In the developed world, 5-years survival of childhood acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) has improved to 70%. However, the survival rates in the developing world are below 40%. The main contributing factors to these reduced survival rates are a late presentation, malnutrition and high treatment-related mortality.
To document the factors affecting treatment outcome of childhood AML at a tertiary care facility of Pakistan.
All newly registered cases of AML under 18 years of age from January 1, 2012 onwards who completed their treatment before November 30, 2019 were included. Data of 219 cases of AML containing 140 (63.9%) males and 79 (36.1%) females was analyzed. The mean age was 6.30 ± 3.66 years. Pallor was the commonest presenting features in 180 (82.2%) and M2 was the commonest French American-British (FAB) subtype in 103 (47.0%) cases. In univariate analysis, high white blood cells (WBC) count at presentation (P = .006), poor nutritional status (P = .005), unfavourable cytogenetics (P = .019), certain tyo the induction chemotherapy was the most significant prognostic factor.
CDK4/6 inhibitors have shown promising results for treating advanced breast cancer (ABC) and are routinely used in Singapore. In view of their high costs, it is important to assess their relative value compared to existing standards of care in the local setting.

A partitioned survival model with four health states (progression-free on first-line treatment, progression-free on second-line treatment, progressed disease, and death) was developed from a healthcare system perspective over a 10-year time horizon. The relationship between PD and homocysteine involves multiple pathways, including nerve cell apoptosis, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. This is crucial for explaining how high homocysteine drives the PD procession. Elevated homocysteine level during PD development and progression offers a new strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.Olfactory receptors are primarily known to be expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity and therefore assist in odor perception. With the advent of high-throughput omics technologies such as tissue microarray or RNA sequencing, a large number of olfactory receptors have been reported to be expressed in the nonolfactory tissues. Although these technologies uncovered the expression of these olfactory receptors in the nonchemosensory tissues, unfortunately, they failed to reveal the information about their cell type of origin. Accurate characterization of the cell types should be the first step towards devising cell type-specific assays for their functional evaluation. Single-cell RNA-sequencing technology resolved some of these apparent limitations and opened new means to interrogate the expression of these extranasal olfactory receptors at the single-cell resolution. Moreover, the availability of large-scale, multi-organ/species single-cell expression atlases offer ample resources for the systematic reannotation of these receptors in a cell type-specific manner. In this Viewpoint article, we discuss some of the technical limitations that impede the in-depth understanding of these extranasal olfactory receptors, with a special focus on odorant receptors. Moreover, we also propose a list of single cell-based omics technologies that could further promulgate the opportunity to decipher the regulatory network that drives the odorant receptors expression at atypical locations.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients commonly report muscle weakness and fatigue. Losing muscle mass increases mortality. Accordingly, we aimed to determine the main factors associated with loss of muscle mass and muscle weakness.
Anthropometric measurements were made in CKD patients attending a specialised clinic, along with hand grip strength (HGS), pinch strength (PS) and body composition (muscle mass and fat mass), using segmental bioimpedance assessment.
