The use of polar solvents MeCN or dimethylformamide (DMF) was previously shown to induce a selectivity switch in the Pd/P t Bu3-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of chloroaryl triflates. This phenomenon was attributed to the ability of polar solvents to stabilize anionic transition states for oxidative addition. However, we demonstrate that selectivity in this reaction does not trend with solvent dielectic constant. Unlike MeCN and DMF, water, alcohols, and several polar aprotic solvents such as MeNO2, acetone, and propylene carbonate provide the same selectivity as nonpolar solvents. These results indicate that the role of solvent on the selectivity of Suzuki-Miyaura couplings may be more complex than previously envisioned. Furthermore, this observation has the potential for synthetic value as it greatly broadens the scope of solvents that can be used for chloride-selective cross coupling of chloroaryl triflates. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to extraordinary changes in family literacy instruction, forcing face-to-face programmes to shift rapidly (or "on the fly") to online, remote instruction. This study is one of the few on online teaching and learning in family literacy and, to the knowledge of the authors, the first on emergency remote instruction in a family literacy programme during the COVID-19 pandemic. check details This article examines how the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy at The Pennsylvania State University in the United States has responded to the pandemic by converting its face-to-face family literacy classes into emergency remote instruction using online platforms. Serving eight immigrant families in 2019-2020 who live in the State College area in central Pennsylvania, the Family Pathways programme includes adult education, parent education and interactive parent-child literacy activities. The article discusses how teachers created online learning opportunities for parents and children to learn together, the strategies and resources instructors used to teach remotely, how challenges such as discomfort with technology were addressed, and what has been learned from the experience. Although COVID-19 presents unprecedented challenges for educators and learners in family literacy programmes more broadly, it has also compelled instructors in this particular programme to use remote instruction creatively and has revealed the critical importance of family literacy programmes as an educational support system for low-income and immigrant families.Clubfoot treatment using the Ponseti method has been severely impacted as a result of lockdown measures implemented by several countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. As clubfoot clinics begin phased re-opening, we describe various innovative techniques to protect patients and healthcare providers during delivery of clubfoot treatment services. In addition to standard social distancing measures and sanitization protocols, we report a simple and innovative technique of 'barrier casting' or 'ring-fencing' to potentially reduce the risk of droplet infection and airborne transmission during clubfoot casting and tenotomy. A transparent, disposable plastic drape is set up as a curtain and serves as an impermeable barrier between the caregiver and healthcare provider performing the casting or tenotomy. The plastic drape is cheap ( less then US$ 1.5), easily available and can be used effectively even in low- and middle-income countries which have a high patient load. We have utilized these innovative techniques in 43 consecutive patients since clinic re-opening and are satisfied that they are effective, economical and easily reproducible even in countries with limited resources. Innovative techniques, which have the potential to reduce the risk of disease transmission, will help in the rapid recovery of clubfoot treatment services as countries emerge from months of lockdown. The role of online intermediaries in allowing third parties to perform legal as well as illegal activities and the growing economic power of such intermediaries are profoundly challenging the legal framework established 20 years ago with the European Union e-Commerce Directive. European courts first, and legislatures more recently, have taken a position regarding the need for further regulation of online intermediaries. The new liability rules for copyright infringement are just an example of a more general tendency to charge intermediaries with responsibility. This tendency goes beyond the realm of intellectual property and includes consumer law, antitrust and competition law. The forthcoming EU Digital Services Act aims to revise the regulation of online intermediaries by means of new rules framing the responsibilities of digital services and online platforms' market behaviour. In this context there is no doubt that the current scenario requires modern rules. However, it is licit to ask whether and how European institutions are considering the collateral effects of the above-mentioned tendency. It is also not clear how the basic principles underpinning the e-Commerce Directive - and, in particular, freedom of expression - will be assured in a new legal framework where online intermediaries may not enjoy the safe harbours originally laid down in the e-Commerce Directive.Computational methods have become indispensable tools for efficient development and processing of new materials and have led to the new discipline of integrated computational materials engineering (ICME). The CALPHAD (calculation of phase diagrams) method has been identified as one of the pillars of ICME. The CALPHAD method, originally developed to model thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams, uses extrapolation methods for the functions of binary and ternary systems that enable the calculation of the properties of higher order systems. The CALPHAD functions are built to a large extent on available experimental data for these binary and ternary systems. To ensure reliability of the results from CALPHAD calculations, it is necessary to critically evaluate the experimental data that are being used for developing the CALPHAD functions. This review presents a brief overview of the CALPHAD method and its models, summarizes the data that are needed and the criteria that need to be applied for the evaluation of these data.
