However, estimating the causal effect of evolution in the classroom is a challenge due to the fact that school curriculums are not assigned randomly and evolve over time because of the predetermined dates of gubernatorial election and state board of education appointments. To overcome this problem, I use an ongoing data set that allows me to control for state and year fixed effects and individual-level variation in the beliefs of teachers about evolution.

Teachers who are more comfortable in teaching evolution have less internal barriers. This is in line with the notion that more confident faculty are less likely to avoid evolution-related topics in the classroom. They may also be more inclined to employ strategies such as a reconciliatory approach that is known to boost undergraduate students' acceptance of evolution.
