This study quantifies the magnitude and persistence of differences in adverse birth outcomes between descendants of foreign-born and US-born women by race/ethnicity. Using 1978-2015 California birth records, I linked records of infants to those of their mothers to create an intergenerational sample (N = 501,323 second generation mothers and 633,102 third generation daughters). Prevalence of low birthweight and preterm birth were calculated in both generations by race/ethnicity, and foreign-born status. An initial foreign-born advantage in birth outcomes is present among most racial/ethnic groups with the exception of foreign-born Asian women. In the subsequent generation, the foreign-origin advantage diminishes for most groups and a foreign-origin disadvantage in low birthweight emerges for descendants of Asian women. Findings largely persist after adjustment for sociodemographic and healthcare-related characteristics. These results underscore the importance of disaggregating by race, ethnicity, and foreign origin when possible to better understand perinatal health disparities in the population.As medicinal plants can accumulate harmful metals from the native soil, people's consumption of these materials may cause the human body to accumulate toxic metal elements. This has given rise to people's concerns about the quality and safety of Chinese medicinal materials. This research aims to determine the levels of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Hg and Pb in four medicinal plant species (Aster tataricus L.f., Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge, Radix Aucklandiae, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi) and their native soil. All samples were collected from Qian'an city, beside Yanshan Mountain Range in Tangshan city, east Hebei Province, north China. The contents of heavy metals we detected in the soil conformed to the current limits. However, the Cd and Hg in the soil had a very high potential ecological risk because of their contents higher than the base level of local soil. The contents of Cu, Cd, Hg and Pb in some medicinal herbs exceeded the standards. The content of Cu in Radix Aucklandiae exceeded the standard by 3 times, and others exceeded the standard by less than one time. The comprehensive health risk assessment of heavy metals with chronic non-carcinogenic effects for human body showed that none of the four medicinal herbs can create a health risk. Thus, there is no strong positive correlation between heavy metal pollution in medicinal herbs and that in the native soil. Further research should be investigated to the connection between the heavy metal levels in the soil and plants, and the comprehensive effects of soil, air and irrigation water on heavy metal pollution of Chinese herbal medicines. We also recommend that Chinese herbal medicines should be cultivated and gathered only from controlled or uncontaminated areas.Several scoring scales for the assessment of microsurgical skills have been established and validated with the same basic parameters. The study aims to review the existing scales to highlight those parameters, which can be utilized uniformly across all neurosurgical training centers. An online search was conducted and all the surgical scores pertinent to microsurgical suturing were reviewed. The scales were compared to identify parameters, which were important for skill development and assessment in neurosurgical trainees. Seven assessment scales were identified which assessed the trainee's proficiency in microsurgical suturing. The objective structured assessment of technical skills (OSATS) and Northwestern Objective Microanastomosis Assessment Tool (NOMAT) were identified as the most widely used and validated assessment scales. MELK-8a The newer scales University of Western Ontario microsurgical skills acquisition/assessment (UWOMSA) and structured assessment of microsurgery (SAMS) were notable for the division of the skills. The knot strength, suture separation, and suture intervals were the most important parameters in all scales. Each scale has its strength in the assessment of the microsurgical proficiency of neurosurgical trainees. However, a more uniform scale that can be applied as per the level of the neurosurgical trainee is necessary.Intracranial hypertension may be idiopathic or due to multiple etiologies. Some bone dysplasias and chronic shunt overdrainage syndrome may sometimes lead to intracranial hypertension associated with craniocerebral disproportion due to thickening of cranial diploe. The internal cranial expansion procedure has been used for patients with intracranial hypertension, whether or not associated with craniocerebral disproportion. Its purpose is to increase the intracranial volume by drilling down the inner table. This technique enables the craniocerebral disproportion to be improved and intracranial hypertension reduced. In other etiologies of intracranial hypertension with non-thickened diploe, internal cranial expansion may not be enough to resolve the hypertension. For these cases we propose a modification of the technique by expanding the cranial vault outwards; external cranial expansion. We describe this technique as used in a pediatric patient who presented with chronic headache, tonsillar ectopia, and sleep apnea syndrome. This patient also had a multisuture craniosynostosis, a non-thickened diploe, and intracranial hypertension.Results of path analysis involving sexual minority participants (N = 1317) from diverse sociopolitical contexts revealed health outcomes to be associated with internalized homonegativity and the resolution of conflict between religious and sexual minority identities. Contrary to expectations, several markers of religiousness were not directly associated with either improved or worsened health outcomes for depression or anxiety. However, religious activity moderated the influence of internalized homonegativity (IH) on depression such that IH was less strongly related to depression among individuals who frequently attended religious services than among individuals who infrequently attended religious services. These findings have special salience for advancing a more accurate understanding of conservatively religious sexual minorities and directing culturally sensitive research, clinical services, and public policy.
