Calprotectin plays an important role during inflammation. We intended to explore the prognostic value of serum calprotectin levels in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI).
In this prospective cohort study of 149 sTBI patients, we determined the relationship between serum calprotectin levels and 90-day overall survival plus poor outcome (Glasgow outcome scale score of 1-3) after sTBI, and analyzed its associations with Rotterdam computerized tomography (CT) scores, Glasgow coma scale (GCS) scores and two markers of inflammatory reaction including serum C-reactive protein levels and blood leucocyte count.
Serum calprotectin levels were significantly correlated with Rotterdam CT scores, GCS scores, serum C-reactive protein levels and blood leucocyte count. Patients with poor outcome at 90days displayed higher serum calprotectin levels than the other remainders. Serum calprotectin appeared as an independent predictor for 90-day overall survival and poor outcome. Under receiver operating characteristic curve, serum calprotectin levels exhibited an efficient discrimination capacity for 90-day poor outcome.
Serum calprotectin levels are significantly correlated with inflammation, trauma severity and poor outcome at 90days in sTBI patients, suggesting that serum calprotectin may be a biomarker for providing complementary prognostic information to identify patients at risk of poor outcome after sTBI.

We aimed to investigate the association between total bile acid (TBA) concentrations changes during the second and third trimesters and the risk of developing adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes (AMPO).
A total of 1569 pregnant Chinese women were enrolled. selleckchem Serum TBA concentrations were measured during the 16-18
and 29-34
weeks of gestation. Logistic regression models were performed.
After multivariable adjustment, each standard deviation increase in the TBA concentrations in the second trimester was associated with a 30% (odds ratio [OR]=1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13, 1.50) increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and a 22% (OR=1.22, 95% CI 1.07, 1.63) increased risk of premature rupture of membranes (PROM). When we compared the highest and lowest quartiles of changes in the TBA Z-scores across the second and third trimesters, the adjusted ORs were 1.84 (95% CI 1.28, 2.65) for PROM and 1.47 (95% CI 1.07, 2.28) for macrosomia.
Elevated serum TBA concentrations during pregnancy were positively associated with increased risks of GDM and PROM. Women with more drastic changes in TBA concentrations across the second and third trimesters were at a higher risk of developing PROM and macrosomia.

Second-generation antipsychotic agents are commonly used by clinicians for the treatment of various psychiatric and medical conditions. Despite their presumed safety, an overdose with olanzapine may lead to the development of anticholinergic toxicity. The anticholinergic toxidrome is characterized by both central and peripheral physical findings. Central anticholinergic syndrome, a term used to describe the symptoms that arise from reduced cholinergic activity in the central nervous system, is characterized primarily by signs and symptoms consistent with hyperactive delirium. Signs of peripheral anticholinergia include mydriasis and blurred vision, tremors, ataxia, fever/hyperthermia, flushed and dry skin, dry oral mucosa, decreased bowel sounds, constipation, and urinary retention, among other symptoms. In extreme cases, central anticholinergic syndrome can be associated with seizures, coma, respiratory failure, and cardiovascular collapse.
To provide scientific evidence regarding the efficacy and safety in the both the diagnosis and management of severe anticholinergic toxicity associated with an olanzapine overdose, which might be applicable to the antimuscarinic toxidrome associated with the ingestion of agents with significant anticholinergic activity.Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects approximately one million people in the USA with the number increasing by 5% each year. Patients are usually both diagnosed and treated in infancy, however many of them may have subclinical CHD that remains undiagnosed until late adulthood. Patients with complex CHD tend to be symptomatic and are diagnosed at a younger age than those with a single defect. CHDs can be divided into three categories, including cardiac, great vessels and coronary artery anomalies. Recent advances in computed tomography (CT) technology with faster acquisition time and improved spatial resolution allow for detailed evaluation of cardiac morphology and function. The concomitant increased utilization of CT has simultaneously led to more sensitive detection and more thorough diagnosis of CHD. Recognition of and understanding the imaging attributes specific to each anomaly is important for radiologists in order to make a correct and definite diagnosis. This article reviews the spectrum of CHDs, which persist into adulthood that may be encountered by radiologists on CT.The superior colliculus, or tectum in the case of non-mammalian vertebrates, is a part of the brain that registers events in the surrounding space, often through vision and hearing, but also through electrosensation, infrared detection, and other sensory modalities in diverse vertebrate lineages. This information is used to form maps of the surrounding space and the positions of different salient stimuli in relation to the individual. The sensory maps are arranged in layers with visual input in the uppermost layer, other senses in deeper positions, and a spatially aligned motor map in the deepest layer. Here, we will review the organization and intrinsic function of the tectum/superior colliculus and the information that is processed within tectal circuits. We will also discuss tectal/superior colliculus outputs that are conveyed directly to downstream motor circuits or via the thalamus to cortical areas to control various aspects of behavior. The tectum/superior colliculus is evolutionarily conserved among all vertebrates, but tailored to the sensory specialties of each lineage, and its roles have shifted with the emergence of the cerebral cortex in mammals.
