Changes in forefoot bending stiffness have been shown to affect metatarsophalangeal peak bending angles as well as athletic performance. Increasing bending stiffness tends to reduce peak bending angles, which could potentially reduce hyperextension injuries such as turf toe. Limited information is available, however, on the efficacy of increasing forefoot bending stiffness on large-sized athletes such as those that participate in American Football, with prior studies being conducted on smaller athlete populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the influence of increased forefoot bending stiffness on metatarsophalangeal joint extension and athletic performance of grid-iron football players. Ten varsity grid-iron football players performed four National Football League combine movements in a motion capture laboratory in three footwear conditions of varying bending stiffness Soft (12.7 N/mm), Control (23.8 N/mm), Stiff (42.2 N/mm). None of the footwear conditions significantly altered the maximum metatarsophalangeal bending. Therefore, to reduce metatarsophalangeal hyperextension injuries in American football players a greater amount of forefoot bending stiffness may be required. Performance differences were present only during the five-metre sprint acceleration, with athletes having an improved performance in the Control and Stiff conditions. This improved performance was due to an increased horizontal impulse and improvements in power generation at the ankle joint.Objective To analyze the available literature on papilledema in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), report the first detailed pediatric case, and explore the underlying pathophysiology. Methods First, we conducted a comprehensive literature review of all cases of papilledema in CIDP. Next, we reviewed each case, incorporating only those including cerebrospinal fluid analysis into the results. Finally, we present our pediatric patient. Results Our literature review yielded a total of 9 adult and no pediatric cases. Cerebrospinal fluid protein and opening pressures were elevated in all cases. They were also elevated in our pediatric case. Conclusion Prolonged periods of active immune-mediated inflammation is likely a cause of papilledema in adult CIDP, and possibly also in our pediatric case.How do income and income inequality combine to influence subjective well-being? We examined the relation between income and life satisfaction in different societies, and found large effects of income inequality within a society on the relationship between individuals' incomes and their life satisfaction. The income-satisfaction gradient is steeper in countries with more equal income distributions, such that the positive effect of a 10% increase in income on life satisfaction is more than twice as large in a country with low income inequality as it is in a country with high income inequality. These findings are predicted by an income rank hypothesis according to which life satisfaction is derived from social rank. T-DXd cost A fixed increment in income confers a greater increment in social position in a more equal society. Income inequality may influence people's preferences, such that in unequal countries people's life satisfaction is determined more strongly by their income.Introduction To date, no study has explored associations between objective stress-related biomarkers (i.e., inflammatory markers, diurnal rhythm of cortisol) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Latina breast cancer survivors and their informal caregivers (i.e., family, friends). Method This cross-sectional feasibility study assessed saliva C-reactive protein, saliva diurnal cortisol rhythm (cortisol slope), and self-reported HRQOL (psychological, physical, and social domains) in 22 Latina survivor-caregiver dyads. Feasibility was defined as ≥85% samples collected over 2 days (on waking, in afternoon, and in evening). Associations between biomarkers and HRQOL were examined with correlational analyses. Results Collection of saliva was feasible. Strongest associations were observed between survivor evening cortisol (as well as cortisol slope) and fatigue, a component of physical HRQOL. Discussion Associations presented may help promote investigations of mechanisms linking stress-related biomarkers and HRQOL in Latina breast cancer survivor-caregiver dyads, which will facilitate development of culturally congruent interventions for this underserved group.This qualitative study explores the experiences of men who self-report victimization from a female intimate partner in four English-speaking countries. Forty-one men who reported any type of intimate partner abuse (IPA) from a female partner were recruited via targeted advertising in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Twelve online focus groups were conducted across countries using a phenomenologically informed design. Thematic analysis was carried out from an inductive and realist epistemological position and themes identified at a semantic level. This approach was taken to directly reflect the men's experiences and perspectives, ensuring the voices of this hard-to-reach and overlooked population were heard. Three themes were identified across the countries an imbalanced experience of harm; living with sustained abuse; and knowledge is power for men experiencing IPA. It was found that most participants underwent physical harm in the context of coercive control and experienced abuse over long periods of time. They were slow to recognize the magnitude of their partners' behavior and act upon it for a range of reasons that are described in detail. In addition, promoting knowledge about the victimization of men by women, using appropriate language and active learning, was found to be important in helping the men gain autonomy and agency to break the pattern of abuse and aid their recovery. The implications of the findings for developing male-friendly IPA policy, practice, and services are discussed, in addition to the need for innovative research methodology to access hard-to-reach populations.
