Quality of life was measured in 81 children using the paediatric version of the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). We compared phenotypes of the pectoralis muscle and the ventricle of the heart from ruddy shelduck and common shelduck (a closely related low-altitude congener) that were raised in common conditions at sea level, predicting that oxidative capacity would be greater in ruddy shelduck to support high-altitude migration. Fibre-type composition of the pectoralis and the maximal activity of eight enzymes involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism in the pectoralis and heart, were compared between species. Few differences distinguished ruddy shelduck from common shelduck in the flight muscle, with the exception that ruddy shelduck had higher activities of complex II and higher ratios of complex IV (cytochrome c oxidase) and complex II when expressed relative to citrate synthase activity. There were no species differences in fibre-type composition, so these changes in enzyme activity may reflect an evolved modification in the functional properties of muscle mitochondria, potentially influencing mitochondrial respiratory capacity and/or oxygen affinity. Ruddy shelduck also had higher lactate dehydrogenase activity concurrent with lower pyruvate kinase and hexokinase activity in the left ventricle, which likely reflects an increased capacity for lactate oxidation by the heart. We conclude that changes in pathways of mitochondrial energy metabolism in the muscle and heart may contribute to the ability of ruddy shelduck to fly at high altitude.
In adult patients with primary or recurrent coarctation of the aorta (CoA), extra-anatomic bypass grafting (EABG) has been widely used as a surgical treatment option. However, there have been few reports on pseudoaneurysms (PAs) of the distal anastomotic sites after extra-anatomic bypass for CoA.

A 51-year-old man with hemoptysis was transferred to our hospital. Twenty years ago, he had undergone EABG from the ascending to the descending aorta (ascending-to-descending EABG) for CoA with right aortic arch. Eight years ago, he underwent thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for the ruptured PA on the distal anastomotic site of the EABG. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scans revealed recurrent ruptured PA on the distal anastomotic site of the EABG. Therefore, we decided to replace the descending aorta, followed by end-to-side anastomosis of the EABG to the replaced descending aorta. However, due to massive adhesion of the lung to the EABG and PA, we performed transection of the descending aorta to decompress the PA. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient is doing well 5months after surgery.

Pediatric renal tumors account for 7% of new cancer diagnoses in children. Here, we will review results from recently completed clinical trials informing the current standard of care and discuss targeted and immune therapies being explored for the treatment of high risk or relapsed/refractory pediatric renal malignancies.

Cooperative group trials have continued to make improvements in the care of children with pediatric tumors. In particular, trials that standardize treatment of rare cancers (e.g., bilateral Wilms tumor) have improved outcomes significantly. We have seen improvements in event free and overall survival in recently completed clinical trials for many pediatric renal tumors. Still, there are subsets of rarer cancers where outcomes remain poor and new therapeutic strategies are needed. Future trials aim to balance treatment toxicity with treatment efficacy for those with excellent outcomes while identifying novel therapeutics for those with poor outcomes.

However, studies are controversial and scarce for mixed populations.
To analyze the association of 25(OH)D with bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD); and to investigate the presence of interaction with skin color in Brazilian adults.

This is a cross-sectional, population-based study conducted with adult individuals (20-59 years) of both genders. Bone health was assessed by dual energy radiological absortometry. Vitamin D status was measured using serum 25(OH)D. Skin color and other variables in the adjusted model were collected using a questionnaire and anthropometric assessment. Associations and interactions were evaluated using linear regression models stratified according to gender.

Non-white men with vitamin D deficiency (< 20.0 ng/mL) have less bone mass than those with insufficiency and sufficiency for the femoral neck and hip sites.
