How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to cleaning. The best ones are adept at picking up dust as well as light debris and cords.
The most expensive models can even mop your floor but they aren't able to climb up the stairs. Find models with intelligent mapping, real-time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.
Best Overall
The best robots we tested were efficient, easy-to-use and able to cope with the daily debris. You'll need a model with decent carpet-picking capability and the ability to handle stairs. If you're looking for a robot with additional features, think about a model that has smart mapping technology or an app to control it remotely.
Camryn Rabideau is a contributing reviewer and writer for shopping at PEOPLE who has tried numerous robotic vacuums. She prefers the robovacs with the most conveniences like those with self-emptying bins and charging stations that automatically empty and refill water tanks to mop robotic vacuums. She also enjoys robots that recognize landmarks, such as furniture legs and power cables so they don't fall when climbing stairs.
This robot from Black and Decker has a lower score for navigation and has less technology for avoiding objects than the most popular models. However, it has an enormous dust bin that doesn't need regular emptying and has a lengthy battery life. It also has an option that allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and then return to the place it stopped last, making it easier for you to clean larger homes. This model is also a good option for pet owners since it can spot and avoid tangled hair and fallen food particles.
In our tests, we found that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined a LIDAR (light) sensor that can identify rooms and obstacles with a structured-light sensor to detect objects and detect edges. This combination lets it stay clear of stairs, drops of liquid and furniture legs easily and save up to four floor maps to be used in the future for references. It can pause and resume cleaning at any point, so that you can continue with your chores while it is working. The app includes the 3D image of your home, with room labels and advanced cleaning options.
The robot isn't as efficient in cleaning as our top models, however it excels at picking up heavier items like orzo pasta, metal screws and fine debris such as sand. The only drawbacks are that it isn't able to mop and that its navigation system is a little less impressive.
The best option for Carpet
If you have carpeting in your home, search for a vacuum that has good pickup and a high score for maneuverability on carpets and rug. Many models are capable of cleaning dust from low-pile carpets, and some do a decently job of cleaning up larger debris such as orzo pasta and metal screws. However, they aren't able to pick up fine particles like canister or upright vacuums and may also not pick up dirt that is ground-in close to baseboards and thresholds.
The best choice for most carpeted homes is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop. It allows you to swap between a cleaning bin and mopping pad that is damp. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop that can clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads that spin at 200 revolutions per minute. It detects and raises the pads when it is in contact with carpet to prevent wetting the floor, and you don't have to take them off or replace them after every use. The Q Revo is also better than other robot vacuums and mops in keeping away from obstacles, getting close to rugs and thresholds and staying clear of obstacles.
The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another good option. It was a great performer in our tests, and you can schedule it to clean your home while you are away. It can also be set to only mop and we loved its remarkable navigation on rug and floor surfaces and its ability to climb up and over furniture. The Combo i5 has a long time to run and excellent path planning for the size of the device.
If you're looking for a modern model, you can look at the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a large dock that can last for weeks without needing to be emptied. It also has amazing capability to auto-empty carpets and floors that are not cleaned. It's also got a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to operate at certain times of the day (a useful feature to keep mischievous kids and dextrous pets from causing havoc). The Shark isn't as powerful as other robot vacuum/mop combinations, but it does pick hair and pet hair extremely well. It's also the best value of our top choices.
The best choice for hardwood floors
Robot vacuums are a great pick for hardwood floors because they are able to easily navigate around obstacles without damaging the floor's surface. They are capable of removing crumbs and dust, but they struggle with pet hair and other larger particles. They don't have the suction of the top canister or upright vacuum, making them unsuitable for deep cleaning upholstery or carpeted areas.
The best two-in-1 robots combine a vacuum and a mop, taking care of a more complete chore in one sweep. Choose a model that has an onboard sensor that detects changes in the floor texture and adjust suction to match. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+, for instance, has this feature and can transition effortlessly from hard to soft carpeting.
If you have a lot of hardwood floors in your home, you might want to consider a robot mop and vacuum like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model uses a powerful robot vacuum with intelligent navigation to clean hardwood and other hard surfaces, and it can mop too. Its sensors assist it in avoiding the stairs and other hazards, so you don't have to worry about the robot falling down the stairs and damaging your hardwood.
The Eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, not simply swab them to remove dirt and dust. The mop pads that are reusable reduce waste, spread germs less, and can be cleaned in the docking station to save your time. The mop pads can also be dried, washed, and used again.
robot vacuum cleaner for sale and mop can be controlled from your smartphone, making it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can use the app to create an area where the vacuum can't go or mark rooms as separate or schedule cleaning times for certain areas. The eufy S1 Pro has an auto-emptying port that collects debris through trapdoors, and then stores it in a bagless or disposable bin. This means that you won't need to empty the bin manually as often as other models.
Best suited for small Spaces
Like the name suggests that these robots are suited for small areas. They have smaller bins that can hold less waste, and they're more efficient than the larger models when it comes to maneuvering tight corners. They can also fit under furniture, where larger robots struggle to get in. They are usually less expensive than the higher-end models too, although you'll need to manually empty their dirt bins at end of each cleaning session.
A few years ago robotic vacuums experienced significant changes. Manufacturers started adding sensors that allowed them to navigate and avoid household items that traditional sensors might be stuck on or across. The improvements in technology reduced the number of times our testers had to clean up after a robot accident.
robot vacuum cleaner on sale eliminated all issues that these devices have, however. The most affordable models struggle with the same issues that the older ones did and most need a certain amount of light to see where they're going. If you reside in a dark area or have lots of furniture with low-profiles, consider purchasing top-mounted spinning laser units to map your space, like our best overall and runner-up picks do. This allows them to work in the dark and avoid obstacles such as stairs.
The models can also be programmed to only use their cliff sensors only when they are on or near the ground, but not when they are above it. It's essential to cover mirrors to prevent this from happening. The lasers used by LIDAR-based models may bounce off reflective surfaces, which makes the robot think it's in a different space.
Some of the models we recommend also allow you to create virtual no-go zones in areas where you do not want the robot to go, which is beneficial if you have small children or pets. Those features aren't available on all of the models we test and recommend that you review our full reviews of the choices below prior to making a purchase.
