Youth with intellectual disabilities involved in child welfare systems are at greater risk of sexual victimization than youth who have not been investigated for child maltreatment. This study addresses a gap in the literature regarding older youth with intellectual disabilities who are sexually victimized and pushed to engage in transactional sex while they are transitioning from child welfare systems involvement. It does so by examining risk and protective factors at the individual, micro, exo, and macro systems levels.

This study included 334 youth ages 18-19.5 from a nationally representative sample of 5,872 child welfare-involved youth.

Multivariate logistic regression models were used to conduct a secondary analysis of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II to examine relationships between intellectual ability, social support, and community environment and sexual victimization and engaging in transactional sex.

Results indicate that 2.5 % of the youth experienced sexual victimization in the past 12 months, and 3.9 % had engaged in transactional sex in the past 6 months. Housing insecurity is endemic among low-income, marginalized families throughout the United States. Unstably housed families face increased likelihood of coming into contact with various social systems that upend family routines and norms, but the roles of these contacts in linking housing insecurity with long-term adolescent outcomes are unknown.

The present study tested whether family contacts with the criminal justice and child welfare systems mediated links between housing insecurity and adverse adolescent outcomes.

Data came from at-risk families with children born 1998-2000 in 20 large American cities followed over 15 years (N = 2,892).

Structural equation modeling estimated a measurement model using confirmatory factor analysis and a structural model testing direct and indirect pathways from housing insecurity to adolescent depression and delinquency via contact with the criminal justice and child welfare systems.

Housing insecurity was associated with increased contact with both the criminal justice and child welfare systems. Housing insecurity at age 5 was directly associated with adolescent depression at age 15 (β = 0.09, p < 0.05) and indirectly associated with adolescent delinquency via mothers' criminal justice (β = 0.04, p < 0.05) and child welfare (β = 0.07, p < 0.05) contacts.

The activation of phenoloxidase (PO) system is one of the primary responses involved in insects' innate immunity when facing parasites and pathogens, and ingestion of MPs can trigger a similar process. This study aimed at addressing the activities of basal PO and total PO (PO+ prophenoloxidase - proPO), in Chironomus riparius larvae (a model species in ecotoxicology) exposed to sediments spiked with polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs; size-range 32-63 µm; concentrations 1.25; 5; to 20 g kg-1) for 48 h. The ingestion of PE-MPs by larvae triggered a significant increase of basal PO activity at 5 and 20 g PE-MPs kg-1, by 26% and 29%, respectively, whereas total PO increased significantly in the latter (+48%), suggesting de novo synthesis of proPO by organisms. Considering the particle size, the immune response's activation is probably linked to damage in the epithelial cells of the gut lumen. This research work provides the first evidence on the activation of the insect's innate immune system after ingestion of MPs and underlines the PO activity as a good indicator of the immune response induced by MPs' ingestion.Corncob, an agricultural bio-waste, was used as adsorbent to remove organic and inorganic contaminants in waste lubricating oil (WLO) from diesel engine. To improve its adsorption capacity, corncob was modified with mixed solution of nitric acid, Hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and ethanol. Characterization results showed the crystallinity index of corncob enhanced 12%, which would be ascribed to the disruption of the dense lignin-carbohydrates structure in lignocellulose biomass by modification. The surface of modified corncob became smoother and porous. The adsorption results showed modified corncob had better removal rates to contaminants than raw corncob. For WLO with 80,000 km mileage, the removal rates to Fe, Al, Cu were enhanced from 19%, 6.4%, 48-27%, 27%, 53%, while that for oxide, sulphate, aromates, soot and insoluble resins were enhanced 1.7, 1.2, 3.0, 1.7 and 1.7 times. The reduction rate of total acid number to WLO with 40,000, 60,000, 80,000 km were enhanced 16%, 9%, 12% by modified corncob, respectively.
