This study identifies areas within reproductive spaces of genetic counseling that could be more inclusive, particularly relating to commonly used gendered language and written materials, and provides training recommendations for genetic counselors. Additionally, we outline the reported areas of discrimination for these patients and partners, and discuss ways that genetic counselors can be advocates for respectful and equitable care within their clinics.Herein, we report a rhodium catalyzed directing-group free regioselective C-H allylation of simple arenes. Readily available gem-difluorinated cyclopropanes can be employed as highly reactive allyl surrogates via a sequence of C-C and C-F bond activation, providing allyl arene derivatives in good yields with high regioselectivity under mild conditions. The robust methodology enables facile late-stage functionalization of complex bioactive molecules. The high efficiency of this reaction is also demonstrated by the high turnover number (TON, up to 1700) of the rhodium catalyst on gram-scale experiments. Preliminary success on kinetic resolution of this transformation is achieved, providing a promising access to enantio-enriched gem-difluorinated cyclopropanes.To clarify the association between lifestyle changes as a result of coronavirus disease 2019 containment measures and changes in metabolic and glycemic status in patients with diabetes, a cross-sectional, single-center, observation study was carried out. A self-reported questionnaire was provided to ascertain the frequency of various lifestyle activities before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 containment measures in Japan. Among 463 patients, change in glycated hemoglobin was significantly associated with change in bodyweight. After stratification by age 65 years, binary logistic regression analysis showed that increased frequency of snack eating increased bodyweight (odds ratio 1.709, P = 0.007) and glycated hemoglobin (odds ratio 1.420, P = 0.025) in the younger group, whereas in the older patients, reduced walking activities resulted in weight gain (odds ratio 0.726, P = 0.010). In conclusion, changes in eating behavior and physical activity increased bodyweight and reduced glycemic control among diabetes patients, but by different processes depending on age under the coronavirus disease 2019 containment measures in Japan.

To describe a patient with subacute parkinsonism and cognitive dysfunction and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evidence of bilateral deep white matter and basal ganglia damage.

A 56-year-old female presented with a 4-week history of insomnia, cognitive decline, and parkinsonism. Brain MRI revealed a bilateral lesion of both globus pallidus, deep white matter, and cerebellar hemispheres. Her son reported that, for the previous month, she had been cleaning her facial mask three times a day with a pure methanol solution as a disinfectant due to an intense fear of acquiring COVID-19. Previously, she had used 97% isopropyl alcohol and had inadvertently switched to methanol. After the exposure ended, she slowly improved but 4months later she remains severely disabled.

The repeated exposure to methanol vapor, the MRI findings, and the absence of other etiologies for her cognitive and parkinsonian features led to the diagnosis of chronic methanol intoxication with severe central nervous system damage. Misinformation is a likely contributory factor to such scenario. Efforts should be made by the scientific community to educate the general public on avoiding self-damaging behaviors as a result of coronaphobia.

To determine the prognostic factors for orthognathic surgery (OGS) in children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) using artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

This study included 126 patients with bilateral and unilateral CL/P for whom lateral cephalograms were obtained at three time points 7 (T1), 10 (T2) and 15 (T3) years of age.

Cleft type, severity of lip separation at birth, number of missing teeth, sex, palatal repair methods and surgeons, cephalometric variables at T1 and T2, and the total duration of orthodontic treatment were examined as predictors. The need for OGS and skeletal and dental discrepancies at T3 was examined as outcomes.

A total of six models were developed, with a mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.93. Multiple prognostic factors for OGS were identified. In particular, the number of clefts in the lip and alveolus showed relatively high odds ratios, as did anterior crossbite at T3. Achieving palatal closure with the push-back method, rather than Furlow's method, was also found to be a predictive factor for anterior crossbite at T3, with high odds ratios.

National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data were used with 20- to 64-year-old adults (n = 20,360; mean age 41.9 years; male 50.5%; non-Hispanic White 64.3%). Sex- and sex- and race-specific linear trends in the prevalence of obesity, abdominal obesity, and moderate and vigorous work- and recreation-related PA and SB were estimated. Weighted logistic models explored the association between risk of obesity or abdominal obesity with each type of PA and SB by sex, adjusted for relevant confounders.

There were significant increasing trends in obesity and abdominal obesity in both sexes and in Hispanic adults. Men at higher vigorous work-related PA levels (P = 0.045) and women at higher moderate recreational-related PA (P = 0.005) levels had decreased risk of abdominal obesity.
