Here, auditory sensitivity was measured before and after a traumatic blast in adult CBA/CaJ mice using auditory brainstem responses, distortion production otoacoustic emissions, and behavioral detection of pure tones. These measurements included baseline auditory sensitivity prior to injury in all mice, and again at 3, 30, and 90 days after the blast in the two physiological groups, and daily for up to 90 days in the behavioral group. Mice in all groups experienced an initial deterioration in auditory sensitivity, though physiological measurements showed evidence of recovery that behavioral measurements did not. Amplitudes and latencies of ABR waves may reflect additional changes beyond the peripheral damage shown by the threshold changes and should be explored further. The present work addresses a major gap in the current acoustic trauma literature both in terms of comparing physiological and behavioral methods, as well as measuring the time course of recovery.Anomalous trichromats have three classes of cone receptors but with smaller separation in the spectral sensitivities of their longer-wave (L or M) cones compared to normal trichromats. As a result, the differences in the responses of the longer-wave cones are smaller, resulting in a weaker input to opponent mechanisms that compare the LvsM responses. Despite this, previous studies have found that their color percepts are more similar to normal trichromats than the smaller LvsM differences predict, suggesting that post-receptoral processes might amplify their responses to compensate for the weaker opponent inputs. We evaluated the degree and form of compensation using a hue-scaling task, in which the appearance of different hues is described by the perceived proportions of red-green or blue-yellow primary colors. The scaling functions were modeled to estimate the relative salience of the red-green to blue-yellow components. The red-green amplitudes of the 10 anomalous observers were 1.5 times weaker than for a group of 26 normal controls. selleck products However, their relative sensitivity at threshold for detecting LvsM chromatic contrast was on average 6 times higher, consistent with a 4-fold gain in the suprathreshold hue-scaling responses. We discuss the implications of these results for understanding both the processes of compensation for a color deficiency and the limits of these processes.Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), collectively referred to as compulsive disorders, have typically not been included in structural research on the internalizing spectrum due to low prevalence in community samples. The current study examined the higher-order structure of anxiety, depressive and compulsive disorders among patients in a psychiatric partial hospital program (N = 2,178). We applied confirmatory factor analysis to diagnostic data obtained at admission and compared several competing models of the comorbidity structure. A one-factor model accounted well for the co-occurrence of all the disorders. A two-factor model comprised of fear and distress factors, wherein compulsive disorders loaded on fear, also fit the data well. However, a very large factor correlation (r = 0.86) suggested limited discriminant validity of fear and distress in the sample. Alternate models that featured a distinct compulsivity factor were not viable owing to large correlations between fear and compulsive disorders. Overall, our findings indicate that a broad internalizing dimensions underlies not only anxiety and depression, but also compulsive disorders, in an acute psychiatric population. Future studies using symptom-level data are needed to replicate these results and determine the structure of internalizing disorders from the bottom up, starting with narrowly defined symptom components.The mechanical and magnetic properties of Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy-Epoxy Resin (FSMA-ER) composite which is a new kind of functional composite material are investigated in this work. Based on the Mori-Tanaka method and equivalent inclusion theory of the micromechanics, a micromechanical constitutive model in the form of tensor for this new composite is established, which considers the interaction between different variants in FSMA, as well as the interaction between FSMA and epoxy resin. The mechanical and magnetic behavior of the FSMA-ER composite under complex loads can be well described by this model. Numerical results show that the FSMA-ER composite exhibits a good pseudoelastic property due to the reorientation of different variants in FSMA. Several other particular features of this new composite are also observed through the numerical results, which can content many special requirements in the actual applications. This research not only displays the particular mechanical and magnetic behavior of the FSMA-ER composite but also provides a base for the design of this kind of material.
