Soil and groundwater contamination with lead (Pb) poses serious challenges for the environment. Activated carbon (AC) and biochar have huge potential application in the in-situ remediation processes through permeable reactive barriers (PRB). Spectral induced polarization (SIP) technique recently showed promises in nondestructively monitoring the spatio-temporal characteristics of physical, chemical and biological processes in porous media. In this study SIP technique was used for monitoring Pb remediation by AC and biochar in column scale. The calculated characteristic grain/pore size evolutions from SIP signals on AC, agreed well with the size of precipitates measured by SEM and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) methods. The content increment process of the retained Pb on AC was also recorded via the magnitude increment of the imaginary conductivity. The mechanisms of Pb-AC and Pb-biochar interactions were investigated using SEM-EDS, TEM, FTIR, XRD, and XPS measurements. It showed that AC immobilizes through physical adsorption and precipitation, whereas complexation with functional groups is the remediation mechanism for biochar. Furthermore, the observed SIP responses of both AC and biochar are two orders of magnitude higher than those of typical natural soils or silica materials. see more This distinct difference is an additional advantage for the field application of SIP technique in PRB scenarios. In recent years, waste mobile phones have become popular as electronic waste due to the huge amount, serious pollution with improper disposal and high resource value. It is imperative to realize the recycling of resources in waste mobile phones. The application of emulsion liquid membrane in the recovery of gold and synthesis of nanomaterials from waste mobile phone printed circuit boards (WMPCBs) was studied. The components of the emulsion liquid membrane, effects of 7 factors on the extraction rate and the morphology of the synthesized nanomaterials were explored. The results show that it is possible to extract 99.79% of Au(III) from WMPCBs leachate with kerosene as diluent, Span80 as surfactant, methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK) as carrier, ascorbic acid solution as stripping agent and liquid paraffin as membrane stabilizer. The external phase pH and the internal phase concentration had a greater influence on the extraction efficiency of Au(III) among 7 factors. The morphology of the synthesized product was affected by the concentration and type of the surfactant. It provides a new idea to connect recovery from waste with deep processing, extending the waste mobile phone recycling process chain and achieving high-value utilization of waste mobile phone secondary metal resource products. The up-to-date city-level mercury emission inventory is essential for effective mitigation policy designs due to rapid changes in energy consumption and industrial structures in Chinese cities. This study updated the atmospheric mercury emission inventory in 2015 based on the most recent information on plant-specific air pollution control devices (APCDs) and coal consumption for 45 sectors in 215 Chinese cities. Total emissions were estimated at 218 t with an uncertainty range of - 54.0% to 147%, to which coal-fired industrial boilers (CFIBs) contributed 58.1%, followed by coal-fired power plants (CFPPs, 32.7%). Mercury emissions varied significantly among cities, ranging from 0.0218 to 6.89 t. The Logistics Mean Division Index (LMDI) model was then applied to identify key factors driving mercury emission changes in 50 representative cities from 2010 to 2015. Although coal consumption increased by nearly one fifth across the 50 cities, their total emissions declined by 2.36%, largely due to energy structure adjustments and widespread installations of more efficient APCDs. However, key drivers of mercury mitigation differed widely between the cities, being driven by energy intensity improvements in Chongqing and Guangzhou (Guangdong province) and by energy structure adjustments in Wuhan (Hubei province) and Yinchuan (Ningxia province). Mitigation strategies should be tailored to reflect these differences. The discovery of granular adsorbents for the capture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from humid air and rapid regeneration at low temperature is still a challenge. Here we reported formation of a granular Al-based metal organic gel, CAU-3-NH2(gel), by adjusting heating up time in the synthesis procedure. The water and thermal stable xerogel shows high surface area (1964 m2/g) and adsorption capacity for VOCs (uptakes of toluene and hexanal reach 4.5 and 3.85 mmol/g at P/P0 = 0.1, respectively). Dynamic adsorption experiments further conformed its outstanding adsorption performance for toluene under 50% RH, higher than that of commercial adsorbents and widely studied MOFs including BPL activated carbon, ZSM-5, zeolite 13X, XAD-16, MIL-101(Cr), CAU-1 and ZIF-8. Under the mass space velocity of 12,000 mL/g.h, CAU-3-NH2(gel) kept 99.95% removal ratio of low concentration toluene (100 ppm) over 12 h in 3 cycles at 298 K. Furthermore, desorption experiments show its excellent regenerability under mild temperature (328 K and 358 K). The interaction of toluene-framework and adsorption process are investigated by using Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations.
A primary goal for dementia research is to understand how to best support people to live well with dementia. Among cognitively healthy older individuals, more positive attitudes toward their own aging (ATOA) and/or feeling younger than their chronological age (i.e. having a younger subjective age SA) are associated with better quality of life (QoL), satisfaction with life (SwL), and well-being (which are indicators of capability to live well), and fewer depressive symptoms. We tested whether people with dementia (PwD) with more positive ATOA and/or with a younger SA report better QoL, SwL, and well-being, and are less likely to experience depression.

We used cross-sectional data from the IDEAL cohort baseline assessment (conducted between 2014 and 2016), comprising 1541 PwD residing in Great Britain [mean (range) age= 76.3 (43 to 98); 43.6% women].

More positive ATOA was associated with better QoL, SwL, well-being, and less likelihood of depression. Younger SA was associated with better QoL, SwL, well-being, and less likelihood of depression.
