The recruitment of monocytes to the brain plays an important role in the development of depression. However, the association between plasma biomarkers of monocyte trafficking and depression is unclear. This study is aimed to examine the effects of plasma monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) on the risk of depression.

Data were acquired from an ongoing prospective cohort study involving randomly sampled, community-dwelling Korean older adults, which has been followed every two years. We included 1,539 euthymic older adults (age = 68.2 [5.6] years; 51.7% were women) without a history of major psychiatric disorders, and dementia and neurological diseases. Geriatric psychiatrists diagnosed incident depression through a structured interview using the Korean version of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview.

Depression had developed in 134 (8.7 %) participants during the follow-up period of 5.7 (0.8) years. The high plasma MCP-1 tertile group showed two-fold higher risk of depression than the low plasma MCP-1 tertile group (hazards ratio [HR] = 2.00, 95% confidence intervals [CI] = 1.27 - 3.13, p = 0.003). The association between high levels of plasma MCP-1 and future risk of depression was significant in the middle plasma ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 tertile groups; the high plasma MCP-1 tertile group showed about four-fold higher risk of depression than the low plasma MCP-1 tertile group.

Molecules involved in monocyte trafficking may be good candidates as diagnostic biomarkers and/or therapeutic targets for late life depression.

This model places goals at its center, and then proceeds from motivational processes of goal setting, pursuit, and disengagement, to contextual factors (cultural, social, technological, physical, organizational, and life-history related aspects) that provide opportunities and constraints to the healthy aging of individuals. We briefly introduce each of these constructs and processes, thereby setting the scene for the articles included in this supplement that each address one or more of the facets of the heuristic model of motivation and healthy aging.Understanding whether pollinator behaviors and species richness drive crop yields is a key area of investigation in pollination ecology. Using sunflower as a study species we describe variation in mean floral visitation times among bee taxa and test how interactions between bee richness and the proportion of bumblebees in localized communities impact seed yield. Seven bee genera commonly visited sunflower including Agapostemon, Bombus, Halictus, Lasioglossum, Megachile, Melissodes, and Svastra. Mean visitation times to sunflower varied across genera and Bombus and Halictus spp. spent the most time foraging on inflorescences, but the number of visits by Bombus spp. H 89 datasheet was the only parameter associated with increased yields. Experimental pollination deficit reduced seed development and yields, and these effects were stronger in stands of wild-type sunflower in the field compared to a confection variety grown in the greenhouse. Relationships between bee richness and pollination services differed for potted and wild sunflower when bees had short-term access to potted sunflower, bee richness and relative Bombus abundances were not associated with pollination quotients. When bees had long-term access to wild sunflower, relative Bombus abundances predicted pollination services but were modified by site-level bee richness as richness increased, the effects of Bombus abundance decreased. Our studies demonstrate that bee species richness is not always a clear predictor of pollination services; instead, our results underscore the importance of specific taxa when species richness is low (here, bumblebees), and show that the effects of bee functional groups important for pollination may be modified by changes in site-level species richness.Sow mortality, as the result of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), has been increasing the last decade in the U.S. swine industry. The objective of this study was to identify potential biological markers associated with risk of POP in sows. We hypothesized that sows differing in perineal score (PS) from PS1-PS3 (PS1 - a presumed low POP risk; PS2 - a presumed moderate POP risk; and PS3 - a presumed high POP risk) would differ in circulatory biomarkers of inflammation and hormonal profiles. On gestation week 15, 2,864 individual sows were assigned a PS, and subsequently, 1.0, 2.7, and 23.4% of PS1, PS2, or PS3 sows, respectively, experienced POP. During PS assignment at days 107-116 of gestation, blood samples were collected from sows on two farms of similar genetics, feed sources, and health status. Whole blood was subjected to complete blood count (CBC) analysis (n = 212) and steroid hormones were measured in serum from a subset (n = 110) of animals assigned PS3 parity matched to PS1. Lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), haptoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and creatine kinase (CK) levels were also evaluated. Complete blood count analysis revealed decreased (P ≤ 0.05) mean platelet values (3.9%), lymphocytes (6.5%), and monocytes (7.5%) in PS3 compared to PS1 sows. Increased (P ≤ 0.02) abundance of androstenedione (13.4%), androsterone (18.2%), estrone (24.8%), and 17β-estradiol (26.2%), was observed in PS3 compared to PS1 sows. Additionally, a 25.8% increase (P = 0.04) in LBP in PS3 compared to PS1 sows was observed. Many dynamic physiological changes occur in sows during late gestation as they approach farrowing. The data presented herein demonstrate distinct differences in concentrations of circulating metabolites exists between late gestation sows at high or low risk for POP and may serve useful understanding the etiology of POP and evaluation of mitigation strategies.
