Culicoides obsoletus is an important pest for animal husbandry. In the world, it is a major vector of bluetongue disease, which has been added to the list of Class A Animal Diseases by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and must be reported in the event of an outbreak. Although numerous studies on Culicoides sampling in farms exist, the distribution of C. obsoletus in different landscapes remains unclear.

This study aimed to assess the effect of landscape type on the distribution of C. obsoletus. Samples were collected using light traps during spring and fall. The effect of landscape type on the distribution of C. obsoletus samples was measured by the maximum entropy model (MaxEnt). UK 5099 Results show that C. obsoletus mainly appears in forests and pastures.

Spodoptera frugiperda, fall armyworm (FAW) is the major pest of maize in Brazil and has readily acquired field resistance to a broad range of synthetic insecticides and to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) insecticidal proteins expressed in important crops. This study aims to understand patterns of cross-resistance in FAW by investigating the toxicological profile of a Bt-resistant Brazilian strain (Sf_Des) in comparison to a Bt-susceptible strain (Sf_Bra).

Laboratory bioassays with 15 active substances of nine mode of action classes revealed that Sf_Des has a medium level of resistance to deltamethrin and chlorpyrifos. Very high cross-resistance was observed among Cry1 toxins, but high susceptibility against Vip3A. Strain Sf_Des exhibited - depending on the substrate - up to 19-fold increased cytochrome P450 activity in comparison to Sf_Bra. RNA-Seq data support a major role of P450 enzymes in the detoxification of insecticides because we detected 85 P450 transcripts upregulated in Sf_Des. Quantitative reverseented will help to guide recommendations for an efficient resistance management.
Mps one binder kinase activator 1 (MOB1) is a core component of the Hippo signaling pathway and has been implicated as a tumor suppressor. Here, we evaluated the possible relationship of MOB1 expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to prognosis.

We retrospectively analyzed 205 lung adenocarcinoma patients treated at Kyushu University Hospital between November 2007 and October 2012. MOB1 expression in tumor cells of surgical specimens was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Invasive activity of NSCLC cell lines in vitro was measured with a transwell assay.

Expression of MOB1 was classified as high in 105 of the 205 (51.2%) tumor specimens, and such high expression was significantly associated with poor disease-free survival (P = 0.0161). Among the various clinicopathologic parameters examined, high MOB1 expression was significantly associated only with intratumoral vascular invasion (P = 0.0005). Multivariate analysis also identified high MOB1 expression as a significant independent risk factor for disease-free survival (P = 0.0319). The invasiveness of H1299 cells in vitro was increased or attenuated by overexpression or knockdown of MOB1, respectively.

Our results suggest that MOB1 might promote early recurrence of NSCLC by increasing vascular invasion by tumor cells.

SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS OF THE STUDY We found that high MOB1 expression in surgical specimens of lung adenocarcinoma was associated with poor disease-free survival and with intratumoral vascular invasion. MOB1 expression also promoted the invasiveness of NSCLC cells in vitro.

This study was designed to determine whether intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) aimed at weight loss lowers cancer incidence and mortality.

Data from the Look AHEAD trial were examined to investigate whether participants randomized to ILI designed for weight loss would have reduced overall cancer incidence, obesity-related cancer incidence, and cancer mortality, as compared with the diabetes support and education (DSE) comparison group. This analysis included 4,859 participants without a cancer diagnosis at baseline except for nonmelanoma skin cancer.

After a median follow-up of 11 years, 684 participants (332 in ILI and 352 in DSE) were diagnosed with cancer. The incidence rates of obesity-related cancers were 6.1 and 7.3 per 1,000 person-years in ILI and DSE, respectively, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.84 (95% CI 0.68-1.04).
