To evaluate and compare the effects of different surface conditioning methods of lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramic on shear bond strength (SBS) of metallic brackets.
Thirty-six lithium disilicate ceramic blocks mounted in acrylic resin blocks were assigned to 3 groups (n = 12) 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HF); neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet (NdYAG) laser; and carbon dioxide (CO
) laser. The glass ceramic surfaces were primed with a silane, and the brackets were bonded using a light-cured composite resin. SBS test was carried out in a universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed until the brackets were debonded. The remaining adhesive was evaluated under a stereomicroscope in terms of the adhesive remnant index (ARI). The surface hardness was determined with a 100-gr force using a microhardness tester. Glass ceramic surface changes were evaluated using the scanning electron microscope. One-way ANOVA and post hoc Tamhane tests were used to compare microhardness values, and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to analyze SBS values and ARI.
The median and interquartile range of SBS values in 3 groups were 6.48 (1.56-15.18), 1.26 (0.83-1.67), and 0.99 MPa (0.70-2.10), respectively. Microhardness analysis revealed significant differences between the CO
laser and intact porcelain groups (P = 0.003), without significant differences between the other groups. Group 1 exhibited the highest ARI.

nor NdYAG lasers resulted in adequate surface changes for bonding of brackets on ceramics compared with the samples conditioned with HF. CO
laser decreased the microhardness of ceramics.

This study aimed to investigate whether combined exposure to starch and sucrose modifies the activity of carbonic anhydrase VI (CA VI) in saliva (Study 1) and biofilm (Study 2) of children with early childhood caries (ECC).
For Study 1 and Study 2, respectively, 54 and 46 preschoolers aged 4 to 5 were allocated into two groups caries-free (CF) and with ECC. Children were exposed to rinses with sucrose, starch, and sucrose plus starch solutions. CA VI activity, pH, and buffering capacity (BC) were evaluated in saliva and biofilm.
In Study 1, a significant reduction in saliva pH was observed after sucrose and sucrose plus starch rinses. CA VI activity was influenced by ECC independently of the type of carbohydrate to which children were exposed. CA VI activity was higher in children with ECC; however, after rinses, CA VI activity was reduced. CA VI activity was significantly high before rinse in ECC group when compared with CF group; however, no difference was observed between groups after rinses.
In saliva, exposure to starch and sucrose (isolated or combined) induced a reduction in CA VI activity in children with ECC. In biofilm, the combination of starch and sucrose did not modify CA VI activity in ECC children.

To explore the pathophysiology of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, a rare oral disorder that exhibits high rates of recurrence and malignant transformation, through a RNAseq case-control study.
We obtained oral biopsies from 10 patients with verrucous leukoplakia lesions and from the mucosa of 5 healthy individuals for sequencing using RNAseq technology. Using bioinformatic methods, we investigated gene expression and enrichment differences between patients both with and without the disorder. We applied network biology methods to investigate functional relations among those genes that were differentially deregulated.
We detected 140 differentially expressed genes with distinct roles in immune surveillance, tissue and organ morphogenesis, development, and organization. Of these 140 genes, 111 have been previously described as cancer expression biomarkers, being oral squamous cell carcinoma the most represented type of cancer among them. Of these 140 genes, 26 were prioritized for further investigation as biomarkers using larger sample sizes.
The gene expression patterns of healthy and unhealthy patients differed in 140 genes whose deregulation has a functional impact on normal functioning of the immune system. This immune expression profile provides a plausible hypothesis to explain the transformation to oral squamous cell carcinoma observed in 6 of the 10 assayed cases.

By determining the molecular bases of the proliferative verrucous leukoplakia disorder and identifying early biomarkers of malignancy, this can allow us to develop new treatment strategies.Little is known about HIV testing among young men who have sex with men (MSM) in Southeastern European countries, nor about differences in testing by young ethnic majority and young Roma MSM, the region's most disadvantaged minority population. 271 young MSM (153 non-Roma and 118 Roma) were recruited in Sofia, Bulgaria and completed measures of HIV testing, psychosocial characteristics related to testing, sexual behavior, and substance use. While 74% of ethnic majority MSM had an HIV test (and 56% had multiple prior tests), only 4% of Roma MSM had ever been tested. Roma MSM had lower knowledge about HIV testing, perceived greater barriers and weaker social norms for testing, and held more negative testing attitudes and intentions. Although all had male partners, no Roma MSM self-identified as gay and most reported transactional sex. Efforts are urgently needed to increase HIV testing uptake by young Roma MSM.
