In vitro antibactericidal tests indicated that the Se/MSNs could exhibit better antibacterial activity against S. aureus than pure Se nanoparticles after 6 and 24 h of culturing. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 10Se/MSN was 100 μg mL-1. However, the Se/MSNs exhibited no inhibitory effect on E. coli bacteria. Furthermore, all the samples exhibited excellent cell viability. These studies demonstrate initial in vitro antibacterial activity and good cytocompatibility of Se/MSNs and their potential application in antibacterial nanomedicine. This study presents the development of a cholesterol-selective adsorbent that can be easily produced for the highly efficient removal of cholesterol from milk. A fundamental affinity separation technology which was combined with the specific recognition property of molecular imprinting with a high flow rate and the resulting cryogel was used to separate cholesterol separation from milk samples. The proposed material offers a reasonable pore size and structure, high surface area, and mechanical and chemical stability. To separation the cholesterol from milk, poly(2-hyroxyethyl methacrylate-N-methacryloyl-l-tryptophan methylester) cryogel beads were prepared using a functional monomer that allowed the formation of cholesterol-selective binding sites and enhanced the selective removal of cholesterol from milk. Characterization studies of the cholesterol-imprinted cryogel beads (CHO-MIPs) were carried out by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, elemenel was well fitted as compare to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The obtained kinetics data showed that a pseudo-second order mechanism was predominant for the CHO-MIP cryogel bead adsorption. V.OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the heterogeneity in chemical composition of bovine enamel using atom probe tomography, and thereby evaluate the suitability of bovine enamel as a substitute for human enamel in in vitro dental research. DESIGN Enamel samples from extracted bovine incisor teeth were first sectioned using a diamond saw and then milled into needle-like samples ( less then 100 nm diameter) by focused ion beam (FIB) coupled with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). These samples were analyzed in the atom probe to acquire three-dimensional (3D) images and quantify the atomic chemistry and distribution in bovine enamel. RESULTS For the first time, the atomic-level composition and clustering of major constituents and impurities within bovine enamel were determined and imaged. We discovered that the chemical composition of bovine enamel is spatially inhomogeneous at the atomic scale. The average bulk Ca/P ratio, ∼1.4, was in agreement with previously reported literature values from alternative conventional methods. When assessed locally at the atomic scale, the Ca/P ratio varied between 1.1 and 2.03. We also discovered that the Mg impurities were significantly segregated throughout the enamel, and such clustering influenced the variation of Ca/P ratios. The increase in Mg concentrations, near the Mg clusters, correlated with increased Ca and decreased P concentrations. CONCLUSION The presented findings of variability in local composition should be taken into account when interpreting dental research results from bovine enamel. INTRODUCTION A volar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb is a rare trauma, and in combination with a radial collateral ligament (RCL) injury is much rarer. We present a surgical case with a recurrent volar dislocation of the MCP joint of the thumb with RCL injury. PRESENTATION OF CASE A 47-year-old man was referred to our hospital in the subacute phase. Open reduction was performed through a dorsal incision and the RCL was repaired. MI-773 clinical trial X-rays taken six weeks later revealed a recurrent dislocation of the MCP joint. At the revision surgery, the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) was detached from the proximal phalanx. As there was volar tightness, the volar plate was incised horizontally and the EPB was attached to the proximal phalanx. The final X-rays six months post-operatively revealed that the MCP joint was slightly subluxated but there was no pain on motion. DISCUSSION This case revealed that it is not enough only to repair the RCL to reduce a volar dislocation of the MCP joint of the thumb with an RCL injury. It revealed that re-attachment of the extensor tendons and the volar procedure are also important for a perfect reduction of a recurrent volar dislocation of the MCP joint of the thumb. CONCLUSION For a volar dislocation of the MCP joint of the thumb with RCL injury, it is important not only to repair the RCL, but also to perform arthroplasty with the extensor tendons and a volar procedure to prevent recurrent dislocation after surgery. INTRODUCTION Acute-on-chronic mesenteric ischemia (ACMI) refers to acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) developing in a patient displaying typical symptoms of chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI). Delayed treatment can cause short bowel syndrome and increased mortality. Intervention involves intestinal revascularization and resection of the necrotic intestine. However, the revascularization procedure must consider the chronic nature of the occlusion. PRESENTATION OF CASE A 79-year-old man presented with periumbilical pain for 6 h. AMI was diagnosed, together with chronic superior mesenteric artery occlusion and suspected intestinal necrosis. The symptomatic CMI might have insufficient blood flow to intestines. Endovascular recanalization of the superior mesenteric artery using direct stenting was performed before laparotomy to improve blood flow to the intestines. Subsequent laparotomy revealed approximately 60 cm of ischemic small bowel extending from the jejunum (300 cm anal to the ligament of Treitz) to the ileum (30 cm oral to the terminal ileum). The necrotic bowel was resected without anastomosis. At the second-look operation, further resection was not required. DISCUSSION Making a differential diagnosis between acute and acute-on-chronic occlusions is essential for determining the necessity of recanalization and the method of restoring the intestinal blood flow. Here, the patient with symptomatic CMI might have had insufficient blood flow to the intestines despite establishing collateral supply. We determined that recanalization was needed. Direct stenting without predilation could save time to recanalization and result in less risk of distal embolization. CONCLUSION This case suggests prompt recanalization using direct stenting can minimize subsequent bowel resection in patients with ACMI.
