Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier NCT03603522.
Clinicaltrials.gov Identifier NCT03603522.The presence of unprotected sex activity in women living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who have insufficient glycemic control should be considered as a specific risky behavior. To evaluate risky behaviors, including unprotected sexual activity, sources of information and knowledge related to reproductive health in adolescents and young adult women with T1D (PwT1D) compared to a group of adolescents and young adult women without diabetes (Comparison group). PwT1D and the Comparison group completed a questionnaire with validated measures that assessed reproductive health. PwT1D (n = 115, age = 17.7 ± 3.2 years) and Comparison group (n = 386, age = 18.3 ± 2.9) were recruited. The proportion of women reporting having sex without any contraceptive was similar in both groups (57.1% and 50%, in PwT1D and Comparison group, respectively). The use of non-effective contraceptive was reported in 63.2% and 63.6% of the PwT1D and Comparison group, respectively. Among PwT1D, parents, formal sex education, and friends were the primary source of information on reproductive health. Low levels of knowledge about diabetes and pregnancy were observed in PwT1D. HbA1c level was associated with having at least one sexual activity without any contraception (OR = 1.63, p = 0.039). PwT1D have similar rates of risky behaviors compared to a Comparison group. Sexual risky behaviors should be especially considered in PwT1D with glycemic control above the optimal level. Parents are an important source of reproductive health information for PwT1D. Use of effective contraception should be reinforced in sexually active PwT1D.
The present study evaluated the antimicrobial activities of the medicinal plant Mallotus japonicus against the fish pathogenic bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas salmonicida, Edwardisella tarda and Vibrio anguillarum, and also describes the antimicrobial activities of the major and minor active compounds present within the plant extract. Oxyphenisatin manufacturer The synergistic effects by way of combination of these compounds were also evaluated and described. Chemical constituents of the plant extracts were analysed using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and described.

The diethyl ether-extract of the plant elicited the strongest antibacterial activity against the challenged bacterial species, followed by ethanol- and methanol-extracts. The major active compound of the extracts, bergenin, demonstrated no antibacterial activity, but other compounds in the extracts did.

Mallotus japonicus could be used as a prophylaxis to treat bacterial disease infections of fishes and its diethyl ether-extract has the potential of an alternative to antibiotic treatment in aquaculture.

To determine the incidence and major drivers of catastrophic costs among TB-affected households in Zimbabwe.

We conducted a nationally representative health facility-based survey with random cluster sampling among consecutively enrolled drug-susceptible (DS-TB) and drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) patients. Costs incurred and income lost due to TB illness were captured using an interviewer-administered standardised questionnaire. We used multivariable logistic regression to determine the risk factors for experiencing catastrophic costs.

A total of 841 patients were enrolled and were weighted to 900 during data analysis. There were 500 (56%) males and 46 (6%) DR-TB patients. Thirty-five (72%) DR-TB patients were HIV co-infected. Overall, 80% (95% CI 77-82) of TB patients and their households experienced catastrophic costs. The major cost driver pre-TB diagnosis was direct medical costs. Nutritional supplements were the major cost driver post-TB diagnosis, with a median cost of US$360 (IQR 240-600). Post-TB medisocial protection may reduce catastrophic costs.
Text messaging interventions (TMI) are promising for addressing heavy episodic drinking (HED) in non-treatment-seeking postpartum women. Their anonymous delivery can overcome fear of consequences that often prevents postpartum women from seeking treatment for HED. We assessed feasibility and acceptability of text messaging to inform the development of a tailored TMI for postpartum HED.

We surveyed 165 postpartum women recruited via a national Qualtrics panel on their drinking behaviours, mobile technology use and TMI preferences.

Twenty-five percent of the sample (N= 41) were classified as heavy episodic drinkers, with significant drinking reported before, during and after pregnancy, supporting the need for intervention. Feasibility of text messaging was supported by nearly universal mobile phone ownership and text messaging. Attitudes and intervention preferences varied, with 30% of HEDs likely to participate in an intervention asking them to receive automated messages, and 46% likely to participate in an intervention that included live texting with a counsellor. Respondents were more likely to participate in a study that asked them to respond to messages about mood and stress (63%) than daily drinking behaviours (35%), and were most interested in a TMI that included live texting with a counsellor. Nearly half the sample endorsed fear of child removal as a significant barrier to participation.

Findings support the feasibility of text messaging as an intervention approach for postpartum HEDs. Postpartum women may have unique concerns and preferences that differ from other groups of HEDs, making a user-centred design approach critical.

Immune cells residing in the testicular interstitial space form the immunological microenvironment of the testis. They are assumed to play a role in maintaining testicular homeostasis and immune privilege. However, the immune status and related cell polarization in patients with nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA) remains poorly characterized. System evaluation of the testis immunological microenvironment in NOA patients may help to reveal the mechanisms of idiopathic azoospermia.

The gene expression patterns of immune cells in normal human testes were systematically analyzed by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and preliminarily verification by the human protein atlas (HPA) online database. The immune cell infiltration profiles and immune status of patients with NOA was analyzed by single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA) and gene set variation analysis (GSVA) based on four independent public microarray datasets (GSE45885, GSE45887, GSE9210, and GSE145467), obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) online database.
