How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to regular cleaning. The best models are capable of getting rid of dust, light debris and cords.
The more expensive models even clean your floors--though they still can't climb stairs. Make sure robot vacuum sale choose models with smart mapping, real-time hazard avoidance and large self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The best robots we tested were efficient, easy-to-use and able to cope with daily debris. You'll need a model with decent carpet-picking capability and the ability to take on stairs. If you're looking for extra features, you may be interested in a model that uses smart mapping technology, or an app that lets you control the robot remotely.
Camryn Rabideau is a contributing shopping writer and product reviewer at PEOPLE who has tested dozens of robotic vacuums. She's a fan of the robot vacuums that provide the greatest convenience, such as self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill the water tanks used by mopping robots. She also loves robots that recognize landmarks, such as furniture legs and power cables so they won't get tripped up when climbing steps.
Compared with the top-rated models this Black and Decker robot vacuum is less equipped with object-avoidance technology and its score for navigation is lower. It has a large dust bin that is non-refillable and an extended battery. It also has the ability to schedule cleaning sessions, and then return to where it stopped at the last point, making it easier to cover larger spaces. This model is a good choice for pet owners as it can avoid hair tangles and food particles.
In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined a LIDAR (light) sensor which can identify obstacles and map rooms using a structured-light sensor that can identify objects and detect edges. This combination lets it avoid steps, drops of liquid and furniture legs with ease and save up to four floor maps for future use. It is also able to stop the cleaning process at any time and resume where it left off, so you can do chores while the robot does its work. The included app provides the 3D image of your home, room labels and advanced cleaning options.
Although this model isn't able to clean as well as our top-rated models, it is superior in removing small particles like sand and baking soda as well as larger items, such as orzo pasta and screws made of metal. The only drawback is that it can't mop and has a less efficient navigation system.
The best for Carpet
If you have carpeting, choose an automatic vacuum that scores high for carpet and rug mobility and pickup. A lot of models are adept at collecting dust from low-pile rugs. Some do a decently job of sweeping up heavier debris such as orzo pasta and screws made of metal. They don't pick-up fine particles like an upright canister, and they may be unable to pick up dirt close to thresholds or baseboards.
The best choice for most carpeted homes is a two-in-one robot vacuum and mop that allows you to swap between a cleaning bin and mopping pad with damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop that can clean and mop at the same time with circular pads that spin at 200 rotations a minute. It detects and lifts the pads when it comes into contact with carpet, preventing it from soaking the floor. You do not need to take them off or replace them after each use. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuum/mops in keeping away from obstacles and being close to carpets and thresholds.
Another solid option is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which was a great performer in our tests and can be scheduled via the app to clean when you're away from home. It can also be set to only mop and we loved its excellent navigation on carpets and floors and its ability to get up and over furniture. The Combo i5 also has a very long run time and a great path-planning feature for a device of this size.
If you're looking to buy a high-tech vacuum, the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum & Mop is a fantastic alternative. It comes with a huge dock that can last for weeks and not need to be cleaned. It also has amazing capability to auto-empty carpets and floors that are not cleaned. It also has a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to be operational during certain times of the day (a handy feature for keeping children and pets who are prone to mischief from causing havoc). The Shark has less suction power than some other robot vacuum/mop combos, but its still very efficient in removing hair and pet hair and is the most affordable of our top picks.
Best for Hard Floors
Robot vacuums are the best choice for floors made of hardwood, since they can maneuver through obstacles with ease without causing damage bare surfaces. They do an excellent job of removing dust and crumbs, however they aren't able to handle pet hair and other larger particles. They lack the suction power of an expensive upright or canister vacuum, which is why they're not the ideal choice for carpeted areas or upholstery that requires deep cleaning.
The most effective two-in-one robots incorporate a vacuum and a mop, taking care of an entire task in one go. If you have flooring that is mixed you should look for models equipped with an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor's texture and adjusts suction accordingly. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+ for example, has this feature and can go seamlessly from hard to soft carpeting.
If your home is primarily comprised of hardwood floors, consider a robotic mop and vacuum combo like the eufy S1 Pro. This model is a powerful robot vacuum with smart navigation to clean hardwood floors and other hard surfaces, and it can mop too. The sensors help it avoid the stairs and other hazards, so you don't need to worry about the bot plummeting down the stairs and breaking your hardwood.
The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, instead of simply swab them to get rid of dirt and dust. Its reusable mop pads reduce the amount of waste, and reduce the spread of germs, and can be cleaned at the docking station, saving your time. robot vacuum sale can also be dried, washed and used again.
The robovac can be controlled via your smartphone, making it simpler to use. For instance you can use the app to set up a zone where the vacuum can't go, label separate rooms, or schedule cleaning times for certain areas. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that collects debris through a trapdoor and is then stored in a disposable or bagless bin, meaning you don't have to manually empty the bin as often as you do with other models.
Ideal for small Spaces
These robots are specifically designed for small spaces. They have smaller bins, which can hold less debris. They are also more efficient in maneuvering around tight corners over larger models. They can also be placed under furniture where larger robots can't reach. They tend to be cheaper than the higher-end models as well, but you'll have to empty their dirt compartments at the end of each cleaning session.
A few years ago, robot vacuums went through a major change. Manufacturers started adding sensors that allowed them to navigate and avoid household items that traditional sensors might get stuck on or run across. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers were required to clean up after a robot incident.
However, the latest sensors haven't resolved all of the issues these machines face. The cheaper models are still unable to navigate the same obstacles as the older models, and they require a certain level of light to see where they are going. If you are living in a dark space or have a lot of low-profile furniture, consider buying a model that utilizes top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your space like our best overall and runner-up picks do. This will allow them to avoid obstacles like stairs and other ones while working in the dark.
In addition being capable of working in the dark they can also be programmed to use their cliff sensors only near or on the floor, not when they're above them. It's essential to cover mirrors to prevent this from happening. The laser used by the LIDAR-based models can bounce off reflective surfaces, making the robot believe it's in a different room.
Some of the models we recommend allow you to create virtual no-go zones for areas you do not want the robot move, which is useful if you have pets or children. These features aren't included on all the models we test, so be sure to review our full reviews of the choices below before you make a purchase.
