Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection describes how species that are better equipped to adapt biologically to a changing environments over time, and those that don't become extinct. This process of biological evolution is what science is all about.
What is Evolution?
The term "evolution" can have many nonscientific meanings. For instance "progress" or "descent with modification." Scientifically, it is a term used to describe a changes in the traits of living organisms (or species) over time. In biological terms the change is due to natural selection and genetic drift.
Evolution is one of the fundamental tenets of modern biology. It is a concept that has been tested and verified by a myriad of scientific tests. Evolution doesn't deal with the existence of God or religious beliefs in the same way as other scientific theories such as the Copernican or germ theory of diseases.
Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that certain physical characteristics were predetermined to evolve in a step-like fashion over time. This was called the "Ladder of Nature" or scala Naturae. Charles Lyell used the term to describe this idea in his Principles of Geology, first published in 1833.
Darwin presented his theory of evolution in his book On the Origin of Species published in the early 1800s. It states that all species of organisms share common ancestors that can be traced through fossils and other evidence. This is the modern view on evolution, and is supported by a variety of disciplines, including molecular biology.
While scientists don't know the exact mechanism by which organisms evolved however they are sure that the evolution of life on earth is a result of natural selection and genetic drift. People with advantages are more likely than others to live and reproduce. These individuals then pass their genes to the next generation. Over time the gene pool gradually changes and evolves into new species.
Some scientists also employ the term evolution to refer to large-scale evolutionary changes such as the creation of a new species from an ancestral species. Other scientists, such as population geneticists, define it more broadly by referring an overall variation in the frequency of alleles over generations. Both definitions are correct and palatable, but certain scientists argue that allele frequency definitions omit important features of evolutionary process.
Origins of Life
The development of life is an essential step in evolution. The emergence of life happens when living systems start to develop at a micro scale, for instance within cells.
The origins of life are an issue in a variety of disciplines, including geology, chemistry, biology and chemistry. The question of how living things started is a major topic in science since it poses an important challenge to the theory of evolution. It is sometimes referred to as "the mystery" of life or "abiogenesis."

These chemical reactions are often compared to the chicken-and-egg dilemma of how life first appeared in the first place. The development of DNA/RNA as well as protein-based cell machinery is essential to the birth of life, but without the appearance of life, the chemical process that allows it isn't working.

Evolutionary Changes
Today, the word evolution is used to describe the general changes in genetic traits over time. These changes can result from adaptation to environmental pressures as described in the entry on Darwinism (see the entry on Charles Darwin for background) or may result from natural selection.
This is a method that increases the frequency of those genes in a species which confer an advantage in survival over others and causes an ongoing change in the appearance of a group. The specific mechanisms responsible for these evolutionary changes include mutation and reshuffling of genes in sexual reproduction, and also gene flow between populations.
Natural selection is the process that makes beneficial mutations more common. All organisms undergo mutations and reshuffles of genes. As mentioned above, those with the beneficial characteristic have a higher reproduction rate than those that do not. Over the course of many generations, this difference in the numbers of offspring produced can result in a gradual shift in the average number of advantageous traits in a population.
This can be seen in the evolution of various beak shapes on finches from the Galapagos Islands. They have developed these beaks so that they can eat more easily in their new habitat. These changes in form and shape can aid in the creation of new organisms.
Most of the changes that occur are the result of one mutation, but occasionally several will happen at the same time. Most of these changes can be neutral or even harmful, but a small number could have a positive impact on the survival of the species and reproduce and increase their frequency as time passes. Natural selection is a process that causes the accumulating changes over time that lead to a new species.

They include language, a large brain, the capacity to construct and use sophisticated tools, and a cultural diversity.
Evolution occurs when genetic changes allow members of the group to better adapt to their environment. This adaptation is driven by natural selection, a process whereby certain traits are favored over other traits. The more adaptable are more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation. This is how all species evolve and is the basis of the theory of evolution.
Scientists refer to this as the "law of natural selection." The law states that species that share an ancestor will tend to develop similar characteristics as time passes. This is because these traits make it easier to reproduce and survive within their environment.
All organisms have a DNA molecule that is the source of information that helps guide their growth and development. The DNA molecule is composed of base pairs that are spirally arranged around sugar molecules and phosphate molecules. The sequence of bases in each strand determines the phenotype, the distinctive appearance and behavior of an individual. Variations in a population are caused by mutations and reshufflings of genetic material (known collectively as alleles).
Fossils of the first human species, Homo erectus and Homo neanderthalensis, have been found in Africa, Asia, and Europe. While there are some differences between them the fossils all support the hypothesis that modern humans first appeared in Africa. Genetic and fossil evidence also suggest that early humans migrated from Africa into Asia and then Europe.
