Patients suffering from respiratory failure for a variety of reasons were included in the study if they received mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours in the ICU. The patients were randomly allocated to either the assist/control (A/C) group or the pressure support ventilation (PSV) group according to the ventilator mode. The factors associated with weaning success and failure were analyzed.
A total of 40 patients participated in this study. Of these, 25 weaning cases were successful and 15 were failures. There were 19 cases in the A/C group, yielding a success rate of 63%, and 21 cases in the PSV group, yielding a success rate of 62%. There were no value in predicting weaning.
Compared with RSBI, WI shows a better value in predicting weaning, especially for mechanically ventilated patients in PSV mode, WI has greater value in predicting weaning.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) 4b/a gene polymorphism and renal interstitial fibrosis in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) via a meta-analysis, in the hope of providing guidance for the genotypic detection of DN.
The Boolean logic search method was adopted. A literature search of PubMed, Medline, CNKI, and other databases from inception to June 2020 was performed using the search terms "eNOS 4b/a", "diabetes", "renal interstitial fibrosis", and "kidney disease". Literatures with a DN group, a non-nephropathy diabetic group, and a normal control group were screened. Review Manager software was employed to perform the meta-analysis.
A total of 13 articles were included in the meta-analysis, the majority of which had a low risk of bias (i.e., medium and high quality). The results of the meta-analysis indicated that the genotypic distribution frequency of eNOS4bb in patients with DN was significantly lower than that in the non-nephropaof eNOS4bb in DN renal interstitial patients was lower than that in non-nephropathy diabetic patients and normal controls.
Salvia miltiorrhiza is a traditional Chinese medicine with remarkable antioxidant, antibacterial, and anticoagulant properties. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza injection in protecting Schwann cells (SCs) from hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced cell apoptosis.
3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the establishment of the SC apoptosis model induced by H2O2. The effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza injection on injured cell morphology was observed, and the effect on cell apoptosis was determined by Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) apoptosis detection kit and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Western blotting analysis was used to detect the effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza injection on apoptosis-related protein expression.
The results of the MTT assay showed that cell activity significantly decreased after treatment with 1 mM H2O2, but different concentrations of Salvia miltiorrhiza injection could improve cell activity at different degrees. The number of cells increased significantly after treatment with Salvia miltiorrhiza injection. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining and TUNEL results revealed that Salvia miltiorrhiza injection could significantly reduce apoptosis induced by H2O2. Western blotting analysis showed that the expression of Bcl-2 was significantly upregulated, while the expression level of Bax was significantly downregulated.
Salvia miltiorrhiza injection can protect SCs from H2O2-induced cell apoptosis, and has potential therapeutic effects in neurological disease.

To understand the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Shenzhen and to analyze the risk factors for the occurrence and development of DR. Based on the comprehensive information system for diabetes prevention and control in the communities of Shenzhen in 2019, six community health service centers in Shenzhen were used as research sites to carry out multicenter, cross-sectional screening studies.
Cluster random sampling was used to collect data from 904 patients with diabetes in Shenzhen. The occurrence of DR and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy (VTDR) was analyzed, and multivariate logistic regression was performed to analyze the risk factors for DR and VTDR. EpiData version 3.1 (EpiData Association, Odense, Denmark) statistical software was used to build a database, and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., USA) was used to sort up and analyze the data.
The prevalence of DR among diabetic patients in Shenzhen was 18.58% [95% confidence interval (CI) 16.13-21.3%], and the prevalence of VTDR was 2.43% (95% CI 1.57-1.2%). The prevalence of DR and VTDR was higher in males than in females. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, disease duration, medication mode, and the occurrence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) were associated with the incidence of DR in diabetic patients, and that disease duration, the occurrence of DPN, and diabetic nephropathy were associated with the occurrence of VTDR.
The prevalence of DR in the communities of Shenzhen is high. Age, disease duration, medications, and DPN are the major risk factors for the occurrence of DR.
