Evolution Korea
In the past the Korean scientific community resisted working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer a viable option.
The STR has been battling to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over many generations, these changes can lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals who have advantages can reproduce faster and longer than those with less favorable traits. This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. In time the genetic variability could result in the development of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they don't pass on to future generations.
Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies, creationists have seized on the idea that evolution is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks and have also gotten rid of any mention of the evolutionary origins of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestral bird's ancestor.
Why is Evolution important to humanity?
Evolution explains how the Earth and all living creatures came into existence. It is one of the fundamentals of biology, and aids scientists to understand how living things function and grow. Evolution also reveals the relationships between species. Scientists study evolution to gain a better understanding of the natural world and to make useful discoveries including the development of new medicines.
The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe and life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, including religious leaders, support the scientific theory of evolution. It is crucial to keep in mind that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only addresses physical objects, events, and processes.
Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution, and that humans share an ancestry that is shared with other animals.
It is crucial that scientists and educators speak out for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some countries around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are troubling developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, including fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. This belief is based on a variety of reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions that can lead to the development of new medications, while others are motivated by a desire to improve animal and plant species, usually for the benefit of humans. 에볼루션코리아 are simply curious, and still others have a deep faith in God and are seeking to understand how the universe works.
What is Creationism?
Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists are typically divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the manner described in the Bible. YECs hold that the biblical account of the six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs may be less well-known However, their beliefs are as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and Earth are billions-of-years old and that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they might lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this theory, God creates the original species and then allows them to change over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are similar to the original ones.
Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterwards. 에볼루션 deny the notion of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. STR has won its first victory by eliminating instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. The next step is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints an image of students as being negative. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved a number of things through its seminars and lectures. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences that has an evolutionary perspective that sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught to this day.
On August 6-7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
