This study demonstrates that while Australia's MDR-TB burden is low, cases will continue to occur until TB control improves in countries with which Australia shares cultural and migration links. Australia should continue to support national and regional TB control programmes to sustain progress towards national elimination of TB. This study's findings support a review of data fields in the national TB dataset with potential expansion or adjustment to improve national data reporting, including the monitoring of evidence-based recommendations for the prevention and management of MDR-TB.

In 2019, there were 206 notifications of IMD. Of these, 202 were laboratory-confirmed cases analysed by the reference laboratories of the Australian National Neisseria Network (NNN). Of the 202 laboratory-confirmed cases of IMD, 167 were confirmed by bacterial culture and 35 by nucleic acid amplification testing, and all had the serogroup determined. Fine typing was available on 146 samples (146/202, 72%). Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (MenB) infections accounted for 50.0% (101/202); MenW for 26.2% (53/202); MenY for 20.8% (42/202) and MenC for 3.0% of cases (6/202). Of the MenW cases, 88% were PorA antigen type P1.5,2, and 65% of these (24/37) were sequence type 11, the hypervirulent strain reported in recent outbreaks in Australia and overseas. The primary peaks of IMD notifications in Australia in 2019 were observed in infants less than 1 year of age (36/202, 18%) and in adults aged 65 years or older (39/202, 19%). MenB infections predominated in those aged less than 5 years and those aged 15-19 years, whereas MenW and MenY infections predominated in those aged 45 years or more. All 167 IMD isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. One isolate out of these 167 (0.6%) was resistant to penicillin with an MIC ≥ 1mg/L; 154/167 isolates (92%) had decreased susceptibility to penicillin. All isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin, and one isolate was resistant to rifampicin.The Australian Paediatric Surveillance Unit (APSU) has been prospectively collecting national data on rare childhood conditions since 1993, with monthly reporting of cases by paediatricians. In this report we describe annual results from studies for ten communicable diseases and complications of communicable diseases that were conducted using APSU surveillance in 2019 and place these in an historic context. Results are reported on acute flaccid paralysis, congenital cytomegalovirus infection, neonatal herpes simplex virus infection, perinatal exposure to HIV, paediatric HIV infection, severe complications of seasonal influenza, juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (JoRRP), congenital rubella syndrome, congenital varicella syndrome and neonatal varicella infection. APSU provides rich clinical data to complement data collected from other surveillance systems and to improve understanding and response to rare childhood infections.Confirmed cases in Australia 12,636 notifications and 147 deaths as at 19 July 2020; during the latest reporting fortnight (6 to 19 July 2020) there have been 3,791 notifications and 37 deaths. The number of new cases reported nationally increased from 897 in the previous fortnight (22 June to 5 July) to 3,791 (6 to 19 July). The large increase in cases is due to multiple epidemiologically-linked outbreaks across a range of settings and locations in Victoria (94%; 3,575 cases), with very few cases reported by other jurisdictions (216) in this reporting period. Of the 3,575 cases reported in Victoria, all except one were reported as locally acquired. The majority of these cases were linked to several outbreaks. Of the 216 cases reported from other jurisdictions, approximately 55% (119 cases) were locally acquired. A total of 37 deaths were reported, all from Victoria. On average, 271 cases were reported each day over the reporting period, an increase from 54 cases per day over the previous reporting period. Testing rates have increased across all jurisdictions, predominantly in Victoria, with the nationwide cumulative positivity rate remaining very low at less than 0.5%. As at 19 July, a small proportion of cases have experienced severe disease, requiring hospitalisation or intensive care, with some fatalities. The cumulative crude case fatality rate amongst Australian cases is 1.2%. People who are older and have one or more comorbidity are more likely to experience severe disease.
