How to Buy a Driving License in Germany
If you decide to move to Germany from a foreign country or US state that has reciprocity with Germany then you could exchange your license. In some cases you might be required to take a practical and theory exam.

What is a driver's license?
A driving license is a document that permits you to operate the vehicle. It includes information like your name, father's name date of birth, address, vehicle types, emergency contact, blood group, fingerprint impression and driver's photo. The driving license also includes a magnet strip, though it isn't currently being used.
In order to pass the driving test in Germany you must pass both the theoretical and practical tests. The driving test typically lasts 45 minutes and is administered by a qualified examiner. The examiner will also ask you a few general questions, and will ask you questions about German road signs, regulations and other information. The examiner will inform you whether you passed or failed the test. If you succeed, you will receive a slip allowing you to drive until you can take your license for after a few weeks.
When you are taking your driving test the most important thing to do is to remain calm and relaxed. Many people fail their driving test because they panic or forget the rules of road. It is important to practice as much driving as you can prior to your driving exam, especially when the driving rules in your country are different.
If you're in Germany for a short duration, then your driving license from your home country may suffice. If you're moving permanently to Germany and you're moving to Germany for a long time, you'll need a new license to drive. Most countries have reciprocal agreements. you can exchange your license for a Fuhrerschein once you register your address in Germany.
However, you have to first present a certificate attesting to your eyesight and health. You also must take driving lessons at an German Fahrschule, and be able to pass both the theoretical and practical tests before you can receive your license. It's expensive, but it is the only way to legally drive a car in Germany. This search engine will help you find driving instructors in English on the Internet.
How do I obtain a German driver's license?
If you're from a country or state that has a partnership with Germany It may be possible to exchange your driver's licence in exchange for a Fuhrerschein (German driving licence) without taking the test in either theory or practice. The exact procedure is different from country to country, and you should check with the local driving office for the most up-to-date information. In general, you'll have to declare your residency and provide proof that prove you are healthy and have a clear vision. In certain instances, you could also be required to present certificates attesting your license has not been suspended or revoked.
For example, if you're from Australia or New Zealand, you can change your license to a German one without having to take any tests. If you're from South Australia or Tasmania, however you must pass a theory and a practical test is required to get an official driving license.
The process of obtaining a German driver's license can be more complicated for drivers who are from countries which don't have a formal agreement with Germany, or from the United States. You'll usually need to pass a theoretical and practical exam, as well as taking a course at a German driving school before you can be granted a Fuhrerschein. You'll also have to register your vehicle and complete the first aid course.
You'll need to make an appointment with your Strassenverkehrsamt or Fuhrerscheinstelle and bring all the required documentation. You'll be sent a confirmation letter after your appointment that will tell you when you can pick-up your German driving license. It could take anywhere from four to six weeks for the application to be processed.
If you already have an German license, it's valid for 15-years. If it's coming up for expiration you can renew it by bringing your driving license along with a passport photograph to a local licensing authority. A small fee of EUR24 is required. It is important to inform your licensing authority immediately in the event that you lose your German driver's license. This will help prevent fraudulent use of your identity and/or unauthorised activities. You will need to submit an official letter that states you will return the license in the event of being found.
Can I get a German driving license if I have an international license?
If you hold a driving license from an EU or EEA country or a country which has a reciprocity agreement with Germany, then you can often simply swap your driving license from a foreign country to one that is a German one without taking any formal or theoretical exams. führerschein kaufen deutschland is only feasible when the driver has been driving for a period of period of time, or has established a regular residence in Germany and registered their residential address.
You'll still have to show proof of identity and a passport photograph. You must also register your vehicle with authorities and pass a safety inspection (TUV). You must also obtain insurance for your vehicle, since it is a requirement in Germany. More information can be found on our page regarding driving in Germany.
As a general rule, you can only keep your driver's licence for 15 years. You must renew your license at least four weeks prior to the date of expiration. This will give you time to complete all the necessary documentation. You'll need the renewal form, your current driving licence and a passport photo from the last few months along with you.
The requirements for changing your driving license from another country can vary depending the location you reside in. If you aren't sure, we recommend that you contact your local driver's licensing office (Fuhrerscheinstelle) for more specific details.
You will need a copy of the original document, a written statement (or theft report) as well as an image of your passport. Then you'll need to take either a practical or written driving exam, as well passing a medical exam.
During the driving test, which is a practical one, you'll be asked questions about traffic laws in Germany. You'll then be given the opportunity to show your driving skills on a public road. If you're successful, you will receive your new German driving licence within a few weeks.
Can I get a German license if I already have an US driving license?
Rules vary depending on the state where your license was issued. In the US, each state has its own set of rules for driver licensing. For instance in Massachusetts those who hold an active German driving license are able to drive in the USA for up to a year without having to exchange or have their US licenses changed.
It is highly recommended that those who are planning to remain in the USA for longer than the duration or who plan on returning to Germany as permanent residents get an International Driver's License while they are in the USA. If you don't, you'll need to change your American driving license for one German one when you visit the Fuhrerscheinstelle in Germany.
You can find information about the process and the documentation required in Anlage 11 of the German Federal Road Traffic Act (Standard-Fahrzeugsteuergesetz, SFTG). The Anlage includes the states and countries where the driver's license of the country is transferable without having to retake a driving test. The list includes Alabama, Arkansas Colorado, Florida Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky Louisiana, Mississippi Missouri, Montana Minnesota, North Carolina Nebraska Nevada Ohio, Oklahoma South Dakota Tennessee Texas Virginia and West Virginia.
If you're not from a state or country which is listed in Anlage 11, or you would like to obtain a different type of license, you'll be required to complete the full course of instruction and complete all tests. This includes taking an instructor-led driving course as well as taking the theory course, passing a multiple-choice test and a test of practical to prove that you understand the rules of driving and can handle a vehicle. The test is administered by an experienced examiner. The cost of the theory and driving instruction will vary, but could range from a few hundred dollars to two thousand euros.
You'll also need to purchase mandatory car insurance. Again, the prices will differ from one company to the next company. You can compare quotes on internet. Some of the largest companies in Germany include DA Direkt and ADAC.
