We propose transfer of the paramagnetic impurity (PI) polarization to nuclei in bulk, outside the diffusion barrier, by using dipolar system of the nuclear spins. The transfer can overcome influence of the diffusion barrier and is proposed to be implemented in four stages. At the first stage, transition of the Zeeman PI order to the Zeeman order of nuclear spins inside the spin-diffusion barrier is occurred. During the second stage the Zeeman order of both the nuclear spins inside the barrier and the nuclear spins in bulk is transferred into the nuclear dipolar spin order. As a result, the nuclear dipolar spin reservoir inside the barrier acquires a lower spin temperature, and thus a gradient of the spin temperature of the nuclear dipolar spin system is created. Since the external magnetic field and the magnetic field created by PIs do not effect on the dipole-dipole interaction between the nuclear spins, the dipolar reservoir is common for all nuclear spins, both inside and outside the diffusion barrier. Restriction of the diffusion barrier is removed and the spin diffusion of the dipole energy and transfer of the spin dipolar order to bulk spins occurs without obstacles (the third stage). At the last stage, to register an NMR signal, the dipolar order of the bulk spins is transferred into the Zeeman order of these spins. But why might this be the case? Are children's gradually improving talker recognition abilities driven primarily by general maturational factors in the cognitive or perceptual domain (general maturation hypothesis), or are these improvements primarily linked to children's increasingly sophisticated linguistic knowledge (language attunement hypothesis)? In the current study, we addressed this question by testing monolingual English-speaking 5- and 6-year-olds (N = 80) on their ability to recognize talkers in a familiar language (i.e., English) and in an unfamiliar language (i.e., Spanish) using a "voice lineup" talker recognition task. We predicted two alternative outcomes. According to the general maturation hypothesis, we should see improvements in talker recognition for both the familiar and unfamiliar languages as children grow older. According to the language attunement hypothesis, however, we should see developmental improvements in talker recognition for the familiar language only. Our findings suggest that early developmental improvements in talker recognition are limited to familiar languages, highlighting the potential central role of language-specific knowledge in talker recognition.Does number-word structure have a long-lasting impact on transcoding? Contrary to English, German number words comprise decade-unit inversion (e.g., vierundzwanzig is literally translated as four-and-twenty). To investigate the mental representation of numbers, we tested the effect of visual and linguistic-morphological characteristics on the development of verbal-visual transcoding. In a longitudinal cross-linguistic design, response times (RTs) in a number-matching experiment were analyzed in Grade 2 (119 German-speaking and 179 English-speaking children) and in Grade 3 (131 German-speaking and 160 English-speaking children). To test for long-term effects, the same experiment was given to 38 German-speaking and 42 English-speaking adults. Participants needed to decide whether a spoken number matched a subsequent visual Arabic number. Systematic variation of digits in the nonmatching distractors allowed comparison of three different transcoding accounts (lexicalization, visual, and linguistic-morphological). German speakers were generally slower in rejecting inverted number distractors than English speakers. Across age groups, German speakers were more distracted by Arabic numbers that included the correct unit digit, whereas English speakers showed stronger distraction when the correct decade digit was included. These RT patterns reflect differences in number-word morphology. The individual cost of rejecting an inverted distractor (inversion effect) predicted arithmetic skills in German-speaking second-graders only. The moderate relationship between the efficiency to identify a matching number and arithmetic performance could be observed cross-linguistically in all age groups but was not significant in German-speaking adults. Thus, findings provide consistent evidence of a persistent impact of number-word structure on number processing, whereas the relationship with arithmetic performance was particularly pronounced in young children.
