Short-term electrocardiogram (ECG) examinations of horses may not detect paroxysmal arrhythmias. Twenty-four hour Holter equipment can be unwieldy and inconvenient for long-term use. This study evaluated a novel long-term ECG patch recorder, the Carnation Ambulatory Monitor (CAM) in horses, determining ideal placement, practicality, durability and performance.

Twenty-one adult mixed-breed horses.

Prospective observational study. Three horses had ECG patches fitted at selected sites (phase 1); the two most promising sites were used for further wear testing (phase 2)and the best site was chosen for a trial in 18 horses (phase 3), 16 of which had presented for evaluation of cardiac disease. In phase 1, the CAM was compared with a standard telemetric ECG. The CAM ECGs were analysed using proprietary software.

The most promising sites for CAM placement were the ventral midline caudal to the xiphisternum and left thorax caudal to the girth. The ventral midline was chosen for further evaluation. The CAM provided reliable and generally excellent ECG quality at rest (median quality score 4.5/5, range 3-5), over extended periods, allowing detection of arrhythmias. The ECG quality was poor during exercise (median quality score 1, range 1-5), except in three horses. In 15/17 placements in the standing horse, greater than 85% of the potential recording time was achieved.

The CAM is a convenient and well-tolerated device for evaluating equine cardiac rhythm at rest over long periods. Further evaluation of the ideal placement site during exercise may increase its diagnostic utility.

Further evaluation of the ideal placement site during exercise may increase its diagnostic utility.The natural course of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections follows distinct clinical disease phases, characterized by fluctuating levels of serum HBV DNA and ALT. The immune cells and their features that govern these clinical disease transitions remain unknown. In the current study, we performed RNA sequencing on purified B cells from blood (n = 42) and liver (n = 10) of healthy controls and chronic HBV patients. We found distinct gene expression profiles between healthy controls and chronic HBV patients, as evidenced by 190 differentially expressed genes (DEG), but also between the clinical phenotypes of a chronic HBV infection (17-110 DEG between each phase). Numerous immune pathways, including the B cell receptor pathway were upregulated in liver B cells when compared to peripheral B cells. Further investigation of the detected DEG suggested an activation of B cells during HBeAg seroconversion and an active regulation of B cell signalling in the liver.The morphology, morphogenesis and molecular phylogeny of a new saline soil hypotrich ciliate, Uroleptoides salina nov. spec., discovered from China, was investigated. Furthermore, the presently available medications provide only symptomatic relief and have failed to mitigate the pathogenesis associated with PD. Therefore, the current study was aimed to evaluate the prospective of swertiamarin (SW), a secoiridoid glycoside isolated from a traditional medicinal plant, Enicostemma littorale Blume to ameliorate the characteristic features of PD in Caenorhabditis elegans. SW (25 μM) administration decreased the α-synuclein (α-syn) deposition, inhibited apoptosis and increased dopamine level mediated through upregulating the expression of genes linked to ceramide synthesis, mitochondrial morphology and function regulation, fatty acid desaturase genes along with stress responsive MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) pathway genes. The neuroprotective effect of SW was evident from the robust reduction of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) induced dopaminergic neurodegeneration independent of dopamine transporter (dat-1). SW mediated translational regulation of MAPK pathway genes was observed through increase expression of SKN-1 and GST-4. Further, in-silico molecular docking analysis of SW with C. elegans MEK-1 showed a promising binding affinity affirming the in-vivo results. Overall, these novel finding supports that SW is a possible lead for drug development against the multi- factorial PD pathologies.
