How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
A robot vacuum will help you save time and hassle when it comes to regular cleaning. The best models do a great job picking up dust and light debris and many allow you to create no-go zones for pets or power cords.
The more expensive ones will even sweep your floor, but they can't climb up stairs. Choose models that have intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and spacious self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The best robots we tried were efficient, easy-to-use and able to cope with daily debris. robotic vacuum cleaners is also important to choose a model that can take on stairs and has good pick-up power on carpets. If you're looking for a robot with additional features, think about an option that incorporates smart mapping technology or an app that allows you to control it remotely.
Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE and a product reviewer who has tried numerous robotic vacuums, is credited with testing hundreds of robot vacuums. She's a huge fan of robot vacuums that provide the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and refill the water tanks used by mopping robots. She's also a big fan of robots that recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords to ensure they don't trip when climbing stairs.
In comparison to the top-rated models, this Black and Decker vacuum has less object-avoidance technology and its navigation score is lower. It does however have an enormous dust bin that doesn't need regular emptying and has a lengthy battery life. It also has the ability to schedule cleaning sessions and return to where it stopped last, making it easier to clean larger areas. This model is an excellent choice for pet owners as it can avoid hair tangles and food particles.
In our tests we tested the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines an LIDAR sensor that is able to map rooms and identify obstacles using a structured light sensor that can identify objects and detect edges. It can stay clear of liquid droplets, stairs, and furniture legs with this combination. It is also able to save up to four floor plans for future use. It is able to stop and restart the cleaning process at any point, so that you can continue doing chores while it works. The app includes a 3D view of your home with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.
Although this model isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it excels in removing small particles like sand and baking soda, as well as heavier items like orzo pasta and screws made of metal. The only drawback is that it's not able to mop, and has a slightly less impressive navigation system.
The best for Carpet
If you have carpeting, pick an automatic vacuum that scores high for carpet and rug maneuverability and pickup. Many models are good at picking up dust in low-pile carpets, and some are capable of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta and screws made of steel. They don't pick-up fine particles like an upright or canister, and may miss dirt that is close to baseboards or thresholds.
The best choice for most carpeted homes is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop. It allows you to swap out a cleaning bin and mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop that can clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads that spin at 200 rotations a minute. It detects and lifts its pads when it comes into contact with carpet, which prevents the flooring from becoming wet. You don't need remove them or replace them each time. The Q Revo is also more efficient than other robot vacuums and mops in the absence of obstacles and in getting closer to carpets and thresholds.
The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another option worth considering. It did well in our tests and you can set it up to schedule it to sweep your home when you are away. It can also be set to only mop and we loved its impressive navigation on both carpets and floors, as well as its ability to climb over and up onto furniture. The Combo i5 also has a very long runtime and excellent path planning for a device of this size.
If you're looking for a high-tech vacuum, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a great alternative. It has a huge charging dock that can last for weeks without needing to be emptying, and it has amazing navigation abilities and automatic emptying on carpets and floors. It also comes with a smart mapping system that can be set to run only during specific hours (a useful feature for keeping mischievous children and dextrous animals from running wild). The Shark has less powerful suction than other robot vacuums and mops however it's still effective in removing hair and pet hair and is the most affordable of our top choices.
Best for Hard Flooring
Robot vacuums are best for floors made of hardwood, since they can maneuver around obstacles without causing damage to bare surfaces. They are excellent at picking up dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair or larger debris. They lack the suction power of an upright or a top-quality canister vacuum, making them unsuitable for deep cleaning upholstery or carpeted areas.
The best two-in-one robots combine a vacuum and a mop, taking care of an entire task in one pass. Find models that have an onboard sensor that can detect changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction to match. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for example, has this feature and can transition seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.
If you have lots of hardwood flooring in your home you might want to think about a robot mop and vacuum like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is a powerful robotic vacuum that has smart navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it has the ability to mop as well. Its sensors assist it in avoiding stairs and other hazards so you don't need to worry about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.
When you need mops, the eufy S1 Pro is designed to actually wash hardwood floors with downward pressure, rather than wipe them clean to get rid of light dirt and dust. The mop pads that are reusable reduce the amount of waste and make it less likely to spread germs, and can be cleaned in the docking station, saving your time. The mop pads are also able to be dried, washed and reused.
robotic vacuum cleaners and mop can be controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. You can, for example utilize the app to designate areas that the vacuum will not be allowed to enter, label different rooms or schedule specific cleaning times. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock, which collects debris through a trapdoor, and stores it in a disposable or bagless bin, meaning you don't need to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
These robots are specifically designed for smaller spaces. They have smaller bins that hold less debris, and they're more efficient than larger models when it comes to maneuvering tight corners. They can also be placed under furniture that larger robots have difficulty reaching. They are generally less expensive than the pricier picks, as well, but you'll have to manually empty their dirt storage compartments at the end of each cleaning session.
A few years ago, robot vacuums underwent a significant change when manufacturers started adding sensors to help navigate and avoid household objects that traditional sensors would get stuck on or run over. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers were required to clean up after a robotic incident.
The new sensors haven't eliminated all the issues with these machines, however. The lower-end models are unable to navigate the same obstacles as the older models, and require some level of illumination in order to know where they are going. If you are living in a dark space or have a lot of low-profile furniture, consider purchasing a top-mounted spinning LIDAR unit to map your space, as our top overall and runner-up choices do. This will allow them to stay clear of stairs and other obstacles while working in the dark.
In addition to being capable of working in dark they can also be set to use their cliff sensors only when they're on or near the floor, not when they're above them. It is still recommended to cover any mirrors that may hinder this function, however, since the laser used by a LIDAR-based model could bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to think it's in a different room.
A few of the models we recommend also allow you to create virtual no-go zones for areas you don't want the robot to go, which is useful if you have pets or children. Those features aren't available on all the models we've tested and recommend that you go through our complete reviews of the choices below before making your purchase.
