Omissions in nursing care can compromise patient safety. To date, this phenomenon has been investigated almost exclusively via nurse surveys. find more However, such surveys restrict the range of activities which can be assessed for omissions, and patient level analysis. As an alternative, retrospective chart review methodology has been used successfully in other research fields, but not yet for omitted nursing care.
To describe characteristics and frequency of omitted nursing care using a retrospective chart review methodology.
Observational single center study in two German neurological inpatient units. A random sample of 100 patient admissions was used.
A structured chart review protocol to detect nursing omissions was developed and applied. The full range of expected nursing care activities were assessed regarding the importance of documenting them and whether they had been fully or partially omitted. Vital sign measurements were assessed regarding both the measurement target number and the number of measurng a retrospective chart review protocol to identify omissions in nursing care allows the assessment of a broad range of nursing activities. Additionally, this is the first-time patient-level data on a broad range of activities have been analyzed. The newly developed chart review methodology can complement established survey methods and provide a new perspective on the phenomenon of omitted nursing care.
Mild cognitive impairment is an age-related cognitive disorder which is associated with frequent memory lapses, impaired judgement, and progressive functional decline. If untreated early, 39.2% of people with mild cognitive impairment could progress to develop dementia. However, there are currently no approved pharmacological interventions to treat the condition, which lead researchers to explore non-pharmacological options, such as dance therapy.
This systematic review aimed to examine the effectiveness of dance interventions on cognition, neuroplasticity, physical function, depression, and quality of life in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
Seven databases were systematically searched from their respective inception dates to 31 March 2020. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were screened and assessed for risk of bias. Eight RCTs evaluating dance interventions were included.
Results showed that dance interventions had a significant moderate effect on global cognition (SMD=0.54, 173659).
Dance is a non-pharmacological and inexpensive intervention that can be implemented for older adults on a large scale. It can slow down the cognitive deterioration of older adults with mild cognitive impairment. However, the findings should be interpreted with caution due to the heterogeneity in intervention designs. Rigorous design studies with long-term follow-ups, neuroimaging, biological markers, and comprehensive neuropsychological assessment are required to understand the mechanism of dance interventions and demonstrate its efficacy for older adults with mild cognitive impairment. The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42020173659).
Safe and high-quality end of life care is not always achieved in acute care hospitals. Nurses represent a key source of information about current practice, and active participants in interventions to improve end of life care in these settings. Examining the volume, type and quality of publications in this field can help to determine whether research is following a natural scientific progression to inform best-practice end of life care.
To systematically review (i) whether the volume and type of publications (i.e. measurement, descriptive or interventions studies) examining nurses' perceptions of, and involvement in, end-of-life care delivered in acute hospitals changed over time (i.e. since 2000); (ii) the proportion of intervention studies involving nurses that meet Risk of Bias research design criteria; and (iii) the effectiveness of intervention studies that met minimum Risk of Bias criteria.

We examined if education contributes to brain resistance by studying its influence on the association between vascular risk factors and brain pathology. In 4111 stroke-free and dementia-free community-dwelling participants (62.9 ± 10.7 years), we explored the association between vascular risk factors (hypertension and the Framingham Stroke Risk Profile [FRSP]) and imaging markers of brain pathology (markers of cerebral small vessel disease and brain volumetry), stratified by educational attainment level. Associations of hypertension and FSRP with markers of brain pathology were not significantly different between levels of educational attainment. Certain associations appeared weaker in those with higher compared to lower educational attainment, particularly for white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Supplementary residual analyses showed significant associations between higher educational attainment and stronger resistance to WMH among others. Our results suggest a role for educational attainment in resistance to vascular brain pathology. Yet, further research is needed to better characterize determinants of brain resistance.
