Furthermore, the transcriptome sequencing and RT-qPCR data also demonstrated that the toxicity of o-Al2O3 NPs is highly related to the damage of cell membrane and the imbalance of intracellular redox. Generally, our study has offered a comprehensive sight to the adverse effects of different surface modifications of Al2O3 NPs on environmental organisms and the possible underlying mechanisms.Lakes and lake sediments are significant components of the global carbon (C) cycle, and may store very large amounts of organic matter. Carbon sequestration in lakes is subject to substantial temporal and spatial variation and may be strongly affected by human activities. Here, we report accumulation rates (AR) of organic C (OC), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP), and investigate their responses to anthropogenic impact over the past 150 years by analyzing 62 sediment cores from 11 shallow lakes in the Songnen Plain, northeast China. From the center of each of the lakes, we selected one master core for age determination by 210Pb and 137Cs radioisotopes. The contents of OC, TN, TP, dry bulk density and mass specific magnetic susceptibility were then determined for all cores. The regional OCAR, TNAR and TPAR up-scaling from the multiple cores yielded mean values of 51.63 ± 15.13, 2.50 ± 0.98, and 0.90 ± 0.21 g m-2 yr-1, respectively. Nutrient AR in the studied lakes increased by a factor of approximately 2 × from the middle 19th century to the 1950s, and approximately 5 × after the 1950s. Elemental ratios show that the increase in OCAR is mainly the result of C autogenesis from the growth of aquatic plants stimulated by agricultural intensification, including increased chemical fertilizer application and farmland expansion. Significantly enhanced nutrient burial by these lakes after the 1950s resulted from increased anthropogenic impacts in northeast China. More sustainable agricultural practises, including a decrease in P fertilizer use, would result in a lowering of OCAR, TNAR and TPAR in the future. The effect of land application of sewage sludge on soil microbial communities and the possible spread of antibiotic- and metal-resistant strains and resistance determinants were evaluated during a 720-day field experiment. Enzyme activities, the number of oligotrophic bacteria, the total number of bacteria (qPCR), functional diversity (BIOLOG) and genetic diversity (DGGE) were established. Antibiotic and metal resistance genes (ARGs, MRGs) were assessed, and the number of cultivable antibiotic- (ampicillin, tetracycline) and heavy metal- (Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni) resistant bacteria were monitored during the experiment. The application of 10 t ha-1 of sewage sludge to soil did not increase the organic matter content and caused only a temporary increase in the number of bacteria, as well as in the functional and structural biodiversity. In contrast to expectations, a general adverse effect on the tested microbial parameters was observed in the fertilized soil. The field experiment revealed a significant reduction in the activities of alkaline and acid phosphatases, urease and nitrification potential. Although sewage sludge was identified as the source of several ARGs and MRGs, these genes were not detected in the fertilized soil. BAY-1816032 solubility dmso The obtained results indicate that the effect of fertilization based on the recommended dose of sewage sludge was not achieved.Microplastics pollution is a serious ecological threat, severely affecting environments and human health. Tackling microplastics pollution requires an effective methodology to detect minute polymer particles in environmental samples and organisms. Here were report a novel methodology to visualise and identify nanoscale (down to 100 nm) and microscale synthetic commercially-available uniform spherical polymer particles using dark-field hyperspectral microscopy in visible-near infrared (400-1000 nm) wavelength range. Polystyrene particles with diameters between 100 nm-1 μm, polymethacrylate 1 μm and melamine formaldehyde 2 μm microspheres suspended in pure water samples were effectively imaged and chemically identified based on spectral signatures and image-assisted analysis. We succeeded in visualisation and spectral identification of pure and mixed nano- and microplastics in vivo employing optically-transparent Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes as a model to demonstrate the ingestion and tissue distribution of microplastics. As we demonstrate here, dark-field hyperspectral microscopy is capable for differentiating between chemically-different microplastics confined within live invertebrate intestines. Moreover, this optical technology allows for quantitative identification of microplastics ingested by nematodes. We believe that this label-free non-destructive methodology will find numerous applications in environmental nano- and microplastics detection and quantification, investigation of their biodistribution in tissues and organs and nanotoxicology.Cryphonectria nitschkei chrysovirus 1 (CnCV1), was described earlier from an ascomycetous fungus, Cryphonectria nitschkei strain OB5/11, collected in Japan; its partial sequence was reported a decade ago. Complete sequencing of the four genomic dsRNA segments revealed molecular features similar to but distinct from previously reported members of the family Chrysoviridae. Unique features include the presence of a mini-cistron preceding the major large open reading frame in each genomic segment. Common features include the presence of CAA repeats in the 5'-untranslated regions and conserved terminal sequences. CnCV1-OB5/11 could be laterally transferred to C. nitschkei and its relatives C. radicalis and C. naterciae via coculturing, virion transfection and protoplast fusion, but not to fungal species other than the three species mentioned above, even within the genus Cryphonectria, suggesting a very narrow host range. Phenotypic comparison of a few sets of CnCV1-infected and -free isogenic strains showed symptomless infection in new hosts.
We assessed the curative effect of a second curettage in patients with persistent hCG serum levels after first curettage for a gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD).

This prospective observational study used the data of the Belgian register for GTD between July 2012 and January 2017. We analysed the data of patients who underwent a second curettage. We included 313 patients in the database. Primary endpoints were need for second curettage and chemotherapy.

Thirty-seven patients of the study population (12 %) underwent a second curettage. 20 had persistent human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) elevation before second curettage. Of them, 9 patients (45 %) needed no further treatment afterwards. Eleven patients (55 %) needed further chemotherapy. Nine (82 %) were cured with single-agent chemotherapy and 2 patients (18 %) needed multi-agent chemotherapy. Of the 37 patients, patients with hCG levels below 5000 IU/L undergoing a second curettage were cured without chemotherapy in 65 % versus 45 % of patients with hCG level more than 5000 IU/L.
