Assigning animals to their corresponding breeds through breed informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is required in many fields. For instance, it is used in the traceability and the authentication of meat and other livestock products. SNPs' information for several pork breeds are now accessible thanks to the availability of dense SNP chips. These SNP chips cover a large number of molecular markers distributed across the entire genome. To identify the pork breed from a sample of industrial meat, one must analyze a large panel of genetic markers depending on the SNP chip used. The analysis of such large datasets requires intensive work. This leads to the idea of creating less dense chips of breed informative markers based on a reduced number of SNPs. Therefore, the analysis of the data emanating from the genotyping of these reduced chips will require less time and effort.

The objective of this study is to find the most informative SNPs for the discrimination between four pig breeds, namely Durocr livestock animals.
Sleep problems reported by hematological cancer patients are usually linked to higher levels of cancer-related fatigue. Although the awareness of sleep problems in solid cancer patients is rising, there has been less attention to the issue in hematological cancer patients. The present study assesses the differences in sleep by comparing physical activity and fatigue levels among hematological cancer patients during the onset of chemotherapy. Furthermore, it investigates the relationship between sleep, physical activity, and fatigue through mediation analysis.

The recruited sample consists of 58 newly diagnosed hematological cancer patients (47.1 ± 15.4 yrs; 51.7% males). Subjects completed questionnaires assessing sleep (PSQI), physical activity (visual analogue scale), fatigue (MFI-20), anxiety, depression (HADS), and quality of life (EORTC QLQ-C30) within two weeks from starting treatment.

The sample reported more sleep problems in comparison to the German population norm. The classification as good (ca 25%) or bad sleepers (ca 75%) showed less frequent physical activity (p = .04), higher fatigue (p = .032), anxiety (p = .003), depression (p = .011) and pain (p = .011) in bad sleepers. This study highlights the combined action of sleep problems and physical activity on fatigue during the onset of induction chemotherapy. These two parameters could represent meaningful intervention targets to improve a patient's status during chemotherapy.

Breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of adverse outcomes, called late effects, years after the completion of active treatment. Late effects can significantly impair physical functioning. The current study aimed to explore breast cancer survivors' experiences of late effects, their emotional responses to existing or potential late effects and their perceived impact.

A total of 36 women treated for breast cancer in the last 10years participated in semi-structured telephone interviews. Participant views were sought with respect to knowledge, experience, and perceived longer-term risk. A thematic analysis was conducted.

Four themes emerged from the data (1) late effects awareness, (2) framing and coping, (3) uncertainty and (4) management. There was a range of emotional responses to late effects; however, many participants reported being unaware of their risk of late effects. Participants conceptualised late effects as any long-term effect of treatment regardless of the time of onset. Women reported living with constant uncertainty and feared cancer recurrence. Many were focused on managing long-term treatment side effects, rather than late effects.

National guidelines recommend patients be informed about late effects; however, the results of this study suggest a gap between policy and practice. Evidence-based interventions are needed to equip women with strategies to physically and emotionally manage late effects.Venous blood is a preferred matrix for the determination of total mercury (Hg) in human biomonitoring but has some drawbacks such as the requirement for an uninterrupted cold chain for transport and storage and the need of medical personnel for sample collection. Therefore, we tested and implemented a simpler and less expensive method for measuring Hg in human blood using dried blood spots (DBS). For method development, we investigated the influence of different storage conditions (temperature, storage vessel, time) on DBS samples. For method validation, we compared DBS and venous blood and investigated whether DBS sampling is suitable for measuring Hg in the general population in countries with low Hg exposure such as Germany. Based on our results, we found that pre-cleaned glass tubes were most suitable for storage of DBS samples, as this allowed the samples to remain stable for at least 4 weeks even at high temperatures (40 °C). When comparing venous blood and DBS, a very good correlation (r = 0.95, p  less then  0.01, Spearman-Rho) and high precision of DBS (mean relative standard deviation 8.2% vs. 7.2% in venous blood samples) were observed. Comparing the recoveries of both matrices in different concentration ranges, the variation of the recoveries decreases with increasing Hg concentration. The mean recoveries also decreased with increasing Hg concentration. Overall, we found comparable results for DBS and venous blood using direct Hg analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that DBS are suitable for Hg biomonitoring in the general population in Germany and improved the storage conditions for the DBS.
