and temperature profiling are divided into four layers and are calculated by regularized inversion. Results show a good consistency with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) measurements. The root mean square error (RMSE) of water temperature is 0.3494, 0.6838, 1.0236 and 1.0985 °C for layer 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The fluctuations of measurement are further smoothed by the moving average, which decreases the RMSE of water temperature to 0.2858, 0.4742, 0.7719 and 0.9945 °C, respectively. This study illustrates the feasibility and high accuracy of the coastal acoustic tomography method in short-range water temperature measurement. Furthermore, 3D water temperature field profiling can be performed with combined analyzing in horizontal and vertical slices.Current practices employed by most wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are unable to completely remove endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) from reclaimed waters, and consistently discharge these substances to receiving systems. Effluent-dominated and dependent surface waters, especially during low instream flows, can increase exposure and risks to aquatic organisms due to adverse biological effects associated with EDCs. Given the ecological implications that may arise from exposure to such compounds, the present a multi-approach study examined spatio-temporal estrogenic potential of wastewater effluent to fish in East Canyon Creek (ECC), Utah, USA, a unique urban river with instream flows seasonally influenced by snowmelt. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were caged at different upstream and downstream sites from an effluent discharge during the summer and fall seasons. In the summer, where approximately 50% of the streamflow was dominated by effluent, fish from the upstream and a downstream sited analytically-based assessments may or may not support the identification of causative contaminants for adverse biological effects.Sulfate (SO42-) contamination in groundwater and surface water is an environmental problem of widespread concern. In this study, we combined stable isotope analyses of SO42- (δ34S and δ18O) and water (δ2H and δ18O) with a Bayesian mixing model (SIAR), for the first time, to identify sources and transformation of SO42- in an area of northern China with multiple potential sources of pollution. The overall values of δ34S and δ18O-SO42- ranged from 1.3‰ to 16.3‰ and -3.8‰-8.8‰ in groundwater, and from -1.1‰ to 9.3‰ and 2.7‰-9.2‰ in surface waters, respectively. Analyses of SO42- isotopes and water chemistry indicated that SO42- in groundwater and surface water mainly originated from mixing of oxidation of sulfate, sewage, chemical fertilizers, dissolution of evaporite and precipitation. There was no significant correlation between δ34S and δ18O and SO42- concentration in groundwater, indicating that bacterial sulfate reduction did not affect the SO42- isotopic composition. SIAR model showed the main sources of SO42- in groundwater and surface water comprised oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage. In groundwater, oxidation of sulfide minerals and sewage accounted for 37.5-44.5% and 35.5-42.7% of SO42-, respectively. In regard to surface waters, the contribution of oxidation of sulfide minerals to SO42- was higher in the wet season (31.8 ± 9.9%) than in the intermediate (22.4 ± 7.8%) and dry (20.9 ± 8.2%) seasons, but the contribution proportion of sewage was slightly lower in the wet season (19.9 ± 8.5%) than in the intermediate (23.8 ± 8.7%) and dry (24.2 ± 8.5%) seasons. This study indicates that it is necessary for local government to improve the treatment infrastructure for domestic sewage and optimize methods of agricultural fertilization and irrigation to prevent SO42- contamination of groundwater and surface water.
