8 kg N/ha/yr for N2O), and lower emissions were in the HRNT (annual average 6329 kg C/ha/yr and 3.7 kg N/ha/yr for N2O). A long-term simulation (2001-2015) suggested that the CO2 and N2O emissions were closely correlated with the stover removal degree (SRD), tillage, VWC, soil temperature (ST), years in management (Y), and fertilizer application. Stover and tillage practices had cumulative effects on CO2 emissions. The simulated annual CO2 emissions in 1st year from NRCT, NRNT, and HRCT were 7.8%, 0.0%, and 7.7% higher than that from HRNT, respectively; then the emissions in 15th year were 63.6%, 47.7%, and 29.1% higher, respectively. Meanwhile, there were no cumulative effects on N2O emissions. The results also demonstrated that the RZWQM2 is a promising tool for evaluating the long-term effects of CO2 and N2O emissions on different conservation practices.Global population growth is creating severe pressure on wastewater treatment plants, and specifically on sludge management. Meanwhile, the global challenge of achieving food-security requires the development of green pest control practices that maximize crop productivity. The hydrothermal technology, using subcritical water as the conversion media has been intensively studied, mostly for energy recovery purposes. Here, we focused on the aqueous phase by-product of this process and studied the subcritical water extraction of sewage sludge to recover valuable agrochemicals, with high potential of pre-emergent herbicidal activity. Full characterization of hydrothermal extracts from different reaction temperatures (200-300 °C) and times (30-120 min) highlighted the formation of pyrazine derivatives. Seed germination bioassays with three different species suggested a positive correlation between reaction temperature and extract herbicidal activity. Moreover, differences in seed viability and final root elongation between the tested crop (Trriticum aestivum) and weeds (Lapidium sativum and Amaranthus palmeri) may indicate the competitive abilities that can play a key role in weed management. Our results suggest that subcritical water can be applied as a green solvent for extracting a valuable agrochemical from sewage sludge and improving the circular economy for wastewater treatment.Buckwheat manufacturing produce a large amount of lignocellulosic residue (buckwheat hull), which could be used as substrate in anaerobic digestion, even if hard lignocellulosic structure represents the main obstacle for its degradation. This study presents the results of a laboratory experiment conducted to evaluate the effects of different pretreatments on buckwheat hull anaerobic digestion. To achieve the aim, five pretreatments (alkaline, thermo-alkaline, microwave, ultrasonication and low temperature thermal pretreatment) were studied and the results were compared to non treated buckwheat hull. Cumulative biomethane yields significantly increased after alkaline and thermo-alkaline pretreatments (+61% and +122% with respect to non treated hull, respectively). These results were mainly related to organic matter solubilisation (+772% and +859% of soluble reducing sugars, respectively) and lignin, hemicellulose and cellulose degradation. Overall, process parameters behaviour and digestate quality were not affected by the pretreatments. Alkaline and thermo-alkaline pretreatments were evaluated for their energetic and economic affordability, showing that combination of thermal and alkaline pretreatments ensures significant advantages.Potentially toxic metals are common contaminants associated with sewage sludge, and limited information is available on migration and transformation behavior of potentially toxic metals during anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The aim of this study was to reveal the influence of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) on the solubilization of metals through VFAs-metal complexation. Addition of readily biodegradable extra carbon source at organic loading rate (OLR) of 17.65 gVS/L.d resulted in accumulation of 67,255 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L as VFAs. Low pH values due to VFAs accumulation enhanced the solubilization of Ni and more than 22% of its total concentration became soluble. Subsequent to consumption of VFAs and increase of pH to neutral levels (~7.5), solubility of Ni decreased below 10% of its total concentration. Contrarily, the solubility of Cr reached to 25% of its total concentration at neutral pH values. Presumably the complexation of Cr with dissolved organic matter (DOM) have increased its concentration in the liquid fraction at neutral pH values. Fractionation analysis of metals revealed that AD process altered Cu and Zn speciation between organically-bound and residual fractions, and hence solubility of Zn and Cu remained consistently low over the entire period of the AD process.Forest plays an important role in keeping water ecosystem services, such as drinking water provision. Thus, payment for ecosystem services is an essential instrument to promote forest restoration in agricultural watersheds. However, funds are limited and must be well planned to ensure water resources conservation and water ecosystem services improvement. In this context, our study aimed to identify priority areas for forest restoration, based on water ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. For this, we have developed a decision-making support model for agricultural watersheds (in the Atlantic Forest region), based on mixed approaches, that were multicriteria evaluation (MCE) and Participatory Technique. The model will help decision-makers and stakeholders to set priorities for payment for ecosystem services programs implementation. click here So, we evaluate its application in watersheds with different forest cover patterns to check if it can be applied to different landscape patterns. The base of the model was rgets for forest restoration in the watersheds. We can conclude that for small watersheds, the MCE method, with high-resolution data, supports an appropriate prioritization of areas for forest restoration, aiming at the improvement of water ecosystem services. This way, our model can be applied to various payments for ecosystem services schemes in agricultural landscapes worldwide.
