Richard Ernst (1933-2021).
When the amount of iron ore was 30%, the crushing strength of ferro-coke dropped to 18.15%. Among the four binders, coal tar pitch could significantly enhance the cold crushing strength of ferro-coke through decreasing the porosity of ferro-coke and improving the bonding effect between carbon matrix particles. In the case of the 10% coal tar pitch addition, the cold crushing strength of ferro-coke was increased from 18.15% to 76.41%; meanwhile, its hot compression strength during gasification improved by 100N.Magnetic nanocomposites based on hydroxyapatite were prepared by a one-step process using the hydrothermal coprecipitation method to sinter iron oxides (Fe3O4 and γ-Fe2O3). The possibility of expanding the proposed technique for the synthesis of magnetic composite with embedded biologically active substance (BAS) of the 2-arylaminopyrimidine group was shown. The composition, morphology, structural features, and magnetic characteristics of the nanocomposites synthesized with and without BAS were studied. The introduction of BAS into the composite synthesis resulted in minor changes in the structural and physical properties. The specificity of the chemical bonds between BAS and the hydroxyapatite-magnetite core was revealed. The kinetics of the BAS release in a solution simulating the stomach environment was studied. The cytotoxicity of (HAP)FexOy and (HAP)FexOy + BAS composites was studied in vitro using the primary culture of human liver carcinoma cells HepG2. The synthesized magnetic composites with BAS have a high potential for use in the biomedical field, for example, as carriers for magnetically controlled drug delivery and materials for bone tissue engineering. In this paper, the fire behavior of unsaturated polyester resin (UP) modified with L-histidinium dihydrogen phosphate-phosphoric acid (LHP), being a novel intumescent fire retardant (IFR), was investigated. Thermal and thermomechanical properties of the UP with different amounts of LHP (from 10 to 30 wt. %) were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) as well as dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Reaction to small flames was studied by horizontal burning (HB) test, while fire behavior and smoke emission were investigated with the cone calorimeter (CC) and smoke density chamber. Further, the analysis of volatile products was conducted (TGA/FT-IR). It was observed that the addition of LHP resulted in the formation of carbonaceous char inhibiting the thermal decomposition, burning rate and smoke emission. The most promising results were obtained for the UP containing 30 wt. % of LHP, for which the highest reduction in maximum values of heat release rate (200 kW/m2) and total smoke release (3535 m2/m2) compared to unmodified polymer (792 kW/m2 and 6895 m2/m2) were recorded. However, some important disadvantage with respect to water resistance was observed.Extraintestinal manifestations are common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and optic neuritis (ON) is a rare but severe one. This study aimed to evaluate possible factors associated with ON in patients with IBD. Adult patients with IBD who were not with concomitant ON on the index date identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) from the years 2000 to 2013 were included. A four-fold matched group was selected using age, sex and year of index date for comparison. All the patients were followed up until the development of ON or the end of the study period. Data of included patients were extracted and analyzed statistically. The mean follow-up time for all patients was 7.13 ± 5.21 years. At the study period conclusion, eight (0.18%) and five (0.003%) patients with and without IBD, respectively, had developed ON (p = 0.001). Adjusted HRs showed that patients with IBD aged between 30 and 39 years, with comorbidities including neuromyelitis optica (NMO), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and with a higher Charlson Comorbidity Index, had a significantly higher risk of developing ON (all p less then 0.005). Among the eight IBD patients who developed ON, only one patient was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, the male gender was slightly dominant, and two (25%) patients received antitumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNF α) treatment for IBD. Patients with IBD have a higher risk of developing ON compared to patients without IBD. ON occurs more frequently in IBD patients aged between 30 and 39 years, with comorbidities including NMO, ADEM and SLE. Other factors besides anti-TNF α treatment for IBD are more likely associated with the development of ON.This study aimed at understanding the effect of metformin on histone H3 methylation, DNA methylation, and chromatin accessibility in lung cancer cells. Metformin significantly reduced H3K4me3 level at the promoters of positive cell cycle regulatory genes such as CCNB2, CDK1, CDK6, and E2F8. Eighty-eight genes involved in cell cycle showed reduced H3K4me3 levels in response to metformin, and 27% of them showed mRNA downregulation. Metformin suppressed the expression of H3K4 methyltransferases MLL1, MLL2, and WDR82. The siRNA-mediated knockdown of MLL2 significantly downregulated global H3K4me3 level and inhibited lung cancer cell proliferation. MLL2 overexpression was found in 14 (33%) of 42 NSCLC patients, and a Cox proportional hazards analysis showed that recurrence-free survival of lung adenocarcinoma patients with MLL2 overexpression was approximately 1.32 (95% CI = 1.08-4.72; p = 0.02) times poorer than in those without it. Metformin showed little effect on DNA methylation and chromatin accessibility at the promoter regions of cell cycle regulatory genes. The present study suggests that metformin reduces H3K4me3 levels at the promoters of positive cell cycle regulatory genes through MLL2 downregulation in lung cancer cells. Additionally, MLL2 may be a potential therapeutic target for reducing the recurrence of lung adenocarcinoma.Achieving intracellular delivery of protein therapeutics within cells remains a significant challenge. Although custom formulations are available for some protein therapeutics, the development of non-toxic delivery systems that can incorporate a variety of active protein cargo and maintain their stability, is a topic of great relevance. This study utilized ionic polyphosphazenes (PZ) that can assemble into supramolecular complexes through non-covalent interactions with different types of protein cargo. We tested a PEGylated graft copolymer (PZ-PEG) and a pyrrolidone containing linear derivative (PZ-PYR) for their ability to intracellularly deliver FITC-avidin, a model protein. In endothelial cells, PZ-PYR/protein exhibited both faster internalization and higher uptake levels than PZ-PEG/protein, while in cancer cells both polymers achieved similar uptake levels over time, although the internalization rate was slower for PZ-PYR/protein. Selleckchem WM-1119 Uptake was mediated by endocytosis through multiple mechanisms, PZ-PEG/avidin colocalized more profusely with endo-lysosomes, and PZ-PYR/avidin achieved greater cytosolic delivery.
