“Sam” yang berarti racun bermakna “Racun Tuhan” atau dalam Bahasa Ibrani ditulis סמאל. Sammael juga dikenal dengan pribadi yang merupakan pendakwa (setan), penggoda, penghancur dan telah dianggap sebagai yang baik dan yang jahat. Ia juga memiliki julukan yang berarti Malaikat Pencabut Nyawa.
Dalam literature Ibrani ialah yang Malaikat yang bergulat dengan Yakub (anak Ishak), Penggoda Hawa (yang menjadi Ular) di Taman Eden, dan seiring berjalannya waktu ia kemudian disebut sang iblis itu sendiri.
Di Surga, ia merupakan anggota dari Kerajaan surga utama. Sebagai malaikat pencabut nyawa ialah satu-satunya malaikat yang tugasnya memberitahukan kepada Pelayan Tuhan jikalau ada di antara manusia yang melakukan dosa dan kejahatan, maka dari itu ia mendapati tempat tertinggi di surga tingkat kelima sebagai Chief Angel dan juga memimpin 2 juta malaikat.
Sesaat sebelum Sammael di cast down, Sam merubah wujudnya menjadi perempuan dan menjadi istri pertama adam (Lilith) lalu ia mengandung dan lahir anak iblis yang bernama Sariel (Pedang Sammael) atau dikenal juga dengan nama Asmodai.
