Human biomonitoring (HBM) studies have demonstrated widespread and daily exposure to bisphenol A (BPA). Moreover, BPA structural analogues (e.g. BPS, BPF, BPAF), used as BPA replacements, are being increasingly detected in human biological matrices. BPA and some of its analogues are classified as endocrine disruptors suspected of contributing to adverse health outcomes such as altered reproduction and neurodevelopment, obesity, and metabolic disorders among other developmental and chronic impairments. One of the aims of the H2020 European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) is the implementation of effect biomarkers at large scales in future HBM studies in a systematic and standardized way, in order to complement exposure data with mechanistically-based biomarkers of early adverse effects. This review aimed to identify and prioritize existing biomarkers of effect for BPA, as well as to provide relevant mechanistic and adverse outcome pathway (AOP) information in order to cover knowledge gaps and better incussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort to comprehensively identify bisphenol-related biomarkers of effect for HBM purposes.Chlordecone (CLD) is a toxic organochlorine pesticide frequently used in the French West Indies until 1993, resulting in a contamination of soil and food. read more This study assessed the behaviour of CLD residues and CLD processing factors (PFs) during four home cooking processes cooking in a conventional oven ("oven"), frying ("pan"), cooking in a microwave oven ("microwave") and grilling ("grill"). These four processes were applied to six types of naturally contaminated beef (kidney, liver, rib, chuck, top-sirloin and sirloin). Targeted analyses with isotopic dilution were carried out by ID-HPLC-MS/MS to determine CLD concentrations before and after each cooking process and the corresponding processing factors. HPLC-HRMS/MS was used to find potential organochlorine degradation by-products and/or CLD metabolites present in samples by target, suspect and non-target screening. Cooking processes and especially microwave cooking led to a significant decrease in the CLD contained in beef (2% less then PF less then 17%). Traces of 5b-hydro-CLD and of another mono-hydro-CLD were found in the uncooked liver but no CLD degradation by-product was observed in the cooked liver. In October 2017, hundreds of wildfires ravaged the forests of the north and centre of Portugal. The fires were fanned by strong winds as tropical storm Ophelia swept the Iberian coast, dragging up smoke (together with Saharan dust from north-western Africa) into higher western European latitudes. Here we analyse the long-range transport of particulate matter (PM10) and study associations between PM10 and short-term mortality in the Portuguese population exposed to PM10 due to the October 2017 wildfires, the worst fire sequence in the country over the last decades. We analysed space- and ground-level observations to track the smoke plume and dust trajectory over Portugal and Europe, and to access PM10 concentrations during the wildfires. The effects of PM10 on mortality were evaluated using satellite data for exposure and Poisson regression models. The smoke plume covered most western European countries (including Spain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands), and reached the United Kingdom, where the populationealth threats to areas far from the ignition sites.Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is an important constituent of light-absorbing organic aerosols with many unclear issues. Here, the light-absorption properties of BrC with different polarity characteristics at a regional site of Pearl River Delta Region during 2016-2017, influenced by sources and molecular compositions, were revealed using radiocarbon analysis and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Humic-like substance (HULIS), middle polar (MP), and low polar (LP) carbon fractions constitute 46 ± 17%, 30 ± 7%, and 7 ± 3% of total absorption coefficient from bulk extracts, respectively. Our results show that the absorption proportions of HULIS and MP to the total BrC absorption are higher than their mass proportions to organic carbon mass, indicating that HULIS and MP are the main light-absorbing components in water-soluble and water-insoluble organic carbon fractions, respectively. With decreases in non-fossil HULIS, MP, and LP carbon fractions (66 ± 2%, 52 ± 2%, and 36 ± 3%, respectively), the abundances of unsaturated compounds and mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm of three fractions decreased synchronously. Increases in both non-fossil carbon and levoglucosan in winter imply that the enhanced light-absorption could be attributed to elevated levels of biomass burning organic aerosols (BBOA), which increases the number of light-absorbing nitrogen-containing compounds. Moreover, the major type of potential BrC in HULIS and MP carbon fractions are oxidized BBOA, but the potential BrC chromophores in LP are mainly associated with primary BBOA. This study reveals that biomass burning has adverse effects on radiative forcing and air quality, and probably indicates the significant influences of atmospheric oxidation reactions on the forms of chromophores.Feminine hygiene products (FHPs) are used on highly permeable and sensitive vaginal and vulvar tissues by many women. These products contain a variety of chemicals, and few regulations require disclosure of their ingredients. The objectives of this study are to identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may be present in these products and to evaluate the potential for exposure and health risk associated with product use. We collected 79 commercially available FHPs, including washes, tampons, menstrual pads, wipes, sprays, powders and moisturizers, and analyzed their composition using purge and trap sampling, thermal desorption, gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. Exposures and risks were modeled using reasonable upper bound exposure scenarios. The highest VOC concentrations (as total target VOCs) were found in washes, sprays and powders, with median concentrations from 25,000 to 34,000 ng/g. Benzene (maximum 3,604 ng/g) was detected in 83% of the collected products, and 1,4-dioxane (maximum 24,354 ng/g) in 50% of the products.
