A Glimpse Into The Secrets Of Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best
How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

Robot vacuums will save you time and effort when it comes to cleaning. Top performers are good at cleaning up dust, light debris and cords.

automated vacuum cleaner -end models even sweep your floors--though they still can't climb the stairs. Choose models that have smart mapping, real-time hazard avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

Best Overall

The top robots we tested were user-friendly, efficient and able to keep up with the daily debris. You'll need a robot that has decent carpet-picking power and the ability to take on stairs. If company website looking for a robot with additional features, think about a model that has smart mapping technology or an app that allows you to control it remotely.

Camryn Rabideau is a contributing shopping writer and product reviewer at PEOPLE who has tested dozens of robotic vacuums. She prefers the ones with the most conveniences such as ones that have self-emptying bins and charging stations that automatically empty and refill water tanks to mop robotic vacuums. She also likes robots that recognize landmarks like furniture legs and power cords so they don't get caught when climbing stairs.

This Black and Decker robot has a lower score for navigation and has less technology for avoiding objects than the top-rated models. However, it does have an ample dust bin that doesn't need frequent emptying, and has a long battery life. It also comes with a feature which allows you to schedule cleaning sessions and then return to where it stopped last, making it easier for you to take care of larger homes. This model is also a great choice for pet owners because it is able to identify and eliminate hair tangled and fallen food particles.

In our tests, we observed that the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combined a LIDAR (light) sensor which can map rooms and detect obstacles with a structured-light sensor to detect objects and detect edges. This combination lets it avoid steps, drops of liquid and furniture legs easily and save up to four floor maps for future use. It is able to stop and restart the cleaning process at any time, so that you can continue doing chores while it works. The app offers the 3D image of your home, complete with room labels as well as advanced cleaning options.

This robot is not as good at cleaning like our top models, but it is a pro in picking up larger items like orzo pasta, metal screws and fine debris such as sand. The only drawbacks are that it isn't able to mop and that its navigation system is less impressive.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, look for a vacuum that has good pickup and a high score for maneuverability on carpet and rug. A lot of models are adept at cleaning dust from low-pile rugs. Some are capable of picking up heavier debris, such as orzo pasta and metal screws. They can't take in fine particles like an upright or canister, and could miss dirt that is close to baseboards or thresholds.

The best choice for most carpeted homes is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop, which lets you swap in an empty bin for cleaning and a damp mopping pad. The Roborock Q Revo, for example, vacuums and wet mop with circular pads that rotate at a speed of 200 rotations per minute. It recognizes and raises its pads when it comes in contact with carpets, preventing the flooring from becoming wet. You don't need to take them off or replace them each time. The Q Revo is also superior to other robot vacuum/mops at keeping away from obstacles and rugs, while also getting close to them and thresholds and staying clear of obstacles.

Another option that is worth considering is the iRobot Roomba Combo i5, which was a great performer in our tests and can be scheduled through the app to clean your home when you're away from home. It can be set to only mop. We were impressed by its ability to navigate on floors that are not bare and carpets. The Combo i5 has a long runtime and excellent path-planning for an item of this size.

If you're looking for a more high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a large charging dock that can go months without needing to be emptied and boasts impressive navigation skills and automatic emptying on carpets and floors. It also has a smart mapping system that can be set to only run for certain times (a useful feature to stop the sly children and animals from running wild). The Shark isn't as powerful than some other robot vacuums and mops, but its still very effective in removing hair and pet hair and is the best value among our top picks.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the ideal option for hardwood floors since they are able to easily maneuver around obstacles and not damage surfaces that are not bare. They are capable of removing dust and crumbs, but they struggle with pet hair and other large debris. They lack the suction of an upright or a top-quality canister vacuum, which makes them a poor choice for deep cleaning upholstery or carpeted areas.

The best robots are two-in-one, which combine mop and vacuum to complete the job in one step. Find a model that has an onboard sensor to detect changes in the floor's texture and adjust suction in line with the changes. This feature is available on the ECOVACS Deebot T9+ and lets it move seamlessly from hard carpeting to soft carpeting.

If you have a lot of hardwood floors in your home, you may want to consider a robot mop and vacuum combination like the Eufy S1 Pro. This model is a powerful robotic vacuum that has intelligent navigation to clean hardwood floors and other hard surfaces. Additionally, it can mop as well. The sensors in it allow it to avoid hazards such as stairs.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to wash hardwood floors using downward pressure, rather than simply swab them in order to remove dirt and dust. The pads that are reusable reduce waste and spread fewer germs. They can also be cleaned at the docking stations to save time. They can also be washed, dried and reused.

The robovac can be operated by your smartphone, making it easier to use. You can, for instance, use the app to designate areas where the vacuum cannot enter, or to label rooms or schedule specific cleaning sessions. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that sucks debris through a trapdoor, and stores it in a bagless or disposable bin, meaning you don't need to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

Ideal for small Spaces

Like the name suggests, these robots are best designed for smaller areas. They have smaller bins which can hold less garbage. They are also more efficient in getting around corners better over larger models. They can also fit under furniture, where larger robots are unable to reach. They are also less expensive than higher-end models, but you will have to empty their dirt bins manually at the end each cleaning session.

A few years ago, robot vacuums went through a major change as manufacturers began adding sensors to help them navigate around and avoid household objects that their traditional sensors would get stuck on or run over. These improvements reduced the number times our testers were required to clean up after a robot accident.

The new sensors don't solve all the issues that these devices have, however. The cheaper models are still not able to tackle the same obstacles as the older models, and they require an adequate amount of light to be able to see where they are moving. You should consider a model that uses a spinning LIDAR device mounted on top to trace the space. Our top models and runners-up models use this. This lets them work in darkness and avoid obstacles such as stairs.

These models can also be programmed to only utilize their cliff sensors when they are on or near the ground, but not when they are above it. You'll still need to cover any mirrors that could hinder this function, however, since the laser used by a laser-based model can bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to think it's in a different room.

A few of the models we recommend also allow you to set up virtual no-go zones in areas where you don't want the robot to go, which is useful if you have small pets or children. These features aren't on all models we test. Check out our complete reviews before deciding.
