Main Results A total of 7034 data points were available for analysis in the three studies. In Study 1, the percentage agreement of an accurate weight estimation in 50 children, with two raters, was 47/50 (94%) with a Cohen's Kappa of 0.93 (0.81 - 1.0). In Study 2, the ICC for 6720 habitus score assessments, with 112 raters, was 0.73 (0.68 - 0.80). In Study 3, the ICC for 264 weight estimations (in terms of an accurate weight estimation, with 33 raters) was 0.88 (0.72 - 0.97). Conclusions There was good inter-rater reliability in the assessment of habitus and the accuracy of weight estimation for the PAWPER XL tape in this secondary analysis. The findings suggest that reasonable proficiency with the system can be achieved with minimal training. It is therefore unlikely that systems such as this require too much training to be practical in emergency care.
This study aimed to assess the desensitizing efficacy of commercially available cow milk compared to potassium nitrate (KNO
) mouthwash and warm saline rinses after nonsurgical periodontal treatment.
A randomized controlled trial was conducted in the Department of Public Health Dentistry of a dental college from August 21, 2018 to September 10, 2018. A total of 75 patients who reported hypersensitivity after scaling and root planing (SRP) were recruited and randomly assigned into three groups cow milk (I), KNO
mouthwash (II), and warm saline rinses (III). Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) was assessed at six time points using the verbal rating scale (VRS) for thermal stimuli and visual analog scale (VAS) for air blast and thermal stimuli. Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). Mean reduction in DH in each group was measured using non-parametric tests.
Patients in all the three groups were found to be comparable with respect to baseline characteristics. selleck kinase inhibitor Mean reduction in VRS and VAS scores for DH in milk and KNO
mouthwash was found to be significantly high as compared to warm saline rinses group.
From the results, cow milk was found to be equivalent in efficacy as compared with KNO
mouthwash but superior to warm saline rinses in treating DH post-SRP.
From the results, cow milk was found to be equivalent in efficacy as compared with KNO3 mouthwash but superior to warm saline rinses in treating DH post-SRP.Streptococcus dysgalactiae has two main subspecies Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies dysgalactiae (SDSD) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (SDSE). Although there are various case reports of SDSE causing clinical infection in humans, very few reports of SDSD causing human infections have been reported in the literature. As of date, there are only five case reports of infection with SDSD and all five patients survived the infection. We report a case of a 40-year-old male who presented with features of right upper limb cellulitis and went into septic shock. This report is unique as it presents the first report of SDSD causing fulminant sepsis in humans. Elevation of total fraction of creatinine kinase was also seen in our patient which could be due to myositis or rhabdomyolysis.Introduction Traumatic lumbar puncture (TLP+) can lead to the iatrogenic infiltration of the central nervous system (CNS) by circulating leukemic blast cells in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The risk of TLP+ is increased by a number of factors at the time of presentation of the disease, such as a high white cell count (WCC), T-ALL phenotype, and unstable clinical condition of the patient. For this reason, the first lumbar puncture (LP) was deferred until Day Eight of prednisolone prophase during remission induction therapy in one set of patients. The objective was to compare the historical cohort of Day-One LP with Day-Eight LP with respect to the incidence of TLP+ and de novo CNS leukemia. Methods A retrospective comparative data analysis of 1,185 childhood ALL patients aged 1-16 years was conducted based on the electronic medical records of the pediatric hematology-oncology department of The Indus Hospital (TIH), Karachi, from January 2010 to August 2018. A total of 600 patients whose LP was finding of a significant increase in the CNS-3 leukemia was noted. More prospective studies are needed to investigate this significant increase in CNS-3 cases.Optic disc pits are rare congenital abnormalities. They are unilateral in 85% of the affected individuals. Optic disc pits occurring in the highly myopic eyes of the older adults are supposed to be acquired due to mechanical expansion of the disc from the axial elongation. High myopia is also a well described association of the optic disc pits of the congenital nature. We present a rare case of bilateral congenital optic disc pits in a 15-year-old girl having anisometropic unilateral axial myopia and the emmetropia in the fellow eye. This unique combination of the findings of unilateral high myopia in a child with bilateral congenital optic disc pits, to the best of our knowledge has not been described in the literature earlier. Our case demonstrates a scenario where two different causative factors for the optic disc pits may be present concurrently in the same instance.Purpose Total hip arthroplasty (THA) and partial hip arthroplasty (PHA) are performed in patients with hip joint dysfunction such as osteoarthritis or hip fractures and are associated with complications including mortality. There is a lack of evidence in the literature regarding whether the type of anesthesia (regional vs. general) is associated with increased postoperative mortality in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty. The present study compares early postoperative mortality between general or regional anesthesia administered to patients undergoing either THA or PHA. Methods A retrospective cohort was assembled using the 2015-2016 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Adult patients undergoing hip arthroplasty under general or regional anesthesia were included. Patients were excluded if receiving any other type of anesthesia, as well as having an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification score ≥ 4, preoperative acute renal failure, severe congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or ascites.
