با فاصله‌ای حدود ۳۵۰ کیلومتر از نیویورک و ۲۱۵ کیلومتر از مونترال، بوستون نقطه‌ای مهم برای ارتباطات اقتصادی و فرهنگی در شمال شرق آمریکا محسوب می‌شود. همچنین، این شهر دارای یکی از کارآمدترین سیستم‌های حمل‌ونقل عمومی در آمریکا است که توسط سازمان MBTA اداره می‌شود و شامل مترو، اتوبوس، و خطوط قطار می‌شود.
موقعیت بوستون نه‌تنها از لحاظ جغرافیایی بلکه از نظر فرهنگی و اقتصادی، آن را به مرکزی برجسته در ایالات متحده تبدیل کرده است.
