Social relationships are important for older adults' well-being, including those who live in assisted living (AL) communities. This study explores co-resident networks within an AL community and identifies factors associated with residents' social ties.

Acquaintance and companionship networks within the community are described using cross-sectional survey data (N=38). We use inferential network statistical methods to estimate parameters for factors associated with residents' acquaintance and companionship ties.

Residents reported an average of 10 acquaintances and almost four companionships with other residents in the sample. The likelihood a resident had an acquaintance was associated with higher levels of cognitive functioning (p<.05), higher levels of physical limitations (p<.01), living in the AL community for a longer time (p<.01), and less frequent contact with outside family and friends (p<.05). Acquaintances were more likely between residents who moved in around the same time as eachal ties, and distinguishing between acquaintances and companions.

During 2016, 82 of 205 (40%) DECIDE participants had at least one episode of delirium. At 1 year, 135 of 205 hospitalised participants completed an interview along with 100 controls. No controls experienced delirium (i-AGeD>4). Delirium was associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline compared to those without delirium (β = -2.2, P < 0.001), but number of hospital admissions was not (P = 0.447).

These results suggest that delirium during hospitalisation rather than hospitalisation per se is a risk factor for future cognitive decline, emphasising the need for dementia prevention studies that focus on delirium intervention.

Clinical information and blood samples were available for 9,332 residents (mean age 86.7 ± 8.1years, 76.4% women) and 10,614 staff (mean age 45.6 ± 11.5, 86.2% women). Up to 84.4% of residents had frailty, 84.9% co-morbidity and 69.3% cognitive impairment; 65.2% of workers were health-aides.COVID-19 seroprevalence was 55.4% (95% confidence interval (CI), 54.4-56.4) for older adults and 31.5% (30.6-32.4) for staff. In multivariable analysis, frailty of residents was related with seropositivity (odds ratio (OR) 1.19, P= 0.02). In the case of staff, age > 50years (2.10, P< 0.001), obesity (1.19, P= 0.01), being a health-aide (1.94, P< 0.001), working in a center with high seroprevalence in residents (3.49, P< 0.001) and contact with external cases of COVID-19 (1.52, P< 0.001) were factors associated with seropositivity. Past symptoms of COVID-19 were good predictors of seropositivity for residents (5.41, P< 0.001) and staff (2.52, P< 0.001).

Recurrent somatic clonal mutations of the BCOR gene and its homologue BCORL1 have been detected in several hematological malignancies and aplastic anemia. They are scattered across the whole gene length and mostly represent frameshifts (deletions, insertions), nonsense and missence mutations. These disruptive events lead to the loss of full-length BCOR protein and to the lack or low expression of a truncated form of the protein, both consistent with the tumor suppressor role of BCOR. BCOR and BCORL1 mutations are similar to those causing two rare X-linked diseases the oculo-facio-cardio-dental (OFCD) and the Shukla-Vernon syndromes, respectively. Here, we focus on the structure and function of normal BCOR and BCORL1 in normal hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues and review the frequency and clinical significance of the mutations of these genes in malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases. Moreover, we discuss the importance of mouse models to better understand the role of Bcor loss, alone and combined with alterations of other genes (e.g. Dnmt3a and Tet2), in promoting hematological malignancies and in providing a useful platform for the development of new targeted therapies.
