Partnership among procedures involving eyesight security against solar uv radiation as well as cataract inside a rural area.
Recently, some studies have addressed the use of a folded substrate to realize stretchable electronic devices including stretchable thermoelectric generators (TEGs). However, the utilization of the folded substrate as a heat radiation fin has not been achieved. Herein, we have proposed the construction of a TEG with an origami-like folded structure substrate called an "origami-fin" that can achieve a high heat radiation performance and is also highly stretchable. The origami-fin increases the stretchability of the TEG by bending a non-stretchable material into a folded shape, and it also works as a heat radiator because of its large surface area compared to that of a flat structure. We evaluated the heat radiation performance of the origami-fin and the stability of the performance when it was stretched. The results demonstrate that the origami-fin works as a heat radiator and enhances the output of the TEG, while also exhibiting a high stretchability with only a slight output reduction.Sarcopenia is associated with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and basic activities of daily living (BADL) disabilities. We developed an index for assessing sarcopenia degree (sarcoscore) and compared it to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) criteria. Principal component analyses of walking speed, handgrip strength, and skeletal muscle index were performed to develop a sarcoscore using 3088 Japanese population-based cross-sectional data. During the nine-year follow-up, 278 of 2571 and 88 of 2341 participants developed IADL and BADL disabilities, respectively. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models showed that the sarcoscore criteria, defined as proportional to the sarcopenia prevalence diagnosed by the AWGS criteria, had higher hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for disability onset than the AWGS criteria (IADL disability 2.19 (1.64-2.93) vs 1.79 (1.32-2.43), BADL disability 4.28 (2.63-6.96) vs 3.22 (1.97-5.27)). The adjusted HRs for IADL and BADL disabilities were reduced by 4% and 8% per point increase in the sarcoscore, respectively. The sarcoscore assessed the degree of sarcopenia and had a satisfactory performance for predicting functional disabilities in older Japanese adults, suggesting its usefulness as a complementary composite marker for clinical diagnosis.BACKGROUND Concussion symptoms typically resolve within 7-10 days, but 10%-25% of patients do not fully recover. They can develop post-concussion syndrome (PCS), which includes sleep abnormalities such as obstructive sleep apnea. It is unclear how specific sleep problems manifest in PCS and how it relates to cognition and symptomology. METHODS A retrospective chart review was conducted on PCS patients seen at the University Health Network (UHN) Concussion Clinic and sent for sleep study. Neuropsychology tests, concussion features, PCS symptoms, and demographics were abstracted from clinical charts. Sleep measures were abstracted from the overnight sleep study. Data were analyzed using chi-squared tests and linear regression. RESULTS Fifty-one patients completed the sleep study; 78% of these were diagnosed with sleep apnea. Patients with sleep apnea reported significantly more memory symptoms. see more A trend existed for higher total symptom number. Age was significantly different between the two groups. Women and men were equally at risk of being diagnosed with sleep apnea. CONCLUSIONS Sleep apnea is common in PCS patients complaining of non-restorative sleep and/or waking up with headaches. Sleep apnea was associated with more memory symptoms. PCS patients are at higher risk for sleep apnea and sleep study should be considered if complaining of non-restorative sleep and/or waking up with headaches, regardless of sex and other known risk factors.Rapid growth in molecular structure data is renewing interest in featurizing structure. Featurizations that retain information on biological activity are particularly sought for protein molecules, where decades of research have shown that indeed structure encodes function. Research on featurization of protein structure is active, but here we assess the promise of autoencoders. Motivated by rapid progress in neural network research, we investigate and evaluate autoencoders on yielding linear and nonlinear featurizations of protein tertiary structures. An additional reason we focus on autoencoders as the engine to obtain featurizations is the versatility of their architectures and the ease with which changes to architecture yield linear versus nonlinear features. While open-source neural network libraries, such as Keras, which we employ here, greatly facilitate constructing, training, and evaluating autoencoder architectures and conducting model search, autoencoders have not yet gained popularity in the structure biology community. Here we demonstrate their utility in a practical context. Employing autoencoder-based featurizations, we address the classic problem of decoy selection in protein structure prediction. Utilizing off-the-shelf supervised learning methods, we demonstrate that the featurizations are indeed meaningful and allow detecting active tertiary structures, thus opening the way for further avenues of research.BACKGROUND We propose the potential studies on material fluidity to induce epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in MCF-7 cells. In this study, we examined for the first time the effect of material fluidity on EMT using poly(ε-caprolactone-co-D,L-lactide) (P(CL-co-DLLA)) with tunable elasticity and fluidity. METHODS The fluidity was altered by chemically crosslinking the polymer networks. The crosslinked P(CL-co-DLLA) substrate showed a solid-like property with a stiffness of 261 kPa, while the non-crosslinked P(CL-co-DLLA) substrate of 100 units (high fluidity) and 500 units (low fluidity) existed in a quasi-liquid state with loss modulus of 33 kPa and 30.8 kPa, respectively, and storage modulus of 10.8 kPa and 20.1 kPa, respectively. RESULTS We observed that MCF-7 cells on low fluidic substrates decreased the expression of E-cadherin, an epithelial marker, and increased expression of vimentin, a mesenchymal marker. This showed that the cells lose their epithelial phenotype and gain a mesenchymal property.
