The Importance of Understanding Evolution

The majority of evidence for evolution comes from studying the natural world of organisms. Scientists conduct lab experiments to test the theories of evolution.

In time the frequency of positive changes, such as those that help an individual in its fight for survival, increases. This process is called natural selection.

Natural Selection

Natural selection theory is a central concept in evolutionary biology. It is also a key topic for science education. Numerous studies show that the concept of natural selection and its implications are not well understood by a large portion of the population, including those with postsecondary biology education. Nevertheless an understanding of the theory is essential for both practical and academic situations, such as medical research and management of natural resources.

The easiest method to comprehend the concept of natural selection is as it favors helpful traits and makes them more common within a population, thus increasing their fitness. This fitness value is a function of the relative contribution of the gene pool to offspring in each generation.

The theory is not without its critics, but the majority of them believe that it is not plausible to believe that beneficial mutations will always become more common in the gene pool. They also argue that random genetic shifts, environmental pressures and other factors can make it difficult for beneficial mutations within a population to gain a place in the population.

These criticisms often are based on the belief that the concept of natural selection is a circular argument. A desirable trait must exist before it can benefit the entire population and a desirable trait will be preserved in the population only if it is beneficial to the population. The opponents of this view argue that the concept of natural selection is not actually a scientific argument instead, it is an assertion about the results of evolution.

A more thorough analysis of the theory of evolution concentrates on its ability to explain the evolution adaptive characteristics. These features, known as adaptive alleles, are defined as the ones that boost the chances of reproduction when there are competing alleles. The theory of adaptive genes is based on three elements that are believed to be responsible for the creation of these alleles through natural selection:

The first is a phenomenon known as genetic drift. This occurs when random changes occur in a population's genes. Genetic Modification can be used to tackle many of the most pressing issues in the world, including hunger and climate change.

Traditionally, scientists have used model organisms such as mice, flies and worms to understand the functions of certain genes. However, this method is limited by the fact that it isn't possible to modify the genomes of these animals to mimic natural evolution. Scientists can now manipulate DNA directly with gene editing tools like CRISPR-Cas9.

This is called directed evolution. Essentially, scientists identify the gene they want to alter and employ the tool of gene editing to make the necessary change. Then, they insert the modified genes into the body and hope that the modified gene will be passed on to future generations.

A new gene introduced into an organism may cause unwanted evolutionary changes, which can affect the original purpose of the modification. Transgenes inserted into DNA an organism can affect its fitness and could eventually be removed by natural selection.

Another concern is ensuring that the desired genetic modification extends to all of an organism's cells. This is a major obstacle, as each cell type is different. For instance, the cells that form the organs of a person are very different from the cells which make up the reproductive tissues. To make a difference, you must target all the cells.

These issues have led to ethical concerns regarding the technology. Some people believe that tampering with DNA is a moral line and is similar to playing God. Some people worry that Genetic Modification could have unintended consequences that negatively impact the environment or the well-being of humans.

Adaptation

Adaptation happens when an organism's genetic traits are modified to better suit its environment. These changes are typically the result of natural selection over several generations, but they may also be due to random mutations which make certain genes more common in a population. The effects of adaptations can be beneficial to an individual or a species, and can help them thrive in their environment. Examples of adaptations include finch-shaped beaks in the Galapagos Islands and polar bears who have thick fur. In certain instances two species could evolve to be dependent on one another in order to survive. For instance orchids have evolved to resemble the appearance and smell of bees to attract them for pollination.

An important factor in free evolution is the role of competition. The ecological response to environmental change is significantly less when competing species are present. This is due to the fact that interspecific competition has asymmetrically impacted population sizes and fitness gradients. This in turn influences how evolutionary responses develop after an environmental change.

The shape of resource and competition landscapes can have a significant impact on the adaptive dynamics. A bimodal or flat fitness landscape, for example, increases the likelihood of character shift. A low resource availability can also increase the probability of interspecific competition by decreasing the equilibrium population sizes for different types of phenotypes.

In simulations that used different values for the parameters k, m, V, and n, I found that the maximum adaptive rates of a disfavored species 1 in a two-species alliance are much slower than the single-species situation. This is because the favored species exerts both direct and indirect pressure on the disfavored one, which reduces its population size and causes it to lag behind the maximum moving speed (see the figure. 3F).

The impact of competing species on adaptive rates becomes stronger as the u-value approaches zero. The species that is favored can achieve its fitness peak more quickly than the less preferred one even when the U-value is high. The species that is favored will be able to exploit the environment faster than the disfavored one and the gap between their evolutionary rates will grow.

Evolutionary Theory


As one of the most widely accepted scientific theories evolution is an integral element in the way biologists examine living things. It is based on the belief that all living species evolved from a common ancestor via natural selection. According to BioMed Central, this is an event where a gene or trait which allows an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment is more prevalent within the population. The more often a genetic trait is passed down the more prevalent it will increase, which eventually leads to the formation of a new species.

The theory also describes how certain traits become more common by means of a phenomenon called "survival of the most fittest." In essence, organisms that possess traits in their genes that confer an advantage over their competition are more likely to survive and produce offspring. The offspring of these will inherit the advantageous genes, and as time passes the population will slowly grow.

In the period following Darwin's death a group of evolutionary biologists led by Theodosius Dobzhansky, Julian Huxley (the grandson of Darwin's bulldog, Thomas Huxley), Ernst Mayr and George Gaylord Simpson further extended his ideas. This group of biologists known as the Modern Synthesis, produced an evolutionary model that was taught to every year to millions of students in the 1940s & 1950s.

However, this evolutionary model doesn't answer all of the most pressing questions regarding evolution. It is unable to explain, for instance the reason that some species appear to be unchanged while others undergo dramatic changes in a relatively short amount of time. It doesn't deal with entropy either which asserts that open systems tend towards disintegration over time.

The Modern Synthesis is also being challenged by a growing number of scientists who are worried that it is not able to fully explain evolution.
