Research Designs within Medical Investigation.
Benign adult familial myoclonus epilepsy (BAFME) is one of the diseases that cause cortical myoclonus (CM) with giant somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). There are no useful diagnostic biomarkers differentiating BAFME from other CM diseases.

To establish reliable biomarkers including high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) with giant SEPs for the diagnosis of BAFME.

This retrospective case study included 49 consecutive CM patients (16 BAFME and 33 other CM patients) who exhibited giant P25 or N35 SEPs. SEPs were processed by a band-pass filter of 400-1000 Hz to analyze HFOs. Clinical and SEP findings were compared between (1) BAFME and other CM groups and (2) patients with presence and absence of P25-HFOs (HFOs superimposed on giant P25). The diagnostic power of each factor for BAFME was calculated.

All 16 BAFME patients showed SEP P25-HFOs with significantly higher occurrence (P < 0.0001) compared with that of other CM groups. The presence of P25-HFOs significantly correlated with a BAFME diagnosis (P < 0.0001) and high SEP P25 and N35 amplitudes (P=0.01 and P < 0.0001, respectively). BAFME was reliably diagnosed using P25-HFOs with high sensitivity (100%), specificity (87.9%), positive predictive value (80%), and negative predictive value (100%), demonstrating its superiority as a diagnostic factor compared to other factors.

P25-HFOs with giant SEPs is a potential biomarker for BAFME diagnosis. P25-HFOs may reflect cortical hyperexcitability partly due to paroxysmal depolarizing shifts in epileptic neuronal activities and higher degrees of rhythmic tremulousness than those in ordinary CM. © 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Among them, black phosphorus (BP) is one of the most promising materials on account of its thickness-dependent bandgap, high charge-carrier mobility, in-plane anisotropic structure, and excellent biocompatibility, as well as the broad applications brought by the properties. In view of the electron configuration, the most unique feature of BP is the lone-pair electrons on each P atom. The lone-pair electrons inevitably cause high reactivity of BP, particularly toward water/oxygen, which greatly limits the practical application of BP under ambient conditions. The other side of the coin is that BP can serve as an electron donor to promote the construction of BP-based hybrid materials and/or to boost the performance of BP or BP-based hybrid materials in applications. Here, recent advances in passivation and application of BP by addressing the interaction between the lone-pair electrons of BP and the other materials are discussed, and prospects for future research on BP are also proposed.A novel series of quinoline-based symmetrical and unsymmetrical bis-chalcones was synthesized via a Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction between 3-formyl-quinoline/quinolone derivatives with acetone or arylidene acetones, respectively, by using KOH/MeOH/H2 O as a reaction medium. Twelve of the obtained compounds were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against 60 different human cancer cell lines according to the National Cancer Institute protocol. Among the screened compounds, the symmetrical N-butyl bis-quinolinyl-chalcone 14g and the unsymmetrical quinolinyl-bis-chalcone 17o bearing a 7-chloro-substitution on the N-benzylquinoline moiety and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy substituent on the phenyl ring, respectively, exhibited the highest overall cytotoxicity against the evaluated cell lines with a GI50 range of 0.16-5.45 µM, with HCT-116 (GI50  = 0.16) and HT29 (GI50  = 0.42 μM) (colon cancer) representing best-case scenarios. Notably, several GI50 values for these compounds were lower than those of the reference drugs doxorubicin and 5-FU. Docking studies performed on selected derivatives yielded very good binding energies in the active site of proteins that participate in key carcinogenic pathways.Early signalling events in response to elicitation include reversible protein phosphorylation and re-localization of plasma membrane (PM) proteins. Oligogalacturonides (OGs) are a class of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that act as endogenous signals to activate the plant immune response. Previous data on early phosphoproteome changes in Arabidopsis thaliana upon OG perception uncovered the immune-related phospho-regulation of several membrane proteins, among which PCaP1, a PM-anchored protein with actin filament-severing activity, was chosen for its potential involvement in OG- and flagellin-triggered responses. Here, we demonstrate that PCaP1 is required for late, but not early, responses induced by OGs and flagellin. Moreover, pcap1 mutants, unlike the wild type, are impaired in the recovery of full responsiveness to a second treatment with OGs performed 24 h after the first one. Localization studies on PCaP1 upon OG treatment in plants expressing a functional PCaP1-GFP fusion under the control of PCaP1 promoter revealed fluorescence on the PM, organized in densely packed punctate structures, previously reported as microdomains. Fluorescence was found to be associated also with endocytic vesicles, the number of which rapidly increased after OG treatment, suggesting both an endocytic turnover of PCaP1 for maintaining its homeostasis at the PM and an OG-induced endocytosis.Plant sprout foods exhibit a lot of biological activities including anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anticancer, antidiabetes, anti-infection, and antiviral activities. Up to the present moment, plant sprout foods have received much attention due to their abundance, good bioavailability, and health benefits for human. 4Octyl This review highlights the biological activities of different plant sprout foods (viz., broccoli sprout, buckwheat sprout, wheat sprout, mung bean sprout, soybean sprout, and adkuzi bean sprout) using in vitro model, animal model, and human model. Furthermore, the bioavailability of plant sprout foods is also discussed. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS A review of the literature was conducted to biological activities of plant sprout foods, in addition to a summary of health benefits and bioavailability of sprout foods. Several biological activities of plant sprout foods with in vitro and in vivo evidence are currently unexplored in clinical trials, because the effects of sprout foods on human tissues and cells measured by tube test do not recapitulate the actual in vivo effects.
