This study used selective electrical stimulation of each of the 5 vestibular sensors (the horizontal (HC), anterior (AC) and posterior (PC) semi-circular canals, and the utricle and saccule) in the rat and recorded local field potentials (LFPs) across the hippocampus, using a 16 electrode microarray. We found that stimulation of any vestibular sensor in the left labyrinth evoked triphasic LFPs in both hippocampi, although it was clear that, in general, the amplitudes were greater for the right, contralateral side. This was particularly true for Phase 1 for the HC, AC, utricle and saccule, Phase 2 for the HC, PC, utricle and saccule, and Phase 3 for the AC, PC and saccule. Overall, our results suggest that vestibular input to the hippocampus is bilateral, preferentially contralateral, but highly stratified in that stimulation of the same vestibular sensor results in activation of different specific areas of the hippocampus, with different LFP amplitudes and latencies. This suggests the possibility that different regions of the hippocampus use different kinds of vestibular information for different purposes and that there may be a high degree of redundancy in the representation of vestibular input, perhaps ensuring that the hippocampus is more robust to the partial loss of vestibular information.Essential tremor (ET) is a common clinical syndrome characterized by action tremors affecting both upper limbs that can compromise manual tasks' execution and impair functional and social performance. The primary pharmacological treatment is symptomatic, but effective medicines are somewhat limited. There is a clear need to find new effective therapies for the treatment of ET. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a modulator of CB1 receptor and CB1 agonists can reduce tremors in experimental models. We hypothesized that a single acute CBD intake would reduce tremors in ET patients. We performed a randomized, controlled, double-blind, crossover study on 19 patients with ET. They were 10 males and 9 females, had mean 63 years of age, and mean 23 years of disease duration and had insufficient control of their tremors with the usual pharmacological treatment. They ingested a single oral dose of CBD (300 mg) or placebo in two experimental sessions performed 2-weeks apart. Patients were evaluated immediately before and after oral ingestion (60 min and 210 min), using the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin clinical scale. There was no carryover effect. There were no significant differences in upper limb tremors score, specific motor task tremor scores (writing and drawing/pouring) or clinical impression of change after treatment with placebo or CBD. Parkinson disease (PD) has been associated with both weight loss and gain in different stages of the disease. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence and associations with weight change over two years based on 3% and 5% weight change.

In this longitudinal analysis, weight at baseline and follow-up was used to classify patients into groups of weight loss, stable, and weight gain. Differences between these groups at baseline and then with change over time were tested.

The sample was 668 patients with mean(SD) age 66.1(10) and disease duration 5.3(5.4) years. Using 3% weight change criteria 32.6% lost, 23.1% gained, and 55.7% had stable weight. Using 5% criteria 22.6% lost, 15.7% gained, and 61.7% had stable weight. Age was associated with both 3% and 5% change in weight. Other associations with 5% weight change were disease duration, Total and Motor Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, Older Americans Resource and Services disability, and Hoehn & Yahr staging. The effects of 3% weight loss on Motor UPDRS, IADLs, and depression, and the effects of 5% weight loss on IADLs remained statistically significant when controlling for baseline differences in age, levodopa use, and Total UPDRS.

PD patients are more likely to experience 3% than 5% weight change and this lower threshold of weight change was associated with greater disease severity and disability over time. Attention to more subtle weight change may help identify those at greater risk of disability.

Recently discovered alternative mediated IET (MIET) or direct IET (DIET) offer exciting alternative mechanisms of microbial partnerships that could lead to new strategies for the improvement of biotechnologies. Here, we analyze mathematical modeling of DIET and MIET in anaerobic ecosystems. Bioenergetics approaches already enable the evaluation of different energy sharing scenarios between microorganisms and give interesting clues on redox mediators and on possible ways of driving microbial communities relying on IET. The modeling of DIET kinetics however is currently only in its infancy. Recent concepts introduced for the modeling of electroactive biofilms should be further exploited. Recent modeling examples confirms the potential of DIET to increase the IET rates compared to H2-MIET, but also point out the need for additional characterizations of biological components supporting IET to improve predictions.
