What is Free Evolution?

Darwinism ultimately won, leading to what biologists refer to as the Modern Synthesis. The theory denies that acquired characteristics are passed down from generation to generation and instead argues organisms evolve by the selective action of environment factors, including Natural Selection.

Lamarck and his contemporaries believed in the idea that acquired characters could be passed on to future generations. However, this notion was never a central part of any of their theories on evolution. This is largely due to the fact that it was never tested scientifically.

However, it has been more than 200 years since Lamarck was born and in the age of genomics there is a huge body of evidence supporting the heritability of acquired traits. This is often referred to as "neo-Lamarckism" or more frequently epigenetic inheritance. It is a variant of evolution that is just as valid as the more well-known neo-Darwinian model.

Evolution by Adaptation

One of the most common misconceptions about evolution is being driven by a struggle for survival. This view is inaccurate and ignores other forces driving evolution. The struggle for survival is more effectively described as a struggle to survive in a specific environment, which may involve not only other organisms, but also the physical environment itself.

To understand how evolution works, it is helpful to think about what adaptation is. It refers to a specific feature that allows an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment. Physiological adaptations like thick fur or gills are physical characteristics, whereas behavioral adaptations, like the tendency to search for friends or to move to shade in hot weather, aren't. It is important to keep in mind that the absence of planning doesn't make an adaptation. Failure to consider the implications of a choice even if it appears to be rational, could make it unadaptive.
