South Korea's democratic system is vulnerable to populist tendencies. It's still better than was expected.

The country is in search of an alternative development model. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for the ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are signs that a secularist culture is beginning to emerge.

Origins

During prehistoric times the ancestors of the modern Koreans lived by hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops like millet and beans. At the close of the period, the state of Baekje was founded by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom expanded its territory into the southwest of the peninsula and clashed with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje included elements of Confucian thinking into its state belief system and made the male centered filiopiety concept as a law in 1390 CE. In the name of filiopiety fathers were accountable to their families, and had to be revered and obeyed by all people, even their children and grandchildren.

Goryeo, a nation that ruled from 918 until 1392 CE in the year 1392 CE, introduced to the world the Hangul Alphabet based on the shapes that were created by the mouth when it pronounces. This greatly improved communication and led to a rise in the writing of Buddhist text. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. Development in Korea

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged, and the three kingdoms began to collaborate in order to expand their territory. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated the other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase the way it develops appears to be in flux. The people who are awed by the huge costs of the old systems advocate a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand supporters of the old system want to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and generating fear over potential job losses.

Academics and analysts are divided over the extent to which Korea's development is being driven by these two trends. This article reviews the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political evolution including democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87) democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also identifies some important factors that appear to be shaping these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their views to this segment. A survey from 2009 showed that nearly one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed that there was no scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% claimed that it did not align with their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they didn't understand it. This level of disbelief approaches that in the United States, where a majority of people do not accept that humans evolved from less advanced species of life.

In the past, the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on educating students and the introduction of Christ to them. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. This event drew a large audience of professors, scientists, and church leaders.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts, as well as other foreign fashion elements. However, his rule was short-lived. After Gungye was defeated by a powerful local leader, Wang Geon, who united Goryeo with Baekje and Silla in 935, Later Baekje was peacefully incorporated into Goryeo as an alternative state. Additionally, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized government system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From then on the Korean peninsula was controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla slowly developed into powerful states on the peninsula, and in Manchuria.
