How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums can help you save time and effort when it comes to cleaning. Top performers do a good job picking up dust and other small particles and allow you to create no-go zones for pets or power cords.

The more expensive ones can even mop your floor but they aren't able to climb up the stairs. Find models that feature intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and roomy self-emptying bins.

Best Overall

The best robots we tried were reliable, user-friendly and able to keep up with the daily debris. It is also important to choose a model capable of handling stairs and that has decent pick-up power on carpets. And, if you're looking for additional features, you might be interested in a model with smart mapping technology or an application that allows you to control the robot remotely.

Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer for PEOPLE and a product reviewer who has tested several robotic vacuums, has been credited with testing dozens of robot vacuums. She's a fan of the robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying bins and charging docks that automatically empty and refill water tanks for mopping robots. She's also a fan of the robots that can detect landmarks such as furniture legs and power cords, so they don't get tripped up when climbing stairs.

Compared to the top-rated models, this Black and Decker robot vacuum is less equipped with object-avoidance technology and its navigation score is lower. It does however have an ample dust bin that doesn't need frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. Additionally, it comes with an option that allows you to plan cleaning times and return to the location where it last stopped which makes it easier to clean larger homes. This model is a great choice for pet owners, since it is able to avoid hair tangles and food particles.

In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined a LIDAR (light) sensor which can map rooms and detect obstacles with a structured-light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. The combination lets it avoid stairs, droplets of liquid, and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps to be used in the future for references. It can pause and resume cleaning at any time, so that you can continue with your chores while it is working. The app provides an interactive 3D model of your home with room labels and advanced cleaning options.

The robot isn't as effective at cleaning as our top models, however it is great at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws and fine particles such as sand. The only drawback is that it's not able to mop, and has a less effective navigation system.

The best option for Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, look for a robotic vacuum that has excellent pickup and good maneuverability scores on carpet and rug. Many models are capable of picking up dust in low-pile rugs. Some are capable of sweeping up heavier debris, such as orzo pasta and screws made of steel. They aren't able to pick up fine particles like an upright or canister, and they may miss dirt close to thresholds or baseboards.

The best option for carpeted areas is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop. It allows you to swap between a cleaning bin and mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo, for example, is a vacuum cleaner and mops with circular pads that rotate at a speed of 200 rotations per minute. It is able to detect and lift its pads when it comes in contact with carpet, which prevents the flooring from becoming wet. You don't need remove them or replace them each time. The Q Revo is also superior to other robot vacuum/mops at staying clear of obstacles, getting close to rugs and thresholds, and eliminating obstacles.

Another solid option is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which performed very well in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean while you're away from home. It can be set to mop only. We were impressed by its ability to navigate on floors that are not bare as well as carpets. The Combo i5 also has a extremely long run time and excellent path planning for such a small device.

If you're looking for a top-of-the-line vacuum that is high-tech, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a fantastic option. It comes with a huge dock that can last for weeks without having to be emptied. It also features impressive ability to navigate and auto-empty on carpets and floors with no floor. It also has an intelligent mapping system that can be programmed to operate during certain hours of the day (a handy feature for keeping mischievous kids and dextrous pets from causing havoc). The Shark is less powerful than other mop/robot combination models however, it still manages to pick hair and pet hair with a high degree of accuracy. It's also the most affordable price of our top picks.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the best option for hardwood floors since they are able to easily maneuver around obstacles and not damage bare surfaces. They are excellent at of removing dust and crumbs, but they aren't able to handle pet hair and other large debris. They don't have the suction power of an expensive upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the best choice for carpeted areas or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.

The best two-in-1 robots combine a vacuum and a mop to complete an entire task in one sweep. Choose models that have an onboard sensor that detects any changes in the flooring and adjust suction accordingly. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for example, has this feature and can go seamlessly from soft to hard carpeting.

If your home is comprised of hardwood floors, think about a robotic mop and vacuum combination like the eufy S1 Pro. This model uses a powerful robotic vacuum that has intelligent navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces, plus it can mop too. The sensors help it avoid stairs and other hazards so you don't have to be worried about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, not simply swab them to get rid of dirt and dust. The mop pads that are reusable reduce waste, reduce the spread of germs and can be cleaned at the docking station, saving your time. The mops can also be washed and dried to stop the spread of mold.

Both the robovac as well as the mop can be controlled by your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can use the app to set up a zone that the vacuum cannot enter, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning sessions for specific areas. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that collects debris through a trapdoor and puts it in a disposable or bagless bin, meaning you don't need to manually empty the bin every time as you would with other models.

Best for Small Spaces

Like the name suggests, these robots are best suited for small spaces. They have smaller bins, that can store less debris. They are also more efficient when it comes to getting around corners better as opposed to larger models. They can also be tucked under furniture, where the bigger robots struggle to reach. They are generally less expensive than the pricier picks, however, you'll need to empty their dirt compartments at the end of each cleaning session.

A few years ago robotic vacuums experienced significant changes. Manufacturers began to add sensors that could help them avoid household items that conventional sensors might become stuck on or run across. These improvements reduced the number times our testers had to clean up after a robot snag.

However, the latest sensors haven't resolved all of the problems these machines have. The cheapest models are still struggling with the same challenges that the older ones did and most need a certain amount of light to see where they're going. If you reside in a dark area or have lots of low-profile furniture, consider buying a model that utilizes a top-mounted spinning LIDAR unit to map your space, as our top overall and runner-up picks do. This allows them to stay clear of stairs and other obstacles while working in the dark.

In addition to being capable of working in the dark, these models can be set to use their cliff sensors only when they're close to or on the floor, not above them. robot vacuum cleaner on sale 'll still want to cover any mirrors that could hinder this function, however, because the laser used by a laser-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces, causing the robot to think it is in another room.

Some of the models we recommend allow you to set up virtual no-go zones in areas you do not want the robot go, which is beneficial if you have small pets or children. These features aren't available on all models we test. Read our full reviews before deciding.
