What is a Real ID?

Real ID is a heightened security driver's license or state identification card which meets federal standards. The Real ID Act, passed in 2005 in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the United States, requires that states meet certain standards in the process of granting or renewing driver's licenses and identification card. The act's goal is to create an identification card that is more reliable and secure, which can be used to travel on air, for law enforcement and government facilities.

The process for obtaining an Real ID in New York is quite easy. The first step is to visit the Secretary of State Driver Services facility in person to submit your application and required documents. You will be required to submit proof of identity, date-of-birth, U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency with a valid ID picture, two proofs of residency and an amount of $28 (see the Fee Chart). After you have submitted all of the required documents and paid the fees The Secretary of State will verify your identity and conduct a background check. If you are approved by the Secretary of State, they will send you a new standard DL or ID to you by mail. If you are approved for an REAL ID the ID will be noted as an official document.

It is essential to keep in mind that if you are planning to travel internationally, you'll need to have an official passport, not a Real ID. Passports are an extremely reliable and durable form of identification, and you'll have to carry it with you in order to travel internationally. You will need a passport or REAL ID to travel on commercial flights in the United States.

How do I obtain an Real ID?

Those that do not comply with the law will be marked as such and not be allowed to use them for federal purposes, such as boarding domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities. The DMV offers a variety of options for individuals to obtain a real ID. This includes online, over the phone, or in person.

A Real ID is a federally compliant DMV-issued driver's licence, permit or non-driver ID card. It will be required for air travel within the United States and to enter some federal buildings beginning in May 2025, unless you hold an active passport. You can tell if you have the Real ID by looking for a gold-colored star in the upper right-hand corner of your card. Non-compliant cards don't have the gold star.

They will also need to bring a valid photo ID and evidence of US citizenship, and proof of state residency. The documents required will vary according to the circumstance, but generally contain one document for each category. For instance evidence of US citizenship could be a birth certificate or naturalization certificate, and evidence of residency in the state could be an utility bill, a bank statement or pay stubs that have their address and name on it.

What do I need bring to the DMV to get a Real ID?

The specific documents you'll need to bring with you to the DMV will vary depending on your particular situation. However, there are a few important things you must keep in mind to bring. Bring two pieces of identification proof. This can be something like an official driver's license, passport, or birth certificate. Second, be sure to bring some form of proof that proves you are a resident of New York.
