The Theory of Evolution
The theory of evolution is based on the notion that certain traits are passed on more frequently than others. These traits make it easier for individuals to survive and reproduce and thus increase in numbers over time.

Evolution is an inevitable process
Natural selection is the process that leads to organisms evolving to be the best adjusted to the environment they reside in. It is one of the main mechanisms of evolution, along with mutations or migrations, as well as genetic drift. The ones with traits that help survival and reproduction are more likely to pass these characteristics on to their children, which results in gradual changes in the frequency of genes over time. Another reason why some students do not understand natural selection is because they confuse it with soft inheritance. While soft inheritance isn't an essential condition for evolution, it can be a key element of it. This is because it allows for random modification of DNA, as well as the creation of genetic variants which are not immediately beneficial to an organism. These mutations are then used as raw material by natural selection.

Macroevolution takes a long period to complete and is only visible in fossil records. Microevolution however is a process which occurs much faster and is visible in living organisms. Microevolution is triggered by genetic mutation and selection, which operate on a smaller scale than macroevolution. It can be accelerated by other mechanisms, such as gene flow or horizontal gene transfer.
Evolution is based upon chance
Evolutionists have long used the argument that evolution is a random process. This argument is faulty and it is important to know why. The argument confuses randomness with contingency. This error is rooted in a misreading of the nature of biological contingency, as described by Stephen Jay Gould. He believed that the expansion of genetic information isn't simply random, but also contingent on previous events. He based this on the fact that DNA is a replica of DNA, and they themselves depend on other molecules. In other words there is a causality that is the basis of all biological processes.
The argument is flawed because it relies on the rules and practices of science. These statements are not just not logically sound, but also incorrect. The science practice supposes that causal determinism not strict enough to be able to predict all natural phenomena.
Brendan Sweetman's book aims to give a balanced and readable introduction to the relationship of evolutionary theory and Christian theism. He is a patient, rather than a flamboyant writer which is in line with his objectives, which are to separate the scientific validity of evolutionary theory from its religious implications and cultivating the ability to consider the implications of the controversial subject.
The book may not be as comprehensive as it could have been however, it provides an excellent overview of the debate. It also clarifies that evolutionary theory is a well-confirmed scientific theory that is widely accepted by experts in the field and deserving of rational assent. The book is not as convincing when it comes down to the question of whether God has any role in the evolution process.
