Drought has a substantial socioeconomic impact under the changing climate. The estimation of population exposure to drought could be the pivotal signal to predict future water scarcity in the climate hotspot of South Asia. This study examines the changing population exposure to drought across South Asia using 20 climate model ensembles from the latest CMIP6 and demographic data under shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). Underpinning the latest version of the IPCC 6th Assessment Report (AR6), this paper focuses on the 2021-2040 (near-term), 2041-2060 (mid-term), and 2081-2100 (long-term) periods to project population exposure changes relative to the reference period (1995-2014) under four SSP-RCP scenarios. Drought events are detected by adopting the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and run theory method. Model validation suggests that CMIP6-GCM performs well in projecting climate variables and capturing drought events. The results show that the projected increases in frequent droughenario-combinations into consideration for policymaking in regard to water management as well as migration planning over South Asia.Kandelia obovata is a dominant mangrove species in southeastern of China. This species has a high tolerance to heavy metal stress that is mainly ascribed to the thickening of the secondary exodermis and high activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes in the roots. The thickened exodermis inhibits entry of heavy metals into the roots, and oxidative stress due to Cd can be reduced efficiently by SOD activity. Although there are several proposed mechanisms by which genes encoding SODs in K. obovata (KoSODs) could induce lignification that contributes to thickening of the root exodermis, the exact functions of FeSOD2 (KoFSD2) and Cu/ZnSOD3 (KoCSD3) remain unclear. In this study we investigated the role of a thickened exodermis in K. obovata root tissues in response to Cd treatment, and determined functions of KoFSD2 and KoCSD3 by performing comparative transcriptome analysis on tobacco lines that overexpress these two enzymes. WAY316606 we found that a thickened exodermis can reduce Cd uptake, and that exposure to high concentrations Cd can promote secondary thickening processes in K. obovata roots exodermis. Transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana overexpressing of KoFSD2 or KoCSD3 exhibit different responses to Cd stress. KoCSD3 can promote thickening of the secondary cell wall of root vascular tissues to impede Cd entry. Meanwhile, KoFSD2 and KoCSD3 can also regulate translocation of copper and iron in response to Cd accumulation. Taken together, our results expand our understanding of the physiological roles of SODs in K. obovata against Cd stress. The adsorption of ofloxacin (OFL) on oxidized activated carbon (AC) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are compared, focusing on the differences in carbon structures. Chemical oxidation of carbonaceous materials inhibited OFL adsorption to AC, but enhanced their adsorption to CNT. The higher number of oxygen-containing functional groups facilitated the interaction of the material with water molecules, causing the blockage of AC inner pore. However, the dispersion of oxidized CNT enhanced due to its increased hydrophilicity, resulting in the exposure of some new adsorption sites, as identified by the 1H NMR relaxometry measurement. The adsorption kinetics of OFL on AC indicated that the contributions of slow adsorption and equilibrium time increased after AC oxidation. However, the equilibrium time of the fast adsorption of OFL on CNT shortened after CNT oxidation. These results indicated that the pore of AC was blocked by water cluster and the accessibility of adsorption sites on oxidized CNT was enhanced due to dispersion. This study emphasizes that the structural differences among carbonaceous materials control the oxidation effects on their adsorption characteristics for OFL.Environmental stressors are assessed through methods that quantify their impacts on a wide range of metrics including species density, growth rates, reproduction, behaviour and physiology, as on host-pathogen interactions and immunocompetence. Environmental stress may induce additional sublethal effects, like mutations and epigenetic signatures affecting offspring via germline mediated transgenerational inheritance, shaping phenotypic plasticity, increasing disease susceptibility, tissue pathologies, changes in social behaviour and biological invasions. The growing diversity of pollutants released into aquatic environments requires the development of a reliable, standardised and 3R (replacement, reduction and refinement of animals in research) compliant in vitro toolbox. The tools have to be in line with REACH regulation 1907/2006/EC, aiming to improve strategies for potential ecotoxicological risks assessment and monitoring of chemicals threatening human health and aquatic environments. Aquatic invertebratesdescribe the benefits of aquatic invertebrate ASC-based tools for better addressing ecotoxicological questions, along with the current obstacles and possible overhaul approaches.Biochars have been used to reduce gas emissions from manure composting practices and to recover nutrients from wastewater because of their effective sorption capacity. However, relatively less is known about the impacts of different alkaline biochars on the gas emissions from liquid manure. Materials including two commercial biochars prepared from walnut shell (WA) and coconut shell (CC), respectively, and coal (CO) were applied (with manure/biochar ratio of 201 in weight) to examine their influence on NH3, CH4, and N2O emissions from liquid pig manure during a 68-d period in comparison with a control (CK, without biochars), and to investigate the evolution of the manure N mass balances and the changes in biochar properties during liquid manure storage to understand the characteristics of biochar. Compared with the CK, the application of WA, CC, and CO biochars increased the NH3 emissions by 4.00, 3.87, and 1.23 times, respectively, the absorbed N content of the biochars was markedly lower than the enhanced gaseous losses through NH3 emissions. Similarly, the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the manure with WA, CC, and CO biochar application were 6.28, 5.55, and 0.83 times greater than those observed with the CK, respectively, and were mainly attributed to the enhanced CH4 emissions. The significant contribution (5%-12%) of indirect GHG emissions from the enhanced NH3-N losses was also identified. The hypothesis for the enhanced gas emissions from liquid manure with biochar addition has been discussed in the present study; however, further investigation in the future is warranted.
