This study investigated the effect of the group-based Otago exercise program (OEP) on frailty and physical function in older adults with cognitive impairment. We recruited eighteen older adults with cognitive impairment from a nursing-home to perform the OEP three times a week, for a period of three months in a nursing home. The intervention was feasible with attending an average of 21 out of 36 sessions. The frailty score decreased significantly (p less then 0.05). Physical function including Time Up and Go test (TUG), 30 seconds Sit-To-Stand Test (30 s-SST) and Four-Stage Balance Test was significantly positive after intervention (all p less then 0.001). The group-based OEP is a potentially effective strategy for reversing frailty and improving physical function among older adults with cognitive impairment.The purpose of this study was to test usability of a tablet-based cognitive behavioral intervention ("Tab-CBI") application. Tab-CBI was designed to improve a simple walking activity for older adults with arthritis fatigue. Two phases of usability evaluation were conducted phase I with 5 older adults to identify any initial design issues and phase II with 10 older adults to examine if Tab-CBI was seamlessly integrated into their daily living. Participants perceived that Tab-CBI was easy, light, and intuitive to use and helped them walking. They reported two key benefit as a motivator to make more active in walking and improved confidence of self-management of fatigue. They referred video recordings and videoconferencing communications as two preferable features. There were also comments for improvement, for example, a challenge for holding a tablet when videoconferencing communications. Participants comments were incorporated into a final version of Tab-CBI to prepare for a future pilot study.The aim of this study is to verify the utility of using physical performance to discriminate the presence of dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) in older adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 382 community-dwelling older adults. DAO was identified when dynapenia (cut-off points of 88 cm for women). Physical performance was assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). SPPB scores and DAO were inversely associated even after adjustment (OR 0.69; 95%CI 0.58-0.83). Cut-off points of ≤9 for SPPB scores were the most efficient for discriminating the presence of DAO in both men (AUC= 0.836; 95%CI 0.76-0.89; sensitivity 90.91% and specificity 60.33%) and women (AUC= 0.677; 95%CI 0.62-0.73; sensitivity 73.33% and specificity 40.91%). Physical performance assessed with SPPB can discriminate DAO and be useful for the timely identification and management of this condition in older adults.In the present work sodium alginate functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) reinforced poly (vinyl alcohol) nanocomposite films were prepared by solution casting technique. Sodium alginate surface functionalizing on the HNTs through hydrogen bonding was confirmed by spectroscopic and morphological analysis. The functionalized HNTs were successfully incorporated into the PVA matrix. Further, the films were characterized by using FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, AFM, UTM, WCA and swelling ratio analysis. The obtained results indicated improved physico-thermal properties, and uniform distribution of nanotubes in the matrix and roughness of the surface compared with the pristine PVA films. After inclusion of functionalized nanotubes causes enhancement of tensile strength as well as young's modulus of the nanocomposite films. Water contact angle measurement was carried out to know the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the films and results were correlated with swelling ratio analysis. Furthermore, the films were analyzed for in-vitro biocompatibility studies. In -vitro enzymatic degradation was carried out in PBS media and cellular behaviour studies were analyzed using NIH3T3 cell lines. The results showed enhancement in the enzymatic degradation, proliferation, adhesion activity compared to that of pristine PVA films. In extension, nanocomposite films were subjected to hemocompatibility studies using human erythrocyte. The results revealed that nanocomposite films were biocompatible and hemocompatible. The fabricated films can be used in biomedical application.
Pancreatic cancer is a deadly malignancy with limited screening and few modifiable risk factors. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between a modifiable lifestyle behavior, cruciferous vegetable consumption, and pancreatic cancer, both overall and by subgroups based on non-modifiable, established risk factors.
We conducted a hospital-based, case-control study utilizing data from the Patient Epidemiology Data System (1982-1998) at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Buffalo, NY) which included 183 pancreatic cancer patients and 732 cancer-free controls. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire including a 52-item food frequency questionnaire and other epidemiologic data. Multivariable logistic regression, adjusted for age, body mass index (BMI), sex, smoking status, total meat, and family history of pancreatic cancer, was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations between cruciferous vegetable consumption ands with other non- or not easily modifiable risk factors for this deadly malignancy.
Consuming cruciferous vegetables, especially raw cruciferous vegetables, is a modifiable lifestyle behavior which may be inversely associated with pancreatic cancer, including among subgroups with other non- or not easily modifiable risk factors for this deadly malignancy.
Unhealthy lifestyle behaviours contribute to the poor health of people attending alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment. Healthy Recovery is an 8-session group-based intervention that targets smoking, diet and physical inactivity as part of an integrated healthy lifestyle approach. The current study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Healthy Recovery when delivered within residential AOD treatment settings.
The study design was a stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial. Participants were 151 current smokers attending residential AOD programs provided by the Australian Salvation Army (n = 71, Control condition; n = 80, Intervention condition). GSK2982772 The primary outcome was number of cigarettes smoked per day. Secondary outcomes examined other smoking behaviours (7-day point prevalence, use of nicotine replacement therapy [NRT]), diet (servings and variety of fruit and vegetables), and physical activity.
The mean number of cigarettes smoked per day was significantly lower in the Intervention condition at 2-, 5-, and 8-month follow-up.
