To describe the findings of in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) in a case of bilateral acute microcystic epitheliopathy after daily soft contact lens wear.

IVCM and AS-OCT were used in the course of the bilateral epitheliopathy of a 23-year-old patient at the acute stage of the disease and at recovery after four days of treatment. The images were analyzed and compared.

On AS-OCT of the right eye, general hyperreflectivity and the increased thickness of the central corneal epithelium to 150
m with numerous hyporeflective small, oval cysts were revealed and resolved completely at day 4 after diagnosis and treatment. AS-OCT scans of the left eye revealed oval shaped, hyperreflective material within the corneal epithelium. IVCM of both eyes showed numerous microcysts of different sizes filled with hyperreflective material mostly within superficial epithelial layers. Epithelial cells showed a polymorphism along with disruption of a cytoarchitecture. Basal epithelial cells and anterior stroma showed inflammatory changes. Posterior corneal stroma and endothelium presented normal morphology.

Microcystic keratitis appeared as localized microcystic inflammation of epithelium on AS-OCT, which was confirmed by IVCM. Both IVCM and AS-OCT are helpful diagnostic instruments in case of cystic inflammation of corneal epithelium.

This chart review of a quaternary academic medical center electronic medical record (EMR) aimed to identify patients at risk of development of maculopathy with exposure to pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS).

A review of electronic medical records of a quaternary medical center of patients with either documented exposure to PPS or diagnosis of interstitial cystitis (IC) from 2007 to 2019 was performed for retinal imaging and visual acuity; the study was conducted in August of 2019.

216 charts were included for analysis, of which 96 had documented eye exams and 24 had retinal imaging done. We identified three patients with maculopathy in the context of long-term exposure to PPS via chart review, and one additional patient was identified by referral. The median PPS exposure duration was 11 years (range 7 to 19 years). Median logMAR BCVA OD 0.6 range was 0.0-1.9 (approximate Snellen equivalent 20/80 range (20/20-20/1600)) and OS 0.7 range was 0.1-1.9 (approximate Snellen equivalent 20/100 range (20/25-20/160vision loss in both eyes.
A dome-shaped macula (DSM) is an inward convexity or anterior deviation of the macular area. DSM is believed as a protective factor in maintaining visual acuity in highly myopic eyes.

To investigate the correlation between best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and a dome-shaped macula (DSM) in highly myopic eyes.

In this retrospective and observational case series study, BCVA tests and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were performed in a total of 472 highly myopic eyes (refractive error ≥6.5 diopters or axial length ≥26.5 mm). CNV was detected by fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA), and the CNV area was measured by ImageJ software. BCVA, central retinal thickness (CRT), and the CNV area were compared between highly myopic eyes with and without DSM.

The data revealed 13 eyes with DSM complicated by CNV, for an estimated prevalence of 25%. The eyes with CNV in the DSM group showed worse BCVA than those in the non-DSM group (1.59 ± 0.69 and 0.63 ± 0.64, respectively, ective capability is present, then the eye will have more severe CNV and worse visual acuity. This study aimed to analyze the frequency, drug susceptibility, and drug resistance of pathogens causing microbial keratitis (a corneal inflammation) in the Clinical Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice. Despite intensive treatment, severe inflammation causes irreversible blindness in ∼7% of cases and eye loss (evisceration or enucleation of the eyeball) in ∼1% of cases at our hospital. The choice of a targeted drug depends on the culture result and drug resistance of the microorganism. This was a retrospective observation study. Conjunctival swabs and corneal scrapes were collected between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2019, in the tertiary reference center for keratitis. The collected data included the type of material received, culture result, and antimicrobial susceptibilities. Of the 2482 samples analyzed, 679 were positive and 1803 were negative. click here Of the total pathogens isolated, 69.9% were Gram-positive bacteria, 20.8% were Gram-negative bacteria, and 7.1% were fungi. A significant increase in the number of Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and a partial increase in the number of Gram-negative beta-lactams-resistant bacteria were observed. All fungal species were sensitive to amphotericin B, 82.81% were sensitive to voriconazole, and 56.25% were sensitive to fluconazole. Dual drug therapy (levofloxacin and tobramycin) was the first-line treatment. Drug susceptibility testing of the cultured microorganisms is necessary to initiate targeted treatment. Increased drug resistance was observed in this study. In the present study, most bacteria were sensitive to fluoroquinolones. Ciprofloxacin therapy remains the recommended empirical treatment in microbial keratitis. According to our study, voriconazole remains a first-line antifungal drug, when a fungal infection is suspected.
Retinal structural and microvascular damages reflect damage to cerebral microvasculature and neurons. We aimed to investigate neovascular unit abnormalities among patients with large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) or small-vessel occlusion (SAA) and control subjects.

Twenty-eight LAA patients, forty-one SAA patients, and sixty-five age- and gender-matched controls were recruited. Based on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), retinal capillary vessel density was assessed in the general and local sectors, and the thickness of individual retinal layer was extracted from retinal structural images. The differences between structural and microvascular were analyzed.

The superior peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness was significantly different among the three groups, and the LAA group had the thinnest thickness. Compared to the control group, the deep retinal capillary vessel density in other two stroke subgroups were significantly reduced in all regions except in the inferior region (
